I took mom to respite care at The Springs of Vernon Hills and they did an excellent job. They have daycare and respite care. They took excellent care of her. They did activities, they did her hair, and they polished her nails. She had a room to herself with an adjoining bathroom. She can roll in her walker right in the bathroom, but for safety purposes, somebody had to be there while she took her shower. The room was totally set up. It was a memory care facility, so it's totally locked, but she could go outside in the garden. They fed them three meals a day and healthy snacks. They have a setup menu and we had lunch there. They had a crab salad, which was very good, but mom didn't like it, so they made her a turkey sausage, omelette, and toast, and she ate every bit of it. She enjoyed her whole stay there. It was a great experience for her. The staff was wonderful. It was gorgeous. It had an outside garden with a lot of plants and a walkway, and sometimes they cook outside. She could move around the facility and I told them to encourage her to get up and do the activities. I was just very satisfied with them. If I have to go away again, I would use them for respite care.

We were very impressed with The Springs of Vernon Hills, the physical facility, the staff, and their level of care in terms of the memory care unit. I was just concerned that every little room doesn't have its own bathroom, and we did not want our friend to have to share a bathroom because that would be very distressing to her. The rooms were on the small side and the ones with the shared bathrooms were not so great. The dining area was lovely. We saw cooking going on with the residents, they had a TV area, a beautiful spa room for the ladies that had a massage therapy chair and aromatherapy, and it's a very quiet peaceful area. They also had a place for the guys with a big fireplace. My friend has dementia, but she is not agitated and she does not escape from areas where she is, and at The Springs, I felt that there wasn't enough separation between people who just had mild to moderate dementia and those who were flight risk or combative.
