My wife and I lived in Carlsbad By the Sea. It was pretty good up until the time we left. We're independent living. The in-house doctor there with the nurse decided that my wife had dementia, and that she had to move out. Of course, I wouldn't let her move out without me so that's why we left. Basically, they threw us out. You really have to be careful. If you or the wife is even close to having dementia or needing special memory care, they're going to toss you out. When we first moved in, the food was great. Everything was great, but it slowly deteriorated. It's not just my opinion, but the other people that have been there a long time have seen the food and the service deteriorate. They also had a huge turnover. A lot of their people have left to go get better jobs. Right now, the people that run it are after the buck and do not pay much attention to service; it's gone downhill. We lived in two different apartments while there, and both of them were nice and well done. When you move in, you have to pay a move-in fee of several hundred thousand dollars. They redo the place for you. You get to choose your carpet and this and that, so it would look like a new home. At least, that's the way it was. There were a lot of activities. We went through several activity directors. The activities depended upon who the director is, how well the residents enjoy it or not, and the number and types of activities. There's no consistency. It just depends upon who's hired to do the activities. They have had head chefs, but the same thing happened. They would come in and last a while. The department heads would also come and go. If somebody asked me if I recommend that they move in there now, my answer would be a no. I recommend that you would have to do a lot of investigation first before you move in.

I toured Carlsbad by the sea and it was my favorite. The food is excellent, its just a lovely place, and its right by the ocean. I even signed up for it, but I backed out, because it was very expensive. It had everything. They have an outdoor and indoor pool, a staff member makes an exercise plan for each resident, they have balanced classes and strength classes, and they had a minister who comes every week for a talk. They have a salad bar, you can always have a filet mignon, and a salmon, and they always have three entrees; theyre very flexible.

Carlsbad by the Sea was not that high end. We did had a good meal there. We met the marketing staff, who were fine. The units were very nice. It's a much smaller facility, so they offered fewer services. There's a type A and a type B facility. One of them includes all of the services including nursing and assisted living, and in the other one, you have to pay extra for any extra services. It's right on the ocean, so that's very nice. The vast majority of the units don't look at the ocean, and there's traffic noise associated with that. If you want to live in the middle of the village in a three-story building, you have noise from the surrounding area. The food was very good, and the facility was fine.

Carlsbad By The Sea was beautiful. It was by the sea, which is nice and cool, so I could go outside. The grounds were beautiful, but the entrance fee was too expensive. The staff was fine. They didn't have studio apartments. They have 1-bedrooms with a living rooms and kitchens. They're like full-fledged apartments.

Carlsbad by the Sea was nice. We walked across the street to a clubhouse that was right on the ocean. You could look down at the beach and it was beautiful. They even have functions there. We saw a couple of rooms which were very nice. We had lunch with one of the sales director and that was very good. However, it didn't quite appeal to our particular needs and desires.

I was down at Carlsbad By The Sea. It was very nice, but the cost was quite high and beyond my friend's means. It was not as friendly and as personable as we found at the other community. Well, Carlsbad By The Sea was very well done. It was very nice and very accommodating. What interests my friend was the fact that they would take you out for a ride, they would take you to the store, and they would take you to your personal doctor. The dining area was excellent. It was very good.

Carlsbad by the Sea is a beautiful facility. We had lunch; the lunch was gourmet, and it was very nice but it’s very expensive. I thought the apartments were a bit small for our liking, but it was actually over our budget. They do not have a skilled nursing there, and they do not have memory care either. We dealt with one man, his name was Kevin and he was OK. We met a few of the residents, and it was OK. It was very clean and fine. It was a very homey feeling, the lounge area is beautiful, and they were having a birthday party celebration for somebody’s birthday when we were there, and there was a piano player. The resident’s level education wise was a little higher standards, and I thought the people were a bit younger too, and it was a very active community. We had lunch together, they served you at the table, and there are several choices that was very nice much nicer than the other facility we went to.

At Carlsbad by the Sea, they had all sorts of activities. They had classes, arts classes, and discussions. They had transportation to take people around if they need to go shopping, or go to the doctor and they're not driving. The room were very nice. We're looking at a beachfront property and it was expensive.

Carlsbad By The Sea was the one I liked the best because it was downtown and right next to the ocean. I talked to the people there and they were happy. The rooms were great. They had a bedroom, a full kitchen and a laundry. It was a great place. However, it was a bit expensive.

Carlsbad by the Sea was a very beautiful looking facility. It was clean and well maintained. It was like living in a beautiful luxurious apartment building. It was situated in a very nice community. They had a full program for activities. They had a pool and a hobby room. The people that we spoke with were very knowledgeable and helpful. However, they don't have a memory care unit and they had nothing for people who had dementia. But I would recommend it to people especially to those who wanted to live in a cooler ocean atmosphere.

The place is beautiful, the ocean is literally right there. As soon as you walk in you notice how clean it is and how beautiful. Theres people of all ages i believe its 55 and up. And they looked happy unlike other places we looked. It didnt look like they were being caged inside the whole time. We viewed the rooms which were beautiful lots of space and a big bathroom. We also toured the kitchen seemed like it had pretty good food for a retirement home. All the staff was super nice which was great made us feel very welcome. However there was one small down fall. Because it was sooo nice it was on the expensive side so we chose not to go there. Basically you get what you pay for.

My 90 year old grandmother has lived at Carlsbad by the Sea since the facility opened nearly two decades ago. She enjoys living there for a wide variety of reasons. Her apartment is nice, and offers her a personal space surrounded by her own familiar belongings, even in an assisted living situation. The location near the beach is beautiful, and she is walking distance from restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. She often uses the shuttle service for further trips. The staff, from the nurses, to the receptionists, to the dining room servers, are all very kind. They know my grandmother's name, and remember her preferences from day to day. They welcome visiting family members, and put together impressive buffets for holidays. The food is healthy and delicious. Residents have the option of dining in their apartments, or in the well-appointed dining room with a full service staff. A wide variety of enrichment activities are offered, and my grandmother enjoys telling us about the many activities that she participates in with her friends and neighbors. We have not had any major issues with the facility in the entirety of the time that she has resided there.
