This is my 2nd visit to Westland Nursing and Rehab Centre. I was a patient here last spring after a bout of pneumonia, and this time I have a pressure sore on the back of my thigh. I am a paraplegic, 70 years old, and my skin is becoming more fragile with age. My experience here has been largely positive. The food is good, if sometimes cold. The major problem seems to be understaffing. There are two RN's/LPN's per shift for some 100 patients. This seems to be the minimum allowed under Michigan law. These professionals spend most of their time on their computers, since there is a huge amount of documentation required by Medicare and Medicaid. Nursing aides are expected to look after up to a dozen patients. As a result, a patient can expect to wait 15 to 20 minutes or more for a response to their call lights. This phenomenon is worse on the midnight shift. Most of the aides are kind and patient, but others seem to be there just to collect a paycheck. Aides training levels seem to be poor, with much of it done on the job. The rehab gymnasium, physical therapiests and occupational therapists are EXCELLENT! They worked me hard, and I really appreciate their efforts, It doesn't take long in the hospital to become rundown and out of shape. Finally, a minor quibble. I have been here for nearly a month, and I enjoy watching TV. Unfortunately, my TV experience has been poor. The facility subscribes to DirecTV. I have 11 channels, one of which has a loud 60hz. buzz on the audio, rendering the channel unviewable. My roommate's TV receives 25 channels. When I complained to the maintenance man he said, "Everybody gets 25 channels!" and just walked away. Well, that has been my experience here at Westland Nursing and Rehab Centre. Thank you!

My sister was unfortunately in the Westland Villa for the past 18 months following knee surgery. She passed away day before yesterday. She hated every day she was in this place. The care was substandard, most of the staff rude and/or incompetent, physical therapy almost nonexistent, food terrible. It often took forever for caretakers to respond to a buzzer. One night she was attacked by a crazy resident who was wandering into rooms in the middle of the night. This place was so depressing to visit. My sister was only 65.

We're moving my friend out of Westland, a Villa Center. We're very angry at them. It's not adequately staffed a lot of the time. I got into a couple of arguments with the staff. They're not doing any therapy with my friend at all and that was one of the main reasons we decided to move her. They need better and more staff. They have a physical therapy room, but they don't use it very much. Nobody ever wants to take responsibility for anything. It's always a little game of shifting the blame when something happens. My friend is having trouble swallowing and so they puree all her food. There are a few activities, but they're not well attended. It doesn't do much for her. They just warehouse them there and that's one of the things that I'm mad about. She caught COVID there. Before she got COVID, she was fairly mobile with her walker. They just let her sit in the bed. They haven't done any rehab with her at all. She was even trying to get out of the bed and go and they put her back in the bed. They've got a courtyard. They had a barber shop for men. I don't think they had one for women. She needs some therapy and they've done nothing, then they give you a hard time about it.

There was lack of response from all employees of this facility while my parents were there. From the nursing staff to the administrative staff, lack of communication was huge.

I have a friend residing there for rehab after surgery. When you enter the building, the stench is gut-wrenching. There is one reason for that. The residents are laying in their own urine and feces. When my friend was crying in the middle of the night due to to pain, he was told by the nurse that they were out of pain pills. I happen to know they have a back up box for patients who need pain meds. My friend suffered all night and didn’t get anything for pain until 10 the next morning. I visited and saw ants on the floor near his bed and on his bedside tray! His bathroom was out of toilet paper for two days and he didn’t get any until I went to an aid and got some myself!!!! Each and every time the call button went unanswered. Unbelievable! Horrible care and stinky place!!!!

My friend has a very special person at this facilility. Developed complications from being starved (needed to be hand feed but was not) also from not being moved so they developed bed sores and blood clots that traveled to his lungs. IF YOU WANT YOU LOVED ONE TO DIE PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PLACE THEM HERE......THAT IS ALL THIS PLACE IS GOOD FOR. NOBODY CARES AND NOBODY DOES THEIR JOB. SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN AND WORKING TO DO JUST THAT.. FACILITY IS FOR PROFIT ONLY AND NUMEROUS VIOLATIONS THAT CONTINUE TO TAKE PLACE. PLACE IS A DEATH TRAP WAITING TO KILL YOUR LOVED ONE.

Facility is filthy, smells like urine. Patients are not taken care of. Laying in bed in their own waste. Ask for assistance from staff and wait a long time for anyone to assist. When you address a concern the staff gets annoyed, doesn't want to deal with the issue concerning a patient. Patients are just laying there to die. No concern at all for these patients. Would not recommend anyone putting their love ones in this facility. Had numerous violations at this facility with paying fines up to $17,000.00 .Bugs in food. Horrible place

Would give them minus 10 if I could. Place is no good. Takes 20-30 minutes if not longer for anyone to answer the call button that's only if the patient can reach the call button. When you complain about the care they move you to a different wing. Meds are never on time & seldom correct. My brother was here a couple of months. He had a broken leg with a rod put in it. When asked he was told he couldn't use the bathroom, & there we were told there were no bed pans to use, he had to use a diaper. Everyday I visited his call button was on the floor, he could not reach it. He was suppose to get a puffer for his lungs, never seen one when he was there. You ask about meds nurses & aides disappear. When you hunt them down, they don't know & will have to ask the dr that never seems to arrive.

not one I would recommend. the smell when you first walk in is ridiculous and patients sleeping in wheelchairs in the hallway is unsettling. Medication was not given on schedule and lacked having it on hand when needed to be administered.

While I am sorry that the others on here have had bad experiences, my father had an amazing one and I would recommend Westland Nursing and Rehab to anyone that would ask. They are under new leadership. The staff was sharp and attentive and the rooms were clean. While, the physical plant can be a little dated, they made up for it in their attentiveness. My father was there for a hip replacement.

I was there for 10 days both knee s replaced, they would never answer the buzzer for bathroom I had to drag my knees one at a time with hook on foot to use walker for bathroom, that stunk of another rooms dirty linens on the floor, they took me to shower 1 time and left me in there to fend for my self, I had to put plastic bags on legs and roll around to shower, she came back half hour laterm to say she got busy, smelled, and rehab they took me twice, as they were shot handed, I got my own rehab from going back a forth to bathroom, shapooed my own hair in bathroom sink, and washed every day sometimes getting dizzy, they still didn't come even after I got out of bathroom ,1 nice nurse , got my ice bags for me the rest were very rude or just ignored you, I would not even send my dog to a place like this, they took a women to therapy who could not move and let her sit in wheel chair for the hour, to say the least, they give your medication to others and always have you waiting. Big boo to you and your rehab.

Was a patient in rehab on four occasions. Place was always clean and did not smell. Beautiful garden to sit in, tv lounge with a large beautiful bird cage that residents/patients would so and enjoy. Activities everyday. Loved staff I. All departments. People are only human but if I felt something was not satisfactory they were very nice about it and matter was resolved. If there are particular foods that you like, they are accomodating and food is good. Was there the first time and was upset by some of the policies and when I came back a lot of favorable changes were made. Tried a different place closer to home but transferred to Westland within four days. What a difference. Would go there again and I have reccommended it to others. They have also been happy with the staff, food, and surroundings.
Completely Unacceptable

My mother is a resident there. If you want your loved one looked after appropriately and if you like the staff to keep you informed on how your loved one is doing DO NOT PLACE THEM HERE. The staff is rude, they do not return calls or keep you informed. You spend hours of your own time chasing them down trying to get them to speak with you about basic questions. I left my mother in their care thinking she would be looked after and taken care of sadly she hasn't been the doctors even refuse to see the patients instead they said nurse practitioners the doctor refuses to even speak with family members regarding the care the loved one is receiving or needs to receive. This has to be the worst nursing home I have ever had the experience of dealing with. COMPLETLY regret the choice in placing her here. I would never recommend this place and I would strongly advise others to look at different nursing homes to care for their loved one.

My grandmother was here for the last two weeks of her life, and she was miserable. I got into fights with the nurses every single time I went, I left crying because of the circumstances. Didn't suction her trach enough, she would cry because they wouldn't do it and she couldn't breathe. They didn't change her diaper and she layed in urnine time after time. The nurses are rude and inconsiderate, they don't talk to the patients when taking care of them. The place looks dirty and is loud. My grandmother ended up pulling her trach out of her throat, (most likely out of frusteration), I would most likely die rather than live in this place. Thankyou.

My Mother suffered a severe infection after gross neglect in that facility. The place stinks to high heaven. That is a sure sign that the seniors in diapers are not changed like they should be. The lack of communication between staff, administrator and social workers is appalling. My mother would have died of severe infection had I not walked her out of there and took to an E.R. .

This place has rehabilitation services. They gave us a tour and based on what my mother wanted, it was the total opposite. It didn't have any independent rooms and all they have were semi-private rooms. With my mom not being able to really bring any of her things in there and all of that, it made it unacceptable. My mother is a little more independent for this facility.

Westland was clean but the rooms were drab looking. I didn't really care for it because of the nursing care. They didn't have enough staff and I think that's probably industry-wide. I have no complaints with the food though. I went there because the physician that I had was on staff but if I had other choices, I wouldn't go back there.

This place is not good. My step mother is very unhappy here. We are moving her because she was neglected by the nurses and the aids. She felll and hurt her head and the family was not notified and she did not get a medical evaluation inspite of a gash on her forehead. The nurses aids are negligent and disrespectful. The place is dirty. However the nurses do put on a good show for potential clients/patients. What a shameful way to treat those who cannot care for themselves. Praying our family can find a better place for her.

Mom was at Westland Convalescent for three months. I liked that they were well-staffed. There's a nurse on call, they had doctors to look at her, a therapist to help her with her hands, and social workers who are on call. There is someone there that you can talk to at any time for anything. The rooms were nice, too. However, they need to address whatever it is that's causing the terrible odor. I mentioned the problem to them and I did notice by the third time I was there that they did get on it.

My grandmother was a resident here. She lived here for years. I visited her about twice a week, and my father visited her at least once a day. The facility, overall, was nice. It appeared to be clean and always kept up. It offers outdoor space to visit family with, as well as a few smaller library rooms to visit in. The staff, however, was not always the most friendly or helpful. Although the doctors were very knowledgeable and helpful, the staff usually seemed like they were doing you a favor. They were rude to some of the residents as well. Because my grandmother had a lot of visitors who could ensure she was bathed, and fed on time, I think she received better care than those who didn't have daily visitors. The establishment offers a lot of senior activities also on a daily basis, but it doesn't seem like any of the residents are really made aware of them. The same few people would be involved in the activities. We would tell my grandmother about something going on that day, and she would be interested, but have no idea about it. There were also many cases that the staff would help everyone down to the cafeteria for lunch or dinner, and then they would take hours to help them back to their rooms. This caused the residents to have to sit there and wait for hours to go back. I think that if the establishment monitored and took a little more care in hiring their employees, it would be a good nursing home. There were some friendly ones, but they seemed to not stay around too long.

I visited Westland Nursing facility in January of 2011. In general, I thought Westland was an excellent choice for someone that is looking for a placement for a friend or family member. The facility was beautiful inside and out and it was clean and well maintained and structured to fit anyone's individual needs. The grounds of the facility are beautiful and well maintained and very well structured and the landscape was beautiful and coordinated very well. The common areas of the facility were beautiful and had a much laid back, quiet atmosphere surrounding it. The surrounding neighborhood was also beautiful and complimented the facility in general the neighborhood was also beautiful and elegant looking. The residents' rooms are gorgeous and had a picture perfect view inside and out. The residents' rooms were of earth tone colors and the facility was also of earth tone colors also. The residents there were socializing with one another and seemed very happy together. Some of the residents were singing as one of the residents was playing the piano in a very large dining area. The facility did not smell and it was nice and clean. I really liked the décor in the facility it was all coordinated very well together and so did the furniture there. The furniture there was cherry and cedar wood but it was very beautiful to look at and I know that the residents also enjoy the beauty of the furniture and the other surrounding areas in and outside the facility. The staff and management of the facility are very professional, team, task oriented in their job duties and performance. They also treat the residents like family. I think the residents receive excellent and professional care there. While I was there, I noticed that the residents' food looked good and also smelled good. I noticed that a staff person was always in sight for the residents to see if they needed something a staff person was always available for them. I would give Westland Convalescent Center a five star rating for its excellence and expertise in patient care. Overall, Westland Nursing facility is an excellent choice for someone that is looking for a beautiful large nursing facility for a friend or family member who loves to interact with others in an elegant setting. There they would never get lonely because there are so many nice and wonderful people for them to interact with. I would recommend it to everyone, anyone, and anyone of any age group that is looking for a beautiful, elegant, nursing facility for a friend or family member. I know that they would like it there and I know that they would also do well there.
