I am/was a resident of this facility

I have been a resident for 5 months. I live in a Villa. I have 2 bed rooms, a kitchen, a garage, a living room and a dining area. I use one bedroom for an office. I have a lot of books. Staff and residents are extremely friendly. I could prepare all my meals but I prefer to eat my evening meal in the formal dining room because I enjoy a great variety and eating with others. A large variety of activities at various levels of exercise from card playing to more formal exercise classes and a gym. On-site and off-site activities. Visit and check us out.

Villa St. Benedict was a wonderful place. It was very homely and they allow pets. One thing I really liked about it was looked like an apartment building where you can make friends. They had different layouts that you could look at, and they have excellent activities to keep you busy, from taking trips out somewhere to arts and bingo. They also have a bar, a restaurant style dining room, a gift shop, a beauty parlor, and an ice cream parlor. The staff was friendly and wanted to make sure your questions were answered and understood. If you needed to be shown somewhere, they would show you.

We toured Villa St. Benedict Benedale. We liked it. The overall experience was excellent. The staff was very confident, kind, and informative. The rooms were very nice. The location was excellent. The location, the property, the facility, the grounds, the surroundings, and the amenities were all A+. The dining area was very nice, no complaints. There is a church. There is a place to watch TV. There are places to walk and visit. All of those things were very desirable. The activities that they have seemed to be very good.

I visited this facility

We toured Villa St. Benedict. They had independent where they had people who lived in townhomes or whatever, and then there was the main facility where it was senior care. And then I do know that they had a memory care facility. The upkeep was very nice. The facility overall was extremely nice. I think one thing that lured us to look at is my father is a Catholic and he likes to go to church every Sunday. And one of the benefits is that they have a chapel inside the building, so he never would have to leave the building to go to mass. They also had a nice social setting and a nice fireplace. They even had a bar. I think we had visited that facility on a Friday, and there were quite a few people out there drinking wine, laughing, and having fun. It looked like it was very social for people of that age. I remember they had a lot of amenities as far as being able to go to a barber or hairdresser. They also had a weight room and I think they had a mini bank in the facility. I know they had amenities that take your parent to a doctor or the store, and I know they had a lot of social activities off-campus as well if you wanted to participate. I'm sure that was an additional fee, though. They also had a nice banquet facility for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the food, based on what I saw on the menu, had a full spectrum from something very simple to something very elaborate. Overall, I like the facility. It was very clean and well kept. I remember the grounds were on a very large campus, so it allowed for walks outside. I know they had a garden area where I believe the chef would grow different types of vegetables or anything to help and assist in preparing a meal. They just had a lot of active activities as far as chess, checkers, and dancing. There was so much that I don't think you could go bored at that facility. He could have spent a week there, which I thought would have been good for him just to get a feel for it, but he never got to that point. I know he liked the facility. My dad's very social and he liked talking with the people in there, but he changed his mind as far as exploring or wanting to go down that path.

Provider Response

David, thank you for your glowing commentary of Villa St. Benedict. If and when your father decides this would be his lifestyle,we are always here to assist.

We looked at a lot of independent living communities and my father could not be happier with his decision to move to Villa St. Benedict. The staff is wonderful, the facility is beautiful and my father feels very safe and well cared for. He loves the restaurant quality meals and all of the other conveniences.

Provider Response

Jane, thank you so much for your kind review! We are very happy we could provide your father with positive experiences.

I visited this facility

We were very impressed with the tour we got yesterday at Villa St. Benedict. We're happy with their At Your Service care services over and above that they have in independent living. We know that the unit would work for my mom and financially she qualifies for them. We're just waiting to see when she makes her decision. We did an in-person unit tour and they put us in a conference room with just my mom and I and did a virtual tour. They walked us through all of the amenities and the restaurants and things like that. We also did a virtual tour by Zoom two weeks ago. I took my mom to actually see the unit they have available with the floor plan that she's interested in. The room was very clean. I was impressed. It's very nice. She was very impressed. It's clean, comforting, warm, and had a very elegant feel when you walk through. I think her only hesitation is going from a very safe environment right now to a living center where people are in and out all the time, but that's a temporary thing. I think she would be happy if she knows that February 15th, they're all getting vaccinated then she would have no hesitation moving in March 1st. She was very pleased with the people she met. She met the RN who oversees the "At Your Service." I don't know if she's the director of nursing or she's just the director of that program. Mom felt very comfortable there. The very little part that we could see was very elegant. We arrived and met with the RN. They explained the Covid protocol while we go to the unit. We did that in the beginning and walked. While we're going in there, I saw staff enforcing the social distancing, wiping down the handrails and the steps, and then when we came out after doing the unit tour and after doing the video tour, I saw that same staff person again wiping down, which was probably an hour later. We were very impressed with that and their screening process. Everywhere we looked, somebody was wiping down the surface or standing 6 feet apart. We met the director of physical therapy, we met a couple of people in the marketing area, and they were just very friendly. We met the director of nursing and the salesperson, and they're very used to dealing with people of different levels of physical ability and different levels in their independence. They are only delivering meals right now, but we have heard tremendous reviews from people we know. My dad's cousin used to live there and they were always raving about the food quality. We discussed the food pricing, which was surprisingly affordable and we looked at their menu for what they had on their New Year's Eve celebration and what they were serving yesterday. They try to give as much of a dining experience, but we did not actually taste the food. It is absolutely beautiful, welcoming, and had gorgeous grounds. Transportation services to be able to see a doctor within 10 miles at no cost is included in the service fees for each month. All of the amenities and the accessibility to the amenities were well thought out, the way they have them and where they're located, and also that they offer both covered and outside parking. Their parking for visitors was kind of full. We just can't say anything better about the place. We really, really liked it.

I visited this facility

We visited Villa St. Benedict in person, but then the staff member went down the hall with her iPad and showed us things. They were fine. We only had very, very brief interactions because of COVID. Everybody was fine. We just knew it wasn't the right place, but there wasn't actually any complaint to have. They have good grounds. They had the same amenities that everybody else has. We didn't get into their facilities that much. It's an old monastery type thing that had been redone. Not very homey. Other people may find it fine for their purposes.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother has been living at the facility for a year now, and she loves it. She is in the smallest apartment available, but it is more than adequate for her. It has a large living room, bedroom with walk-in closet, full kitchen with range/oven, full size fridge, dishwasher and microwave, and a bathroom. There is also a stackable washer/dryer. The staff is very attentive. The nurse noticed that that she was not taking her medications at the right time, and informed me right away. They also alert me when she need additional medication. The staff is very polite and they communicate well. The activities are setup like a cruise ship; there are lots of things to do with others if you like social events, but you can stay in your room if you'd like. In addition to weekly trips to the grocery / drug stores, there are also special events like concerts at North Central College, a movie on site every Sunday in the Great room, and Wii Bowling tournaments. In December, the residents took a bus into downtown Chicago for lunch in the Walnut Room at Macy's and a Christmas concert right after. The food is varied and tastes good. Residents can choose from a Deli/Cafe, Bar/Lounge, or formal sit-down restaurant foe their meal choices, and meals are included in the monthly fee. The campus is great for walking, especially once the weather warms up. There are walking paths with benches, so it's easy to get some exercise or find an isolated spot to read a book. There are gazebos outside the restaurant so dining al fresco is an option. All in all, it's a good fit for mom. She has plenty of opportunities for interaction and she is enjoying her time there.

Provider Response

Wayne, thank you for taking the time to let the world know about your mom's positive experiences at Villa St. Benedict. Have a great day!

My mother moved in slightly over a year ago and I have been thoroughly pleased. The facility is very clean, the setting is beautiful, there are plenty of activities, and a staff who is excited about getting residents involved. The rooms are very pleasant and easily accessible. I think the clincher was the magnificent church onsite. No longer driving in the cold snowy Chicago winter to get to church. Just a walk down the hallway. Regarding the pricing, there may be cheaper options but not with the amenities that are important to our family.

Provider Response

We are so happy that your mother has made a smooth transition into our community and that she has taken full advantage of everything we have to offer to make it her home. We look forward to her being part of our family for years to come!

Villa St. Benedict is very nice. The layout seemed like there were a lot of very long hallways so it strikes me as being a lot of walking. There's very good maintenance and it's well-taken care of, but a little bit dated. The staff member who toured us around was excellent. They have a TV room, computer room, and a little library.

I am very happy that we chose the Benedale Center for our mother. She is very happy about the different activities (especially bingo) and raves about the food. She has the privacy of her own bedroom and bath. We have found the staff to be genuinely caring, professional and friendly.. It us most assuring for us to know that she is living in a healthy, safe environment with caring people. We did look at other places but this was the best by far!

We moved my mother to Villa St Benedict a year ago. After a year's worth of experience, I can state that the place is fantastic! The staff, amenities, food, activities, facility...all great!! Most importantly, my mom feels the same way. She constantly comments on how clean the place is, which, coming from her, is quite a compliment. We feel very fortunate, and relieved, that she is in such a wonderful environment. (Did I mention the awesome bar / lounge / patio area??) We are especially grateful for how the staff (Phyllis) worked with us and was flexible with move-in arrangements as we struggled to convince our mother that it was time to move out of her house. Phyllis understood the tensions and helped us navigate the process. Without hesitation, I recommend VSB.

Villa St. Benedict was nice, had a lot of people, and a lot of activities. It was very religious, which was important to us. They have a nice restaurant which reminds me of a cruise ship. It's expensive.

We went to Villa St. Benedict. It was good and definitely one that my parents thought about going to. It was an active community with several resources and amenities that my parents liked. They had apartments or condo units that were fairly large. Even their one-bedroom was large and luxurious.

Villa St. Benedict is probably the Cadillac of places; it was beautiful -- very expensive -- and you have to buy in. We ate in the Bistro or deli, and it was very good. It’s like a small café. I think they only serve dinner in the dining area. The staff was very helpful, pleasant, and very welcoming. They had a bell choir, Bingo, cards, and games. They have a craft room where people could go and do scrapbook or make things, and there are several activities every day.

Provider Response

Thank you for visiting VSB and your wonderful commentary... We offer many amenities and all utlities that are included in the monthly service fee, which when you do a Compare the Value listing can prove to be very eye opening and great value ! Please come back again to an event or dine with us, so we can go over some of the Benefits and Amenities. Warmest Regards. Sales & Marketing 630.725.7033.

The apartments were beautiful at Villa St. Benedict, but it seemed very still and quiet without any people out. We also found out that it was a buy-in facility where you have to put down an amount that was way outside of what we are looking to do.

Provider Response

Thank you for visiting Villa St. Benedict....yes we are a very unique community surrounded by beautiful grounds. This is a very residential independent setting, so it can be at times peaceful and quiet in some of the communal areas... just the way the residents prefer. We have many activities and social things on our calendar (as noted on our website)and in different areas of the campus which are available for residents to participate as they like. This is an independent active community, so many residents are out and about. And as a buy in, CCRC the money they invest is for their long term planning and for many more amenities than a townhome complex or condo community would offer. Please you are welcome to call me anytime so that I can further explain all that our community offers and benefits for your senior retirement planning. 630.725.7033- SMD

Very nice. Clean. Love most things about this place. Employees are nice and pleasant. A couple of the concierges could use some customer service training. They're unpleasant and look like you are bothering them. Food is good, however, plan on staying at least 2 to 2 1/2 hours if you eat in the dining room. Servers are pleasant and friendly, but inexperienced . Food takes forever. Apts are nice, like the amenities. Expensive.

Provider Response

We appreciate your visit to our community and your pleasant review of our apartments, amenities, culinary and employees...that are very hospitable, which is part of our Benedictine Tradition. Our culinary experience is of fine dining and with special orders that are prepared daily and the extensive menu offered; allowing time for meals is part of our relaxing atmosphere. We hope that you would visit with us again, so we can offer further information on our community and amenities and costs involved. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. SMD- Phyllis

We visited the Villa St. Benedict, and it was very nice. We love everything about it except when you have to move up to another level of care it is $9000 and $12000, and we don’t have much income. The apartments were fine, and the bistro, the shop and the entertainment were fine as well. The food was good; we had soup and chicken. I would recommend it to anybody who can afford it.

Villa St. Benedict is a very beautiful facility. I couldn't really find anything wrong with it. But it's very pricey. Just to get into the place, you're talking almost $200,000. That's kind of pricey when you're looking at somebody in their 80s. It is beautiful. The grounds are massive. It's the largest place out of all the places I went to. My mom is already in her 80s. It just doesn't make sense in my mind to be putting out $200,000 because you own the unit. It is very large. You can even have your own little duplex and you can live off on your own, which I didn't like. They need to come in to the main building for food. I didn't care for that. But that's okay for people who are younger than my mother. They have a beautiful church inside the building. Everything is beautiful in there. They had all sorts of activities, like exercises. They're across the street from a university, so they would have the students who are studying to be physical therapists work with the residents there to help them with their exercise. They had the biggest gym out of any place I saw. When you go there and you've seen it, you're in awe because it is beautiful until they tell you the price.
