My father-in-law stayed in Elderwood Of Scallop Shell At Wakefield. I thought that place was great. The care was fine. He didn't like the food, but he didn't like anybody's food. The staffers were good, and they had a sense of humor. They updated us as to everything that was going on. It was well kept, it was very clean, and it was organized. They had a good amount of staff. They weren't understaffed. They were very attentive and when you ask them a question, they give you the answer. They listen to my father-in-law, and they take care of them. Parking was great. It was very clean, and it was bright. They had a conference room, and they had outside accommodations so people could sit outside if they wanted to. It was good. They had a check-in staff. Nobody could get by the front desk. They screened everybody, and everybody had to be masked.

We've decided to keep my mom where she is at the time being, which is the Elderwood Of Scallop Shell, not really looking around all that much at this point. The ones that I talked to were basically closed down at this point. You could go online at the website and talk to people on there, but that's kind of difficult. That kind of played into my decision to keep my mom where she is. She ended up there when she initially went in for rehab after her broken hip. I have not been in the building, I just looked at it online like most of the others. I just talk to people and they get back to me. It seems good, but I don't have a lot to judge on. The staff is accommodating and friendly. My mom is forgetting a lot so she needs someone to keep an eye on her. The location is very nice, it's not on a busy street, and it's tucked away. I don't know what the layout is. She went directly from the hospital over there so I have not seen the inside. They're close to relatives down there and that's kind of the determining factor for us and also recommendations from her assisted-living facility. It's not a gigantic nursing home or a rehab center like some of them are so it's a little cozier. They have private rooms which I'm planning to get for my mom. They've got a library. My mother goes down there pretty much every day. Obviously it's a rehab center so I guess they do things with the residents to kind of keep them busy because they can't have visitors. I find them very friendly and easy to work with. They set up a couple of Zoom visits with my mom and it was so nice.

$260.00 has been stolen from the elderly lady (77 years old). I personally checked her pocketbook before the has been checked in and when I came 3 weeks laterto pick her up- the pocketbook was empty, not a single banknote. Contacted administration of the rehab, but did not get any explanation. Also due to the COVID19 virus, all incoming items for the residents have to be quarantined for 24 hours and kept in the hallway. After I came with the additional items for my friend after FIVE days, I found her items still laying on the floor. I asked for the explanations and very rude administrator "Jane" refused to give me any.

I visited daily to Scallop Shell when my grandmother was a rehab patient after knee replacement surgery. All I can say is that the place is beautiful and the staff are top notch. The facility has a 5 star government rating meaning they scored above average with quality measures, staffing, and health inspections (which at last survey was apparently deficiency free). Many may not be aware of this but it was important to my family to do some research prior to deciding on a place for gram's rehab. We wanted to be sure therapy was available to her 7 days a week which Scallop Shell offers. And the best part is, all the staff are Scallop Shell employees. We couldn't have been happier with her care and the progress she made thanks to the folks at Scallop Shell.

I have been dealing with nursing homes for 40 years having dealt with placing relatives in nursing facilities for rehab and long term care and working with clients in my former employment. My 94 year old mother had a knee injury which necessitated a stay in the hospital and rehab at a nursing facility. When my mother left the hospital and entered Scallop Shell on March 6, I did not know what to expect. It was not close to my home so I would not be able to be in and out checking on things as I did with previous homes. I have to say that both my daughter and I left this nursing home feeling comfortable about leaving my mother there. This was a first! Says a lot for Scallop Shelll! Mom entered Scallop Shell on March 6th and spent 10 days there. It was an adjustment and of course it took her a few days to get comfortable. I am going to post a couple of excerpts from my Facebook page while my mother was there which will show you how happy we were with SS. Mom is so happy today. Mom always asks everyone she meets if they play Cribbage. Mom and Dad won many trophies in the RI Cribbage Association when my dad was alive. She found a partner for cribbage! Scallop Shell Nursing and Rehab is amazing. A dietary worker happens to be French and got talking to my mom and the subject of cribbage came up. Today this worker, Michele, came in with a cribbage board and they played a few games. Michele skunked Mom the first game but things got better. Imagine an employee who actually took the time to entertain my mom. I am so impressed! Kudos to Michele! Classic Mom comment for the day: "#1 daughter doesn't always get what she wants" . She is absolutely right but she was referring to my asking them to give her a shower. LOL I could not go there today, absolutely emotionally and physically exhausted, but when I called the nurse, she was cracking up over Mom's sense of humor. They won't find her funny when she finds out that she is not going home tomorrow! Her other comment yesterday was that there was a lot of old people in there! Mom is 94!! Who knows? She is doing well and may be out sooner than we thought. She is very determined to get out! Mom's cribbage friend came back today to play the "rubber" game. Don't know who won because we had a Family Meeting to go to. She should be going home by Tuesday but the people at Scallop Shell like her so much, they told her they weren't letting her go! Poor us! She is going to expect all that attention from us when she is home. All and all a good day except that her roommate is not happy that Mom is having all that attention. Actually, the attention was from Marilyn, the PT department head and Christine, the discharge planner. Both were there to facilitate Mom's plans to go home. Christine spoke French with Mom and sang her some French songs. Too much activity and noise for her roommate which we are very sorry about but if this is keeping Mom happy while she is there, then what can I say? Kudos to Scallop Shell! Going down to see Mom in a little while. She is feeling neglected today because she got herself up and dressed and no one on the staff has come in to see her. She thinks she is getting the 'cold-shoulder'. LOL She doesn't realize that it is the weekend and that there are new staff on that might not know her as well as new admissions who need more attention than she. Also that her schedule is not as rigorous with PT/OT as it is during the week but she will have PT today and OT tomorrow. Hopefully she'll get some company today or there will be a cribbage partner for her before I get to her. I can just imagine what it is going to be like when she gets home in her apartment and she is living her normally quiet existence. Wonder how she'll handle that. My mother went home on March 17th. We were very pleased with the care that she received at Scallop Shell. All the staff were nice to her and I noticed that they treated everyone the same, with much respect. I was very impressed with the Admissions Director/Social Services, Felicia, as she was very cooperative whenever we asked something of her. I have read other comments about Scallop Shell that I would like to comment on. One was the cataloging of clothing--this was done on everything that was brought in and out of the nursing home. We took care of her laundry. I was impressed with the cameras monitoring every exit in the building as well as hallways. I feel that input on stays at a facility is very important to people who are looking for a safe place for their relative. My only regret is that my mother could not stay there since I know that she needs 24 hour care but is not "nursing home" material because she is so sharp for her age. I would not hesitate to ask Scallop Shell to take should she ever need rehab or nursing care in the future. I wish they would open an Assisted Living facility. Lastly, I must comment on the ONLY negative and that is that the room thermostat in my mother's room was turned down to 60 on two occasions and the room was freezing. I would hope that this doesn't happen often as the elderly have poor circulation and thin skin. Mom and her roommate told me that they were freezing and I even I noticed that the room was very cold which was unusual. This occurred that last two days that my mother was there. But other than that, it is a very clean, well run facility with a lovely staff!

My cousin was at this facility during her last days. The buidling is clean, modern and still homey. The staff are kind and welcoming. They were attentive to my cousin's needs and sensitive to ours as the family. Other negative reviews on here don't seem to take into account that this is a nursing facility, and their staffing is in compliance with what the law requires and is realistic in maintaining operations. In a perfect world, we would all have a one to one caregiver, but that is not realistic. My cousin was able to use her call bell to ask for assistance when she needed it, and the staff checked in on her often. She was not physically able to do therapies, but I found that Scallop Shell has an excellent and knowledgable rehab. department as well. They do offer rehab services on Saturdays. Overall, a very positive experience during a sad time for our family. I would recommend Scallop Shell highly.
