The San Gabriel Memory Care in Glen Carbon is a very clean and fairly well-run place. They communicate with me quite often. The staff is very, very friendly and some of them are very outgoing as far as with my mother, personally. They have all kinds of activities but she doesn't care to do any of them. They have sing-alongs, they play bowling, and they have arts and crafts. They're usually doing something, but she doesn't care to participate. With the food, I wish they could be a little more specialized, as far as each person's likes and dislikes. Other than that, the food's okay. I would say, I feel more comfortable there than in a lot of places around.

I feel incredibly lucky to have found San Gabriel in Glen Carbon. The staff have been amazing in caring for my mom and making the transition as easy as it could be for us both. Communication has been very good and The small size of the community means that the staff gets to know each resident and there is a lot of 1 on 1 time. No one is getting lost in the shuffle. We were able to decorate mom's room with familiar things and she thought her apartment was beautiful which helped a lot. Activities that have continued during quarantine include manicures, art and craft projects, and visiting musicians. My mom really enjoyed supervising the holiday decorations as they went up. Before my mom moved in, the head cook asked what her favorite foods were and made an effort to incorporate some of them in the menus. My mom is very fussy but says the food is good and the dining room is clean and bright. I'm very glad my mom is safe and well taken care of at San Gabriel.

My husband was in San Gabriel Memory Care right after he had a stroke. I brought him home after that, and then he went to another facility. He stayed in San Gabriel for almost a year. The facility was clean and nice, but they didn't have activities for the residents at all. The food was good. While he was there, I don't know if they ever went out on the patio. It's a pretty facility, nice and clean, but the difference between this and the other one would be the size and the ability for the residents to be walking and getting around. The rooms were spacious, but the area for them to walk around wasn't quite as big as the other place he's been to. The staff seemed to have younger people, and they didn't seem to know how to deal with the older people that well.
