Gardena Retirement Center was welcoming. They showed me both the two-bedroom and one-bedroom, which my mom was interested in, and the director was really helpful on the financial aspect as well as my mom's comfort level. It's just that her mental health failed a little bit, so we didn't go with them, but I liked their willingness to work with her. The place was pretty well maintained too. They're renovating the top floor. It was like a lounge area for the residents and I think they were working on it to make it more beautiful. They were doing bingo during my visit, but they also have outings, a garden to go to, an exercise of some sort, and a sing-along group or something like that.

Gardena Retirement Center is known for their Japanese Resident population, which worked out perfectly for my grandmother as Japanese is her native tongue and having peers that speak the same language as her has made living in this center very much enjoyable for her. The meals are also catered to a Japanese style meal plan so she is very comfortable with the food, versus having to become accustomed to an americanized diet. The staff is very friendly and is very attentive to the needs of my grandmother. Everytime I visit, they have a strict sign in policy which is reassuring that safety and security of the residents is very important to them. They have daily activities for the resident and offer many different medical services as monthly doctors visits in the home and driving the residents to dentist appointments. The living arrangment for my grandmother is a studio with privite restroom attached. This allows her plenty of privacy and a sense of personal space. One of the benifits of living in this home is that it is located close to my home about 10miles away, so she is always within driving distance from me in case of an emergency. The local hospital is also right around the corner for peace of mind as well.

The building is not in a nice area, but the staff is very friendly. The entrance area was nice. The decor is outdated, as is some of the equipment. However, the rooms were clean and large. The staff was in constant contact with the patients and they liked to have conversations, rather than doing the bare minimum and leaving the room. There were lots of activities for the residents, like puzzles, bingo and crafts in a communal room. The food was nutritious and appeared to be of high quality. The staff coordinates outings to nearby stores and they monitor the residents so they are not spending more money than they can afford on items they do not need. There is a large room for physical therapy and the two therapists I observed were very upbeat and seemed to enjoy working with their patients. They remembered what the residents had talked about on previous appointments (grandchildren, etc) and followed up with them. Although this location is not very upscale, I was impressed with the quality of care provided.
