Kendall House (Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs) is wonderful and it's been great. They bring in entertainment, people coming in to sing, they play Bingo, and chess. He eats three times a day there. I like the care and the cleanliness. They're pretty pricey though.

My mother went to Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs - Kendall House Wellness and Rehabilitation from the hospital. She did really well the first three weeks she was there. She was doing the therapies and everything, but then there was a lot of management change. There was a lot of people that left. On the weekends and some evenings, they would be bringing in temp agencies, so there was no continuity of care. They had the therapists stacked with so many clients. They had the occupational therapist seeing 12 people. You can't see 12 people and give all of them the care and the time that they need. My mother can be difficult, but they had no patience whatsoever. She ended up being extremely dehydrated, not eating, and having pain in her stomach. They did x-rays and some blood work. They found an ileus, and so they put her on IV fluids. She was still having pain after that ileus had resolved. Then she wasn't eating because she kept saying, "I have a very bad taste. Food tastes bad." She never did meet the doctor or even talk to him. The nurse practitioner that goes there three days a week kept saying, "Well, it's because she's not eating" or "It's because she's taking the pills and not eating." They kept telling me it was my mom's fault because she was not eating. I said she's not eating for a reason. She got so dehydrated and malnourished. I sent her to the ER. They were mad because I sent her to the ER, and they told me that she didn't need it. She got to the ER, and it ended up she had partially collapsed lungs. She was extremely dehydrated and her heart rate was bouncing all over the place. They ended up finding that the reason for the pain was an infection in her colon. If I hadn't taken her, she probably would have died. I would be there with her like five hours and nobody would even come. They weren't like that when she first got there. The physical appearance was very nice. The permanent staff was very good. The temporary staff was a 1. For what we got out of it, the value for the money is a 2. She still can't walk. Although they had some wonderful nurses and CNAs, when you mix those with the others that didn't care at all, it was pretty bad. I ended up hiring someone to go there and be with her every day.

Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs - Kendall House was great and expensive, but it's probably one of the best ones in all of Boerne. The staff, activities people, people who prepared the meals and even the cleaning crew were all great and nice. The community was great but small with only 40 occupants, so it seemed like they had enough CNAs, which is pretty good for a nursing home. My mom's room was fine. The food was pretty good, and she liked it a lot. The weekend nurse would always go out of her way and spend her own money to put up Christmas or Halloween decorations and brings books from Goodwill, so it was cool that people would do that on their own. They had bingo, parachute toss, went on a trip to a restaurant once, and had Elvis impersonators which was a lot of fun.

She has been in Kendall House for a couple of months now. I was impressed that it was better than I expected. It is very nice and clean. The people seem to be good to the people who are in there. I haven't heard of any complaints. They keep trying to make her stand, but it hurts and she doesn't want to. She is 92 and just had a stroke, and she is not doing really well. I don't think it is anybody's fault; it's just the way it is. It doesn't smell bad, and it seems to be running fairly smoothly. It is kept nice and clean.

Near-new facility with excellent nurse-to-patient ratio. Bright cheerful rooms, all with private bath. Caring staff.
