My dad was a resident of Heartland of West Ashley Rehab and Nursing Center, and they did a fairly good job. He was there for rehab for a while. Their staff is okay. It's an older community, but it's kept up okay. He's in a private room there although they also have shared ones.

One star is too good for this facility! It was Viviant when mom was there.PT was great, but care was horrible. She was post Covid and couldn’t walk. Several times when she rang for help to use the restroom an aid came in and told her to go in her pants because they didn’t have enough help. Hours would pass before she would get cleaned. I complained to the manager but it continued to happen. Couldn’t take her out because it would be AMA. Was so glad when she was discharged.

My father died just as Heartland was being evacuated for Dorian. Of course there was some confusion, we understand that. However, they could not have been more disrespectful and careless in their handling of the situation both during and after. We received no official call of condolences or base information for how to proceed from the institution where he had been for nearly five years (it is now nearly three weeks later). Not one gesture towards us of information from the leaders of this institution regarding how to handle his items, last bill, or information on his care - all communication was initiated by my family to this day, and of course made a difficult time that much more difficult. Worst was they cleaned out his belongings immediately, without our permission and without even informing us before we got to his room to find it empty (I had sent a message immediately on the day of death to say we were coming to clean it out as soon as they reopened). It was a shock. When we were given his boxed items we found that they had taken our precious family photos off the wall and stuck them together with the scotch tape used to attach them to the wall, ruining them. They also wrote his date of death directly onto one of his items in indelible ink. (see pics) We were deprived of the rite of final handling of his items. Then they used the hurricane as an excuse, this was upon my calling days after the hurricane had passed to solve yet another problem they hadn't informed us about - all evacuees had returned days prior - they had had plenty of time. I want to point out that we were paying the full exorbitant price of this institution, not that any patient on medicaid should be treated otherwise, but I cringe to think how Heartland behaves towards the latter. I am disgusted by the lack of care and respect shown and I also find it baffling. We are putting our parents into their care and as one friend said, "it is just bad business" to reveal how much this HCR ManorCare institution actually does not care or think. Now that weeks have gone by and we've still had no unforced acknowledgment or apology, I have no choice but to tell the truth via other outlets like this one. Heartland of West Ashley, you made a terrible time even worse than I could have imagined. I suppose you will be asking me to contact your "care line" because you can't discuss a patient here. Well I've called enough times. You call me.

I am removing my family as soon as I find another that is more professional and caring for the patients, The food is slop and I NEVER saw anyone wash hands between patients although there was a MRSA sign on the door. Floor sticky and disgusting.

Heartland has been a very bad experience for my family member. When they were in there they got bad food. They were very impatient with my family member. When my family member would call for the nurse they would not come in a timely manner. Did not give water on a routine basis. Overall my family has lost all confidence in medical Care Facilities.

My elderly mother went to Heartland for rehab after having cardiac surgery, and was in the facility for 3 weeks from January 2016 to early February 2016. It was the first time she had stayed in a rehab facility. I was anxious about how she would be treated as she can be difficult to get along with. Everyone at Heartland, from the receptionist at the front desk, to the people who cleaned her room, brought the meals, physical therapists, nurses, nurse practioners, and the doctor, were unbelievably kind and caring. My mother had had physical therapy before in her home when she had knee surgery, and her interaction with the physical therapist was not successful; however, the physical therapists at Heartland were patient, compassionate, and didn't give up on her, and her physical therapy was a success. The nurses, doctor, and nurse practitioner always took the time to listen to her, explain their plans to help her, and tell her what those plans would accomplish. Probably the best compliment that could be given to everyone at Heartland came from my mother on the day she was discharged: she said that if she had to go to a rehab facility again, she'd return to Heartland.

My mother was in Heartland of West Ashley. They had amenities, and there was a lot of stuff for the patients to do. However, they left her in bed all week, so she didn't get to participate in anything. The dining room was really nice, but she had to eat in bed. They also lost her shoes. There's not much that really impressed me about it. They need more staff.

My mom is in Heartland for a rehab. We opted for this facility because several people recommended it and when we visited this place, we were impressed with it. The nurses are very caring. The physical therapy girls are really wonderful. The caregivers are very kind and very helpful. They're very sweet girls. I like the way they treat the patients there. My mom seems to enjoy their food. She is not a really good eater, but she ate most of the stuff they served and they looked good. My mom is in a private room. It has plenty of spaces for her. She has a bed, a nice big dresser and drawer, a TV and a nightstand. They also have a wheelchair there for her. When my mom first moved into Heartland, she didn't want anybody to leave her. She was 91 and she was scared to stay there. After a few days, she got used to it and she said to me, "You know, it's really not that bad." That was a big compliment coming from her! She said that they are really good to her. Overall, she has had a good experience. In fact, she is doing much better now and she will be going home in a couple of days. I felt that if she had to have that kind of care again, she would be more willing to go back.
