We visited Birch Meadows in Three Rivers and it was not for us. It is laid out well, and it is a new facility (only three years old). There were too many restrictions so it was not right for us. They were welcoming, although they were almost secretive. They said something was going on in the dining room so they took us through a back door so we could not really see the front door - that was really strange. When we walked in, I smelled the bleach smell so they had just cleaned. It looked really clean. It is very new and very bright. The major downfall of that place was there were single rooms. My parents would not be able to bring their own furniture, and the bathrooms were not located in their rooms. You have to physically take the residents to the bathroom every time they need to go. I understand their thinking about the bathroom issue and not having them in the rooms because they believe falls happen the most while doing that. It is just unfortunate that it is a major drawback for me and my parents. It seemed to be more of a hands-on facility than just assisted living. It is like a stepping stone between assisted living and a nursing home. It gave that type of feeling. It works for them but it wouldn't work for us.
