Gidwitz is a good place for assisted living. It is expensive but the rooms are nice, if a bit small. There are many good things here. However, the standard of the food at Gidwitz is disgraceful. The food is tired, stodgy, floury, and unimaginatively repetitive. The tired old salad with the tinned cut acidic pizza olives is a disgrace - who would eat this? Where is fresh produce? Where is care and variety? Often leftover food from one meal is served up again as "lasagne" or some such, at another meal. Very unappetizing to see this. Someone who doesnt care is in charge of the food, that is obvious. This is an expensive place to live and this low standard of food is totally inexcusable. The residents are continually complaining but no notice is being taken of their complaints just comments like "we will be looking into this issue". Why is nothing being done?? Who is supervising the kitchen manager and the chef? Why don't you care what garbage the residents are being served? The staff in the diningroom also are not welcoming, and behave like they are doing the residents a favor to serve them. They are often brusque and surly. A nice smile, a few friendly words, and a good attitude would be appreciated. PLEASE IMPROVE THE FOOD!!!!!

My parents live at Weinberg Community. Both my parents are at Gidwitz Place for the assisted living, but my dad goes to The Friend Center which is in the same building for programs and activities special for people with dementia. The staff and management is so accommodating and they truly know and care about each of their residents. It is a very homey, warm feeling.

The manager of Gidwitz Place took me around on a guided tour to some of the rooms. The rooms were comfortable, and I liked them. The staff was very helpful and the food was good. The problem with these places is that I couldn't use my G.I. benefits. I'm a veteran. And some won't allow my 10-lb little dog, while some do.

My father lived at Gidwitz for four years until he passed away. Physically it was in nice shape and he lived in a large unit with two bedrooms. For the most part he felt that the people were nice--but occasionally had some issues with certain members of management. Unlike a lot of elderly people, he had a hearty appetite even in his later years. He felt that the portions at Gidwitz were just adequate, not what you would call generous. And while you could always ask for more, he found doing so embarrassing. They had some activities, including outings to local stores, plays and restaurants. But I felt that they could have upped the activity portion of their programming. In general it was an okay place for him to live. He did not love it--but I can't think of any assisted living facility that he would have loved.

Nice living space, great selection of activities and a staff that monitors closely. Two of my friends parents had great experiences there.
