The ARC of Hope Mills is a special care facility specifically designed for Alzheimer's residents. What is especially unique about the ARC communities is they are stand-alone buildings dedicated to the care of Alzheimer's and related dementia residents. The buildings are secure, giving the residents freedom to roam throughout the building, while still remaining in a safe and secure environment.

The first free-standing Alzheimer's and dementia facilities in the state of North Carolina with its' primary goal and mission being exclusively caring for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

The facilities are designed and renovated to fit the needs of this population. Its staff is specifically trained to deal with this disease. Recently The ARC has exclusively developed the Restorative Alzheimer’s Program, which is unique in its approach to Alzheimer's and dementia care. Alzheimer’s Related Care has hallmarked itself as the leader in providing care for those individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

In order for us to fulfill this obligation to the residents and their families we have implemented the following programs.

The ARC has on-site employees, who are certified by the state of North Carolina, to provide accredited continuing education training to further enhance care for our residents as individual needs are identified. These employees are also an integral part of the Restorative Alzheimer’s Programming. This program is implemented in all three of our Alzheimer’s Related Care facilities.

Recently, Alzheimer’s Related Care has implemented the Internal Quality Assurance Survey program.

The Internal Quality Assurance Survey program consists of a Registered Nurse, with over 30 years as a Licensed Assisted Living Administrator, and other licensed professionals will arrive unannounced at an ARC facility to survey all areas of the facility’s operation. This includes nursing, housekeeping, dietary, activities, administration, medical records, and any other aspect of the day-to-day operation of our facilities. Based upon their findings, they will submit a written report to the owner of Alzheimer’s Related Care Corporation and work with facility staff on any areas they find requires attention. This survey will be conducted on a monthly basis. This will ensure we maintain our highest standard of quality of care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

I visited this facility

When I visited the The A.R.C., The Alzheimer's Related Care Community, I thought the staff member was very nice knowledgeable, and cordial. I would give her a high rating. The facility in my view was awful. The reason I gave them a lower score overall is because of the facilities. They are doing some upgrades or construction or whatever, so a large part of their facilities. I was not able to see. For instance, their courtyard out back, they wouldn't take me there because they said it was under construction. They were redoing the flooring and a lot of the facility. They would redo in the bathrooms, so they had literally all of the plumbing and every fixture taken out of the one bathroom. I don't know whether they were using one bathroom as a co-ed type of bathroom structure. They had one room, which was about 16 by 16, and they have four beds in there for four different clients to live in that one room. They had several rooms like that. Overall, I got the impression that the clients, those in the Alzheimer's unit or people with dementia, they were all, to me, so depressed. It's like they have no life or hope for anything in them at all. They were just all sitting around or whatever. There were three people watching TV, but that was it. I know they, at some point, have structured activities. Maybe it's just the time that I visited or whatever, but it just seemed to be like a waiting area, or holding area for death.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I'm not too much in favor of The A.R.C. They let my husband fall, but the biggest problem was that they didn't call me. He fell at 10:00 p.m. and I didn't find out until 9:30 the next morning, and by that time, he was at Chapel Hill in ICU. Overall, I think they should take better care of their patients. My husband had a nice room. He ate in the dining room with everybody else, and that was fine. I can't say anything bad about the care, except the night he fell. As far as the building and everything, it was fine. For activities, I saw them batting balloons, and they had some arts and crafts going on. My husband didn't stay there very long. The staff seemed to be good with the patients, but I didn't get to know them. It was also a little expensive.

Provider Response

I am so sorry for your experience at an ARC facility. We strive at all times to communicate with family members any changes with their love ones. Many times we do not reach someone and leave messages but we try each and every time to communicate especially times such as yours. I do believe I spoke with you and we both agreed that we were not completely informed by the current provider the real condition of your husband The ARC strives at all times to provide Quality of Care to all residents in an environment both safe and conducive to those stricken with this terrible disease. We employee full time activity directors in each facility with activity calendars planned for each resident based upon their individual care plan. The ARC model of care is to allow all residents to be free of restraints both chemical and physical. It is unfortunate you did not spend a longer time with us to get to know our staff and witness ARC at it finest. If we can do anything for you or your husband in the future, please do not hesitate to call.
