My husband stayed at Royal Care of Avon Park. He was there for skilled nursing care because he had to have medications and an I.V. They did everything they promised to do, and they were helpful. My husband was more ill than we realized when he went there. For a few weeks, he was in a private room. It was nice. It was just a regular kind of skilled nursing room. It was clean and neat. It had all the things that he would need to get around and motivate him. Then they moved him to a semi-private room, and that was OK for what my husband needed at the time. The staff was helpful and concerned. They did their care meetings. They provided physical therapy and whatever else he would allow them to do. The food looked OK to me. He just didn't eat it because he didn't have an appetite due to the medication he was on.

My husband went to Royal Care after having a stroke. We had the most horrific experience that you can imagine. From day 1 nothing but lies from the staff. I was told I could have video chats with my husband every day as much as I wanted. It was only 3 times per week. The family was told by a nurse that if my husband did not wake up at meal time he would not get his food. I was also told that I could pick up his laundry each week and deliver clean laundry. Because of that I did not label his clothing therefore 4 pair of his shorts were missing when I picked him up. Every day I would call him as well as other family members on the regular phone line. Every time in the evening a patient would answer the phone and than he would have to get a nurse to bring the phone to my husband. Who was running the rehab the patients or the nurses??? My insurance company wanted some information from Royal Care and they would not provide it. My insurance company said they can't pay with out the information. I was told by 2 nurses that because of that they stopped his therapy, although the person in charged said that was not true. Why would the nurses say that if it wasn't true???? At one time I talked to a lady in the office to explain what was wrong with my husband and she said "well we can't help him" so I said why is he here, and she said "I don't know". I could go on and on but there's no more room. This place gets MINUS 4 Stars.

Momma had a stroke ~ Tampa General listed 4 places in or close to Avon Park where we live for therapy. We siblings toured all 4. Judging by outside appearance of buildings Royal Care was the oldest. (But well maintained) Inside is what turned our heads. ALL staff was happy, personable & caring in their interaction with patients, other staff & visitors. The RC patients were also much happier even in thei personal battles of recovery. The Therapy center was head & shoulders above other facilieties as well. It was bright airy and welcoming. It was full of folks doing their daily work outs with therapists. My momma improved dramatically while there. The food was outstanding, they offered a really great variety of tasty & attractive meals not the same old nursing home style. Like we saw in Kentucky with my mother in law.and the coffee was good. They are so good they serve meals on wheels for our Avon Park community. If I needed help with anything for momma any staff member passing by would either stop to help or run for help - I never heard "Not my job" Honestly I can not say enough about the care my momma received. RC is rated 5 star on line but We give it 10 stars! Avon Park is a very nice community, you should visit AvonPark Lakes Baptist Church if you come here, but there are other great churches. We have a cool Historical Museum, State College, many excellent restraunts, shopping, the historic Jacaranda Hotel, Advent Hospital is about 6 miles away, many good doctors. Donaldson Park is a playground picnic/ shuffel board/tennis court swimming area you can enjoy. and we are only about 10 miles from Highlands Hammock State Park with catwalks, camp ground, trails & picnic area, Museum, snack shop & sometimes music in the park.

Our good friend of 40 years was admitted and seems to want to leave ASAP. She is under heavy medication, but of course they will not tell us just what and how much - due to privacy. We did not come with a power of attorney, so probably could not expect more, but our 81 year old friend doesn't seem happy nor wanting to remain there any longer than required. We hope to obtain enough information as to her future need ASAP and will probably move her out of there soon. Most workers seems reluctant to give us much info and even seemed somewhat questionable when observing me taking photos of the listing of grievance references. Wonder why? We will continue to pursue this action in getting her moved before she becomes overmedicated and loosing her thinking process, which was very strong before entering the facility. Hopefully, this will help others in this facility.

Royal Care is all good. My mother went in there from a hospital. They gave her a nice shower and got her all cleaned up. They have been very caring for her. The people have so much patience and so kind. They treat them like their own family.
Regretting the decision

Never, ever put your loved one in this facility. There are a couple of helpful staff members, but a resident will wait over an hour at times for a CNA to help with going to the toilet, etc. No one returns calls; everyone is always in meetings. There are different nurses on daily, no consistency. Residents are neglected and requests from family members for the most basic care needs are ignored. Stay away!

The facility is very old and definitely needs to be renovated. It is very dated and it makes for a dreary and depressing lifestyle. I have had two different relatives live there and within months we moved them because we noticed a change for the worst in their hope and excitement for living. Unfortunately, I feel that this is one of those facilities that doesn't promote happy, healthy elderly living. In comparison to other nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the area, this is quite far down on my list. Even the appearance on the outside was not impressive and was not inviting whatsoever. The staff was very helpful, however there were no resources or activities for my relative to participate in. When a person enters a facility as a resident, it is important for them to have opportunities to still have a high quality of life and I did not think that Royal Care of Avon Park did this. I would recommend that anyone in this area who is seeking placement should look elsewhere.

Most of the staff was knowledgeable and very friendly. They took care of the residents fast but with courtesy. There were a few bad apples in the staff; they were too rough with residents, rude. All residents were taken care of and most were very happy. Meals were given with help offered and never meanly. Most residents needed help with most basic tasks yet all was taken care of without any fuss or complaints on both parts. The facility was very clean and so were the residents. With haircuts and nail care every week. They also had social time every day, whether it is bingo, karaoke, or meal times. Every person was addressed by their name and helped equally. The view out every rooms window was nice and they ever even building a bench swing. I believe over all facility was very good and clean and worked like a well-oiled clock with compassion added in.
