I toured Huntington at the Newport. I like the size of the rooms and their floorplan. The tour person was great. They had lots of dining options and activities. They were just very nice. The staff was amazing. She was very good. They have a beauty salon, a garden, and a library. It's great. It was very nice and clean. When we went during Christmas it was decorated nicely.

My mom has been in Huntington at The Newport for a couple of weeks now. There are lots of good things about it, and then there are things that aren't so good. My mom needs more help than they seem to be giving, but some really nice ladies work there, and I like that. Sometimes it's hard to get somebody in if my mom has to go to the bathroom. She pushes her pendant and sometimes it takes a while to get people in there. Her apartment is nice though. It's a pretty good place. It's as good as you're going to find. It's still not like living in the independent place that my mom was in. It's pretty good. The food is not the greatest, but I found that in a lot of these places, it's hard to cook for so many people. In general, it's good. Most of the staff are really nice and caring. The dining area is okay. The building is fine. With regards to activities, they have bingo, they give them manicures, and sometimes they have people come in and sing. There are some painting sessions, too. However, for New Year's, they didn't do anything. They didn't have a decoration or anything. You would have thought they would have had either a special meal or a special dessert or something, but it was like it wasn't even a holiday, so that was kind of disappointing.

We visited a friend and she wanted some ice for drink. The aide was too busy to get it for us , so my husband went down to kitchen to get some . As soon as he turned on the lights about 20 roaches scattered all over the floor. He got the ice , came right back up and said we’re leaving. The place is just 5 yrs old , but because of that , we would not recommend this place to anybody. Also, a lady in a wheelchair was coming down hallway and she was crying. We asked her what was the matter . She said she couldn’t go to ice cream social because she didn’t have a dollar for the ice cream ! We asked around and everybody said patients have to pay for all their activities. The only free one is bingo . How awful for the patients— they pay SO much to live there but don’t get treated very nicely. They get an F for the kindness category. We gave her the dollar for ice cream and an extra one for next time . She said to us you are so kind — we need you to work here!

I lived at The Huntington for 5 months. They do not have a kitchen. Food is prepared at the adjacent nursing home and although it's brought over on steam tables it is still is often cold and unpalitable. entrées are selected and turned in weekly so they can change what they serve and unless you have been able to copy the menu you have no idea of what yhey may have switched.Even with a new chef the food is awful. the temperature in the dining room was kept at 68degrees. we were so cold last winter that several residents wore coats in the dining room. They refused to turn up the heat Nursing staff seems overworked and understaffed creating an opportunity for error due to fatigue. on one occasion a resident fell out of bed and was not discovered for 6 hours. There have been situations where medications were given and left on a cabinet to be discovered by the family days later. This is a beautiful facility. It's a pity that it's not worth living there.

The Huntington had very little daily activities to offer the residents or other areas within the building for the residents to get out of their rooms . Very confide feeling for the residents . Nursing staff was inadequate and at times did not know or made mistakes in providing medical needs the resident required . I am so glad we moved our love one out of the Huntington . High turn over of staff And unprofessional attitudes made it unpleasant for family and visitors .

I have a family member at Huntington and she likes it very much. I used to work in healthcare myself and their staffing is just like any other facility. You will always have some staff that are more caring then others. This is no different that the hospital, doctor office, or any other place. I find that the staff try to answer any question I have. Very nice facility and nice people. I have eaten several times with family and food was good.

The Huntington Assisted Living in Newport News is not what they play out to be...the food is very poor..menu is always changing even if you have already selected your weekly entrees...kitchen service is slow.. always nickel and diming ... CNA help inadequate.. Administrators and head nurse make promises , promises but things never change..high turn over of staff, CNA's CNA's if they are there normally have poor attitudes about the management and staff. Level of care, concern an attitudes of the staff and management is inadequate...

The Huntington is a new facility and it is very nice. In fact, it is much nicer than the other facilities around. They have large rooms and a variety of floor plans. Their common areas all look very nice. The dining area looks like a nice restaurant, they have a lot of space there and you can see that it is well set up for wheel chairs and walkers. They do have activities and the person that I talk to is very nice, very helpful and knowledgeable. If there's something that she didn't know, she will get back to you very quickly with the answer. I will definitely recommend them to others.
