My father has moved into Tonganoxie Nursing Center. It's good. It's clean and it's not cluttered. He's in a semi-private room, and he shares a room with somebody else. They would provide him with everything he wants if he'd just asked them. He's called me a couple of times and said, "I need this" and I said, "Put the nurse on and I'll talk to her," and she says, "Well, he's already had that already" or "I'll give it to him." They have TVs in their rooms. They have a piano in the lunchroom. There are a lot of different things that they could do. They probably have games and stuff that they can play. The only food I've seen so far is soup and other stuff, but I haven't tried it. The dining area is nice. They have enough tables for all the people. They don't make them come down all at one time. They have four people at a table, and I've seen them feeding people over there. My dad has had an appointment out of the nursing home once or twice and they've missed getting him there. My dad loves to go to the VA and he goes to the one in Topeka, so they have to transport him there and I have to meet him. When he went in, they made sure to get all his appointments written down. The transportation lady didn't get it, so they couldn't take him to his appointment. One of them, they ended up doing a video call, and I couldn't get on the line to hear about it. He's on Medicaid.

For the past year, this building has been upgraded inside and out with new roof, parking, van, and new management team. i think the new owners take nursing home care seriously. Food has been good to excellent with a certified chef, activities had new leadership, there is a new Medical Director, business office team, and they still have an amazing therapy department. Staff have been shook up and the good ones are staying for the long haul. Our family member has never been happier or healthier. There is no smell or dirty hallways or rooms. Staff greet you and they know their residents. if you have a concern, it gets addressed quickly. i was actually shocked to find a nursing home with old fashioned values.

Cnas and nurses very good in general. Activities poor and poorly run. Good workers quit often out of frustration. Housekeeping and laundry are well run. food is very poor. Chef tries to present good meals, but is restricted by budget. Management is difficult to deal with. Physical therapy is excellent and highly recommended. Would not encourage anyone to bring a loved one here. Ran into many roadblocks with paperwork when leaving for another state. Glad to be gone except for friends left behind. Bus was out of use for literally months. Also, no permanent driver. Many improvements are needed. Such a small facility should run much smoother.

I recently visited this facility and a number of others as well. I was able to visit without feeling like they were "trying" to sell the facility; it sold itself. The facility had no smells that were unbecoming and the residents were smiling. There was a very nice aviary with some lovely birds and bird feeders were placed all around the outside of the building as well. Areas were clean and the staff was pleasant. The meal that was being served was nicely done. The presentation was lovely and recognizable. There was a baked lasagna with vegetable and a very nice salad was being served. Lots of color on the plates and everyone seemed to be enjoying the meal. The residents were being served as if they were in a restaurant setting rather than a nursing home.

This facility is clean and the decor is inviting. They have been taking steps in recent years to make the residents feel more like they are living at home and less like they are living in a hospital setting. The staff is friendly and my friend who lives there has never complained to me otherwise. They offer daily activities which he really enjoys. His favorite is the resident senate, where he and other elected residents help to make decisions regarding the facility on behalf of everyone who lives there. His only complaint about the building was when they transitioned from one Director of Dietary Services to another and the menu changed from what he was used to. (They no longer offer routine meals such as pasta every Monday, pizza every Friday, etc.) In general he seems very happy at this facility.
