I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband is at Aspire at Beneva and I'm so upset about him being in his room with this man. If you're going to put my husband with somebody, at least put him with somebody compatible. This man's TV is so loud. When you walk by, it vibrates your body. They don't have the same taste. This man's listening to Andy Griffith show and my husband's pretty much on the news and that kind of information, but he can't even listen to his news. My husband has dementia. So, half the time when his food comes in, he just looks at it. He has no clue what to do with it. If I'm not there at eating time, he doesn't eat. I come in unexpectedly just to see what's happening with his food and his trays were sitting in and he's looking at it. I said, "Are you going to eat?" He said "I don't know what to do with that. What is that?" So, I'm usually there at dinner time because I work during the day, so I feed him his dinner but other than that, they just drop off his plate and leave. Nobody comes in to help him. There's a lot of things that he can't think and do and they're just totally ignoring him. He had a turkey sandwich yesterday. It had one slice of meat on it and two pieces of bread. Then he gets iced tea every day. They don't even ask him if he wants coffee. He's a coffee drinker and they just put down the iced tea and that's it. One day I was there, and I asked "Don't you all have coffee?" They said, "Oh, he has to ask for that." I said "He doesn't know how to ask for it. You should give him coffee. He likes coffee." They aren't considering his dementia at all. The facility is old. It's been around a long time, but it's clean. You walk in and it's very presentable. His bed always looks clean and made. The shower looks like it's kept up. They have a list of activities but my husband does not go to any of them because he hasn't got a clue of what it is. They have a movie at 6:00. They have the game hour. They have a church and different things.

I visited this facility

Please do not evaluate this facility by the online reviews. Instead, take a drive out to Beneva and take a tour. December 1st began a whole new look of fresh paint, decorating, etc. We did not find the home dirty in any way and it was decorated nicely for Christmas. They are working on many improvements, like the two courtyards, etc. The staff we did see were cordial and very helpful., so please take a tour, then decide.

My family member was at this facility for health care and phyiscal therapy. While the physical therapy people were wonderful, the other care was awful. I found pills she was suppose to take on the dirty floor. She experienced very low sugar attacks at least 3 times during her short stay. When she finally went to the hospital due to an infection, she pleaded with the hospital not to hurt her. I feel she was mistreated at the facility. I would never recomend anyone leaving your loved one at this place.

Never would I imagine a facility that is suppose to care for a elderly person do just the opposite. They told hospice, he was not declining to the point of needing them. Refused them access. Yet he dies days later and looked as if he hadn’t eaten in weeks. Shame on you for everything you said to our family, shame on you for blaming Governor DeSantis. You brought your political bias into the death the of our dad. Your facility should be shut down in my opinion and in my opinion all of you should lose your license to work with any living being. You deserve negative stars and I’m disgusted that the only way I can review you is if I give you 1 star. What a shame. Please please for the love of your family I would not put a family member there.

Beneva Lakes was very reasonably priced and everything was right on. They offered everything that she needed and everything that she didn't. For example, they would check on her if she wanted and they were the best place I looked at. I liked the fact that the administrator of the place was known to all the staff and residents. She would stop and take her time to talk to them even though she was showing us around. It showed me that they were more important and I found that very comforting. The atmosphere was excellent, it was clean, and everything smelled nice. The dining room looks like a restaurant, and the people that were living there were out and about. There's the recreation room where you can watch videos, read books, or play games. Several nights a week they have activities. It's a caring facility, but it's also a respectful community. Like if you don't want to be bothered then that's fine, but if you don't show up for anything within a day they check on you again. The staff was busy doing what they should be doing, nobody was laughing or leaning on the walls.

My mother entered Beneva Lakes in March for rehab due to a fall. Management was unresponsive if not rude to two basic requests. I was repeatedly told she needed to stay another couple weeks for 2.5 months. I repeatedly received contradicting information from management. I was told if she left without the doctor’s discharge she would not be eligible for home health rehab. She was told she had to sit in a wheelchair or lie in bed. If she was in a wheelchair she was placed in a day room which was a distressing environment for her. Home health couldn’t believe she was kept for 90 days with such little progress. I recommend each member of management be placed in a room under the same conditions for 90 days and see what happens.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My brother was a patient at Beneva Lakes Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Sarasota, Florida in March 2016. Unfortunately we could not checkout the ratings of this facility before he was assigned to it. There were very serious problems with the facility and its management. Concerning the facility, his room’s toilet leaked and the drain to the wash basin drained very slowly, causing a back-up that made washing hands difficult and unsanitary. Though he complained, nothing was done to fix these problems during his stay of about two weeks. But the most concerning aspect of his stay there was that he was held there without his consent in the last days after his medical problem was no longer being treated. When he said he wanted to leave it was implied that Medicare would not pay for services if he chose to leave without their authorization. That gave him the impression that he would be financially responsible for the services he received. This threat is entirely false and the person who made it and the facility should face very serious consequences when reported to Medicare authorities. The medical treatments had ended days earlier and the only pretext for keeping him there was that he was still receiving physical therapy. But he had passed all his therapy evaluations and was told by the therapist that he was fine. Beneva apparently wanted him to stay at least another week so that they could continue to receive payment from Medicare. Furthermore, when I tried calling (more than once) both the social services staff person and the facility’s director to find out why he was being held, it took more than 24 hours for the social services staff person to call me back. It took my telling her that they were obligated to release him when he ask for them to do so.

My mom was at this facility for a total of 12 days. With my dad ,brother and I all visiting and calling frequently. The nurse who gave me the tour was friendly. I grew up around nursing homes. I gave them a 3 outta 5 placement only because we had no choices. We needed a nursing and assisted living facility, that was within walking distance. 12 days. The worst decision I've ever made. Of course mom always had her fake smile on for us. She knew how things worked after everyone went home. Keep your parents safe at home. I witnessed a woman asking to go to the restroom. She was told she had to wait. Dinner was like hearding cows. My mom went to Drs Hospital. Smelling. The nurse there bathed her. She was disgusted. Not worth it. NoOne can care for your parents like You.

This facility Emeritus at Beneva Park (Lamplight of Sarasota) reminded me of a nursing home. It might as well have been a nursing home because that's the only type of activity they have going. They weren't doing anything to encourage the residents. They assumed that you were children. The activities that are scheduled are for those people who have a lot of brain damage to all the way to up to making furniture. The person who took me on the tour was nice and friendly. The rooms are half the quality of the ones I'm in right now.

My sister is at Lamplight. She won't be staying very long in the place. Although it seems nice, it's not the place for her yet. Most people in there are in wheelchairs and on walkers. She went in there for knee surgery, and hopefully she won't need a walker soon, and she certainly doesn't need a wheelchair. There's nothing wrong with the place. It's just that the people who are actually in the place are not compatible with what I thought I could find for her. She is very unhappy, and I hate to see her that unhappy. The room is fine. She eats whatever she wants to eat, but she doesn't like to be on a schedule. The administrators are very cheerful and very helpful. She's coming back home.

My brother was at Lamplight, and he was very unhappy. The dining area was horrendous. They were frequently running out of food. There would be 90 people trying to come in the dining room at one time, and there was a long wait. Sometimes my brother would wait an hour, nobody would take an order, and he would just leave. Then they tried to address that by having everybody pre-order their food. So, he pre-ordered for lunch, I think it was an egg salad sandwich, and when he went there, they said they ran out of bread. So, they gave him a scoop of watery egg salad. He said he lifted it up with his fork and it ran right through the fork. They are trying to change it. I heard that they have two sittings now per meal as opposed to one. However, my brother liked the care. The people were very caring. Actually, several of the nursing assistants visited him in the new facility. They loved him and they were very responsive. He wanted to move back there.

We choose Emeritus because it has a good recommendation. It is in the area where we want her to be. It is clean. The people working there are very nice and very friendly. They have activities. Though some of the carpeting are a little shabby, but other than that I think it is fine. Some of the rooms have really nice facing and they have a garden. The one thing bad about it is the parking floods when it rains. It has a low level and the whole front of the parking lot floods.

My mother was at Emeritus. I'd say it was satisfactory. The staff was nice. They had activities but she didn't participate. You had to pay a community fee that's non refundable. I did sign a contract but within 24 hours, my mom wanted to go home and they wouldn’t let me out of there. She got there on the 11th of October. With $1800 a month, she paid for the whole month of October. She stayed a week and they still billed her through November 15. She didn't even want to be there and it cost her over $4,000 to be there for one week. They can fill those rooms so I was angry. My disappointment was they're just more about making money than they are to patient care. I feel a little deceived and a little ripped off by them to be honest. They kind of drop you like a hot potato once they have your name on the dotted line and I did not like that at all. I would never go back there.

We moved my friend to Emeritus. The facility was quite satisfactory. It was clean. The rooms were nice and large. It's more than enough room for a double bed. It has a huge dresser, a flat screen TV, and chairs for the visitors. It was freshly painted, carpeted with a new air condition system. The staff seemed nice, and professional. They also seemed they have enough people to do the job.

Emeritus at Beneva Park was nice and she enjoyed being there. The staff was very friendly. The rooms were not really big but it was adequate for one person. I tried the food once and it was tasty. I was not aware of all the activities they had but I knew she played bingo and went to happy hour every Friday.

Emeritus at Beneva Park was recommended by the rehab place that my mother was in right now. We chose it because it's on the same major road that I live plus it's not very far from her doctor's office and we are moving in next Friday. Her room is about a size of a motel room. I haven't tried the food when I visited there, but the menu looks pretty decent.

I visited this facility

My visits to the facility were usually not planned. I never witnessed anything irregular. I typically visited during the day and my friend's wife always looked clean and contented. There is a beauty salon on the premises and I noticed that her hair was often styled and her gray hair was colored as she preferred. Sometimes she wasn't there and it was usually because she was playing bingo or some other game in one of the activity rooms with the other residents. Once, I walked in on her eating a meal- a steak and cheese sandwich with french fries which looked delicious and made me very hungry. The facility always looked very clean to me and nicely decorated. It did not have an institutional feel. It did not spell of urine and was rather quiet. The grounds were well maintained. My contact with staff was minimal, but the aides were always polite and friendly to me. I also witnessed them being very patient with my friend's wife. She could be demanding at times and I noticed that they attended to her quickly to see what they could do for her. All in all I rate this facility very highly from what I could see.
