In a nutshell, San Jose ALF is a Godsend. Originally, I had transferred my 93-year-old mother to another private ALF, but due to some questionable, last-minute changes by the owner, I needed to quickly find another facility. A family friend suggested San Jose ALF and I am glad that she did. As the facility is a converted home, it is located in a pleasant and quiet residential area. The house feels open and airy, rooms are comfortable and spacious (even the semi-private ones!), and owners Jose and Fabiola have gone out of their way to make sure my mother feels welcome and as comfortable as possible. The atmosphere is very homey, giving it a nicely casual feeling. I've met almost all of the other residents (all female at this writing) and they all look happy to be there. The food is home-cooked and generous portions are served. (and smells delicious!) A final note - my mom has a cat for emotional support (Small pets are accepted, provided the resident can provide care for it and pays a non-refundable pet fee). At the other facility, he spent the first four days under her bed, frightened and skittish. The first day at San Jose ALF, he was resting comfortably on mom's bed like he had been there for years. All in all, San Jose ALF is a welcome alternative to the 'money first, care second' mindset of the corporate-run assisted living facilities. Currently there are plenty of things on my mind, but thanks to San Jose's warm, caring owners and staff, worrying about the care my mother is receiving is no longer one of them.

The reason why I chose San Jose ALF was that it was close to me. It was very clean, and the people were friendly. It did not smell like urine like the current place that she has been in; that is a big issue. It was only six people versus where she is at now. Everything is light. It is very open and friendly. They have home cooked meals. The other residents were friendly and nice. They have nice outdoor areas, and they are organized. We ended up going with them for all those reasons. The staff who toured me was the owner.
