My dad's a resident of Abernethy Laurels. They just kind of let him be, they let him wander around in his chair and they've taken excellent care of him. He has a private room, but he can go out into the common room which is pretty large. The staff has been great. My dad has received excellent care. He has gotten speech, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. There's a large staff, so there haven't been any staffing issues. They will shave and take care of his hair, but my brother helps a lot too. He loved the food. The facility is gorgeous, it looks like a hotel. They do activities daily, but my dad's not much into them, so they don't make him. He just watches. He's had excellent care, and I can't ask for anything better than that. He's been very content there and we weren't expecting that.

The staff DOES NOT care about their residents in the slightest. This facility is all about money money money and that’s all the care for. They will charge and over change you for everything and they often have problems with over charging etc. The administration couldn’t care less about what happens to the residents and are more full of their own problems. The food is terrible, the menu is repeated over and over there is no variety and it often comes cold and hard. They won’t fix it if you ask. Absolutely not worth the money and they will treat and family you put here as less than human.

Mom went to Abernethy from the hospital after a fall then broke her foot in multiple places. Friends in healthcare could not recommend a nursing facility for rehab in our county. Abernethy was the closest nursing facility with a good reputation. Mom loves the staff there. Several have shared that they have worked there for 20+ years. The therapy team has been great. The nursing staff are caring and have been responsive. CMS has given Abernethy a 5 star rating and we agree. We also have many friends who have placed families at Abernethy and have been pleased with the care and services. It has been different with COVID and it's really good to know we can trust the staff when we are unable to visit due to COVID.

Admissions will not return a phone call or communicate with family. Do not expect information from this entity that will help you make decisions about your family member. I so wish that people who can not empathize with your situation would not end up in jobs where they are expected to help those who need them. I had high hopes and this review is not based on bitterness over not being accepted, it is over noncommunication that would have saved our family weeks had we known what we now know. I have to assume this CCRC does not care if you have the information you need or not. Very disappointed.

My mom went to Abernethy Laurels for rehab for four weeks. It was very nice. Everything about it was great except for the food. My mom did not like the food. The staff members were wonderful. The dining area was nice. They had a full range of activities. They had chapel, too. The room was good. Medicare paid it.

My Grandmother was a recent resident at Abernethy. I found the facility to be very clean and the staff polite and helpful. Sometimes my Grandma could be a pistol and they were all so patient and kind with her. The nurses, housekeepers and therapist that worked with her seemed to care about her and liked their jobs. I would recommend this place to someone needing a nursing home for their loved one. 5 stars*

I was shocked by the treatment my mother received in this facility. Rude CNAs, who complained about my mom so she could hear them. I did not realize until it was too late that they were leaving my mom's leg brace off overnight, resulting in permanent inability to walk. I lived in the area at one time and this place has gone downhill. Don't be fooled by the pretty sunroom; it's an awful place. I'm a nurse and they caused my mom harm. You would literally have to be there 24/7 to watch your loved one yourself.

I am a family member of a resident in the Memory Care. I would not have my family member in any other place in this county other than Abernathy. Most of the CNA's are wonderful caring people. They are grossly overworked and not paid near enough. They are often left alone on a hall with 16 residents to look after and care for. I see this is a safety issue. There are a few nurses , RN/LPN, that are just the best. So many times I have witnessed the nurse just sitting in the office leaving 1 CNA to care for all the residents. I think the medical staff is ok, I am just not impressed with the medical aspect. There seems to be a huge communication issue that Abernathy needs to address. I can only speak of the Memory Care areas, it is a new building and the rooms are wonderful. It is very clean. The staff is friendly and I feel my relative gets fairly good care.

Abernethy Laurels is a warm and welcoming place. They provide great care and have served the community since the 1970's- so they must be doing something right. The building is always clean and inviting. Great staff that are happy and willing to help. 5 stars++

I was shocked at the horror of my dear friend admitted to the memory care unit at Abernathy Laurels. She entered alert and cognitive. The room was old, barren with cement block wall painted cream. not one picture on the wall old soiled curtains over dirty windows. a mattress was propped sideways in the bathroom. She attended physical therapy and did well but was kept in a wheelchair and not up walking as she was at her cottage there. After 2 weeks she had developed a urinary tract infection and change in behavior with fever foul smelling urine. The situation was logged in medical book but not addressed? I pray she does not die from lack of care.

Abernethy Laurels is beautiful and has a nice setting. The people are really nice. My parents-in-law do exercises and bingo. We chose this facility because they offered more than the other facilities we have visited. My father-in-law needed rehabilitation at times, and everything we need is all under one community, so it is very convenient for us.

I visited a friend at Abernethy Laurels. It was very nice, and she loves it. They have several dining areas, and they too are nice. The staff seemed very nice from what I could see. I don’t have anything bad to say about this place.

Abernethy Laurels has it all. They have a team of all five doctors with a PA. They have a swimming pool, exercise, and they take care of the people really good. Here in the homes, the villas and the cottages, they have emergency switches, which if you have a problem you could hit one of the switches and they will move to call you, and if do not answer they will send medical and help to your home. They also have buttons that they wear around their necks and if they had any problems, they can push the buttons for help, and they will come and help them. It is really nice because as they progress in life and need assistance, they can move into more assisted homes right on campus. My parents just moved in there last Saturday. I have talked to many people who have relatives there and everyone that spoke to said they were very satisfied with the facility. They are very attentive to their residents.

Abernethy Laurels is a church affiliated facility with apartments, house and skilled nursing care. It’s an extremely nice place and very clean. They seemed to be a very congenial group of people. They gave us a nice tour on our first visit. We toured the apartments, homes and condos. We also had a complete tour of the main dining room and swimming area. They have nice meetings and information presentation there; we attended their information session. We found them to be very good and we enjoyed the people we met. I’ve been there for other things too. They’re good people and they have a nice church organization. They seemed to have everything you want except we didn’t have the money. I would recommend them highly.

Abernethy Laurels is awesome! The people have always been attentive and caring, the independent living amenities are great, and if assisted living or full care is needed, the facility is top-notch. Would definitely recommend to any family in need.

My mother was once worked at Abernethy Laurels, though she is no longer associated in any way with this facility. I had the opportunity to visit there on a number of occasions and was always very impressed. Located on Highway 16 near the small town of Newton, Abernethy Laurels is convenient to Charlotte, Hickory, and Lincolnton. (It can be easily spotted from the highway by its charming clock tower.) Abernethy Laurels has a wonderful reputation in the community and I think it is well deserved. The grounds are beautiful, as is the facility itself. From the moment you step into the lobby, you feel as if you are in a luxury hotel. The facility is clean, airy, and incredibly spacious. The walls are adorned with artwork and there is even a sunroom area complete with live fruit trees. Though I don't know a great deal about the activities the facility offers, I know there are a wide variety of fun things available for the residents to do. (I have had the opportunity to eat there, however, and the food was delicious.) Most importantly, is the level of care the residents are given. I am a nurse myself and have known several nurses who worked there. I believe the residents receive the highest quality care in an excellent setting, and I recommend Abernethy Laurels wholeheartedly.

Abernethy Laurels is a beautiful campus in western North Carolina. The homes and community are very spacious and beautiful. The property and grounds are maintained immaculately. The staff and caregivers at Abernethy Laurels are very caring and supportive of all residents who live there. They are a continuing care retirement community with all levels of care.
