Mary's Woods still calls itself a CCRC, but we do not have skilled nursing here. We have residents' care and then it goes up to the assisted living and then independent living. If you go to the hospital and have a, let's say a hip replaced, and you need to go to rehab where the skilled nursing is, they will have to send you to another rehab center in the area. It's inconvenient, but it's okay. Right now, I'm in their independent living. Their staff is fantastic, loving, and caring. I can't say enough good things about the staff. They care about the residents. We haven't had too many activities, although they've done a lot of live streaming to keep us busy. They've put some of the exercise classes on TV, you can do them in your room and that kind of thing. They tried very hard to keep us active and entertained here during the last couple of years. Before that, we had tours and we went to plays, these were all arranged by Mary's Woods. We paid for our tickets but these were all arranged by them. I must say, they do a good job with activities. The food is very good. It's more like a restaurant eating than institutional eating, it's very good although occasionally they have a bad day too. The apartments are lovely, I'm very comfortable in mine. They have 2 exercise rooms because they just added another exercise room to the campus. In the lower part, which is the older part, we have a swimming pool. They did not put one in the newer upper part so it could be extremely crowded. Now, of course, you have to have an appointment to go to it whereas before, you could just go down and exercise at any time in the pool. They do water exercises here which are a little easier on the joints. I don't know when that will change back. I'm hoping it will. Other activities are also pretty good. They have lots of exercise classes that you can go to like Taiichi and just regular exercising like yoga. I think the most popular class is the "Keep on Moving" class, it helps you with your balance and all the things that old people have a problem with.

The food was awful, the caregivers were bullied, the nurses clueless and the clients and their loved ones were ignored. In our past three years there, we had seen three CEO's, three nurse managers and three health services directors be hired and then fired for seemingly endless numbers of reasons. I ask to speak to all of them trying to petition them to do their jobs but without success. I was was always given assurances that things would get better but that all of their promises came to nothing. How is this even possible? And how is it so well hidden from the public? Transparency is not a concept that the various levels of the senior staff value or support. For example, my wife was not moved from assisted living to memory care because she was an escape risk but because "He (meaning me, her husband) was too picky". I was given a "cease and desist" order for simply being critical of the care my wife was receiving as she was dying. Even though we occasionally had a caring and professional caregiver, they were too often fired for being troublesome; meaning they knew their jobs better than their managers. I walked in to my wife's apartment to find her bruised and bleeding from a fall. Where were the caregivers? We fought with the managers constantly, forever hoping that the values of the original nuns that creating Mary's Woods would be honored and maintained. My wife was given the wrong medications. She had a variety of personal items stolen. She was refused vaccinations that were free. She received emergency treatment only after I personally took her out of the facility to receive it at the closest hospital, Meridian Park. But Mary's Woods is a corporation with one overriding purpose: to make money by spending more on feeding the trees than on caring for their memory care clients. If your loved ones are truly loved by you, don't place them in the continuing care facilities of Mary's Woods.

I like that Mary's Woods was very big. There's a lot of land area, and I like it being close to Lake Oswego. It is very nice. It's got lots of places that you can walk to and dine at. You won't feel fenced in particularly. They have cottages, but for my age I will have to move to an apartment. So, I took an apartment in the old part (there's a modern part), and I like the atmosphere there. The apartment was a bit small, but if you want to move from one place to another, you can always put your name down, and you can get the first dibs of what's coming up before the outsiders. So, there's freedom, and before you move in, they will paint the apartment for you in any color you like. The apartments are not fully furnished, but it's got only appliances. If anything goes wrong, they fix it up. It's very good. When you move in, you don't ever have to move out until the chariot swings low for you. The modern part was a bit bigger. It's got everything. They have shuttles to take you to town, and there's actually a metropolitan bus outside that will take you right into Portland. It's not very far out and the Lake Oswego town is just right there. Deborah gave me the tour and she was bright, optimistic, and very chatty. She was just very good with the tour, and we couldn't ask for anything. She knows everything and I can always call her up, because I have to keep her up to date if and when I want to move in. I asked the people going by and I chatted with them about what the food was like, and they said it was very good. In the old part, which I enjoyed very much, everything is also right there. You don't have to go outside in the rain, and in Oregon that's good. They have mahjong, a main gym area, and a swimming pool. They have all sorts of things, and they're quite good.

I toured the community. The overall experience is very positive. The rooms were very nice. They have all the regular amenities, but what was more important to us was their two-bedroom units because a lot of places only have one-bedroom. The food seems to be very good. The range of options seems to be a good choice. They seem to have a wide array of different activities. The community is probably one of the better ones that I've ever seen. It seems to be a newer place, so everything is new and updated.

My sister-in-law is going to Mary's Woods. We chose it because of the surrounding environment, that it's a home rather than a bunch of apartments with amenities, the availability, and offering of health services was better than any we saw. We went to both independent and assisted living, but she will be living in an independent unit at the moment. We met a number of staff and they were very friendly, like they already knew her and were talking very personably. She has tasted the food, and the quality seemed fine. The quality of the maintenance and the use of the original materials was very noticeable. She has a dog, so she needs to be outdoors. The floors on which she could have outdoor access for the dogs have lovely patios, or even little 10x12 outdoor garden type patios. They were really noticeably lovely. The bus line is right at the entrance and it takes us right down to Lake Oswego itself, or to gardens or whatever. The location is in the suburbs, but it's very easily accessible to roads. They have a shuttle three times a week from Mary's Woods itself that takes people to the grocery stores and library and things like that.

My mom has been here 20 years. From independent living to assisted. It has gone downhill in quality over the years. AND Now they did a rapid covid and quarantined her in a room with no phone for 24 hours still no tv 4 days later. They barely look in on her. When you want a warm drink forget it. Its like she is a leper. I don't get a Catholic place not keeping staff and having the quality care they should.

I liked everything about Mary's Woods. It's a very loving community, it's beautifully laid out, and the rooms were varied and nice. They have excellent amenities, and they're top quality. They're on the same campus as Marylhurst University, and anybody who's part of the community can register for class that's offered in the university. I enjoyed the food very much; it's top quality and excellent.

Mary's Woods was just too big of a community for someone who's got Alzheimer's. It's great for people who are independent and don't need help. They just don't have enough assisted living and memory care for the residents that they have. They're constructing an apartment building with shops underneath it. They've got everything there. You buy in like you're buying an apartment, and then you pay rent on top of that. They have a beauty salon, a health center, and community programs. It's like living in a big senior community with a clubhouse.

Mary's Woods was buy-in. It was a very nice facility but we didn't like the concept of buy-in. There were a lot of amenities. What attracted us is that it's right on the Marylhurst campus and if you live in Mary's Woods you're allowed to audit any of the college classes that you went to and that appealed to us a great deal. The dining area is very good. We had lunch there and it was excellent. The staff was really nice, caring, concerned and excellent.

We found them helpful. It's close to where we are living now, and that's one reason we chose Mary’s Woods. The rooms were very nice. They had several dining rooms that had small tables, and they were attractive. They had all kinds of activities. I was impressed most with the friendliness of the people and the cleanliness and attractiveness of the place.

We're planning to move in to Mary's Wood. We had a social group and we had about 25 people who lived there. It's continuing care, from people with independent Villas to large apartments, small apartments, assisted living and then skilled care. You wouldn't have to move anymore. It's really more of change of residency and change of lifestyle -- that's what I liked. You could walk from the property and right on to a trail that goes to the river. The grounds were very good. We knew some of the staff there. I would recommend them to others.

Great marketing, very poor execution, very high cost. Look elsewhere unless you are a millionaire with low standards. Expect a never-ending stream of additional charges beyond what is initially disclosed. Have an attorney negotiate the residency agreement to ensure what is orally represented by marketing is actually in the written agreement. Expect to be treated as a second class resident if you are not a member of a Catholic religious order.
