What to Consider About Memory Care in Norwood

Norwood is a small, family friendly suburb of Boston, Massachusetts, a state with over 130,000 diagnosed Alzheimer's and dementia patients. Norwood itself has a population of 11,000, 15 percent of whom are seniors over 65. Many of these seniors may have Alzheimer's or dementia and need care in one of the city's close to 20 memory care facilities.

Memory care facilities are regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which requires certain security measures for residents, staff-to-patient ratios and around-the-clock supervision. This includes both assisted living facilities that have separate memory care wings as well as Alzheimer's-only treatment centers, referred to as dementia special care units (DSCUs). Other memory care facilities attached to assisted living communities are called special care residences (SCR).

Benefits and Drawbacks of Memory Care in Norwood

  • Norwood residents, like all those in Massachusetts, are not subject to a state tax on Social Security income or disability benefits. This may be helpful as families budget money for a loved one's memory care fees.  In addition, there are several other exemptions for seniors and those with a qualifying disability.
  • Weather in Norwood means cold, snowy winters with January lows in the teens and an average of 55 inches of snow per year. Summers are warm, with July high temperatures averaging 82 degrees. Seniors who are sensitive to high heat may be comfortable here, although those in memory care with health conditions aggravated by cold may be uncomfortable.
  • The Norwood area is home to world-class medical facilities, including those specializing in brain health and dementia care such as Holy Family Hospital and Tewkesbury Hospital, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
  • Norwood's cost of living is higher than the national average, mostly due to housing costs nearly 2.5 times the national average. This may affect memory care fees, as the cost of operations in these facilities might increase. Families budgeting for memory care will need to take this into account.

Memory Care Laws and Regulations in Norwood

Norwood-area memory care communities must adhere to the comprehensive set of state laws and regulations that all memory care communities in Massachusetts are required to follow. Visit our Memory Care in Massachusetts page for more information about these laws.
