About The Heritage at Northern Hills in Sioux City, Iowa

No retirement community in the Sioux City, Iowa area can boast the long-standing, positive reputation that Northern Hills Independent Living & Assisted Living merits. The community has retained the same director throughout its 15 years serving seniors. "People know what they're going to get," says senior living counselor Sheryl Ford.

Northern Hills' mission is to view residents as family members and individuals with unique interests. Specific needs are addressed as they evolve. Ms. Ford loves that "we meet people where they're at." Seeing themselves as an extension of residents' families, employees of Northern Hills have made the care of each senior top priority.

Nestled within the Leeds neighborhood in Sioux City, the community fits in with the region's style so that Northern Hills residents feel they are a part of the community. Small pets are welcome, a comfort to not only the owners, but to the other residents, as well. Assisted living residents enjoy full-sized refrigerators and microwaves, paid cable TV and Internet, complimentary laundry facilities, detached garages, an onsite beauty salon, and a lovely courtyard.

Especially noteworthy is the community's award-winning enrichment program. Facilitators are willing to change the program according to residents' preferences. Upon arrival, clients are interviewed not only about their physical needs, but their interests and favorite activities. Outings to see plays and other performances, farmers' markets and participation in cultural and recreational activities are commonplace for Northern Hills. And frequently, the entertainment comes to the facility, including musical performers and other amusements.

And the food! Northern Hills provides an elegant, well-appointed dining room with top-notch meals, based on resident favorites, and even a private dining room is available at no charge for parties. Schedule a tour to experience Northern Hills for yourself.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My parents moved to The Heritage at Northern Hills. It is a very nice place, and they're very attentive to the people that live here and caring. They have larger rooms than what I have found in the other facilities. They have a nice courtyard for people to walk in. They have plenty of parking for those who are visiting. They have a lot of different activities trying to keep everyone active and moving. We've seen some others a lot higher priced and give fewer amenities and less space for the residents. I think it's very comparable to the level of care that they are receiving. I chose The Heritage at Northern Hills because of the location and because the other residents are well cared for. When I walked through to see, they were happy. They seemed to enjoy their place.

Beautiful facility with friendly, loving staff. My mom will be 97 next month and has been at Heritage NH going into her 10th year; she first lived in Independent and then transitioned to Assisted. It has been a wonderful experience for her as well as her family knowing that the attentive, caring staff have got her back. In addition, they partner closely with the family member(s) to ensure quality of care. Can't say enough good things about this facility. I attribute her amazing age and health status to the excellent care she has received.

I visited this facility

We visited the assisted living at Heritage at Northern Hills. It's a beautiful facility. The staff was very nice and they acknowledge you. We cannot afford private pay for two years, and as soon as your funding is gone, you move, but I was very impressed. They have transportation for doctors' appointments. The staff member I met was very friendly and very easy to talk to. I met the administrative staff.

I visited my mom in Northern Hills last November. The facility is very nice. The apartment wasn’t very large, but it was adequate for an older person. The kitchen was not very large and there wasn’t much counter space in the kitchenette. Also, it was far from the dining room and it was hard for her to walk down from the second floor. The cleanliness factor was very nice. The attitude of the staff was very good. They were very nice to her -- including the nurse. They had activities and they had a beauty shop, too, which she used. The food was okay, it wasn’t outstanding, but the dining facility was very nice. It was restaurant style. It was a good place.

I visited this facility

This past weekend we went to visit my wife's Aunt and our old church. We spent much of early Sunday afternoon going from facility to facility (predominantly assisted living and nursing care homes) bringing baked goods and donating Christmas supplies. Another group is going back in a couple of weeks to help set-up the decorations. As such along the way we stopped at Northern Hills Retirement(where a number of the church members have parents or grandparents) and brought a bunch of pies and cookies. We were there for about half an hour and I walked around and had a nurse give me an impromptu tour. Overall the size of the place is fairly standard, the apartments are not overly expansive, but about the size of a decent apartment. Even though it was Sunday I could hear a vacuum running in another area of the facility, so cleanliness is important. The whole facility smelled fresh and clean. The residents were in good spirits (granted I don't know how much of that was because we brought pies and cookies) and seemed to be genuinely happy in general. One of the best things I saw was that a majority of the residents I saw had alert pendants so if they went off to do something and had an issue, it would be easy to call for help. Overall, it was a very nice facility that seemed to have a great atmosphere and happy residents.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I went to Iowa to visit my grandmother at her retirement community. I had no idea that she was living in complete luxury. The staff was very nice and really cared about each and every one of the residents. It is nice to know my grandmother is in good and responsible hands. She enjoys the experience very much from what I can gather. She is a huge fan of the Hawkeyes and watches every game they play. I enjoyed the lunch that I shared with her at the very nice dining hall, the food was excellent and it was obvious that the chef was very talented. The facility also welcomes her little dog "Artemis" which was a major selling point for her. She said it was a rarity in the industry. I would absolutely recommend this place if you are considering a retirement community. My grandmother really enjoys her time here as she should. A++

My grandparents both lived in this facility for the last couple years of their lives. They participated in a variety of social activities such as bingo and cards. My grandfather was especially fond of the staff who would come to check on him every day and help him bathe when necessary. The staff was all very polite and supportive and promoted a happy and healthy environment. I spent time with many of the people living there aside from my grandparents. They all seemed to be relatively happy and satisfied. The inhabitants were free to come and go as they pleased and were not committed to their rooms, which was nice. It would have been nice to have more space for them outside to walk around and enjoy the weather. However, the outdoor area was acceptable. All meals were provided every day and this was a nice social gathering for everyone. The food options were satisfactory and even desirable to some.
