My mother is in Lutheran Home of Southbury. They've been very nice and good to my mother. She likes the food. I haven't been able to get to visit her in a while because of the virus. One time I visited her and she was happy with where she was and how things were going. She doesn't participate in a lot of things, but she does do some chair exercise type activities, and maybe they'll go watch a movie in the evening. They have entertainment coming in in the afternoons as well. They have lots of activities, but she doesn't participate in too many of them. She's comfortable there. I haven't seen much of the staff. My mother says if she pushes her button, they're right there, they're very attentive to her, so that's a good thing. They were renovating when I was there. A lot of stuff was torn up. I think once things are finished it's gonna be real nice. It's not bad even with the construction and disruptions. Her room looks out over the playground. There's a school nearby. She's getting good care there. It's worth the price.

There are people (who live there) sitting in the halls yelling all day long. It is so noisy, impossible to rest. It always seems like complete chaos. Nobody knows who is doing what. And the food is usually cold.

This home is all about window dressing. They are always understaffed, unorganized, making mistakes with care, meds. Sometimes the food is ok, sometimes inedible. It is like they put all of the money into the furniture and management. Fortunately, mom was here for rehab so I think the care was better than it is for the long termers.

My mother is complains about the quality of the food- often. She has been a resident there for almost 3 years. The food is often uneatable .Tonight she told me that she got a box with a cold sandwich from a deli. This is very unsettling to me as I live on the West Coast and my sisters are not allowed to leave food for her because of the corona virus. She only gets 1 shower a week and often complains about how cold the bathroom is. She very often has to wait for long periods to be assisted to the bathroom and this is especially disturbing because she is on Lasix. My mother does have nice things to say about many of her caregivers. She often tells me that the weekend staff seem to be very young, untrained and uncaring. My mother has also often commented that the staff doesn’t inform her why they are doing things like taking blood and treat her as if she is mentally incapacitated when she is totally mentally coherent. I have been on the phone with my mother when staff have come in and basically ordered my mother off the phone because they needed to do something- hasn’t felt like they treated her with respect or courtesy. Just sort of ordering her around. My other shares a room with a lovely roommate. This is indeed a blessing. Unfortunately, my mother doesn’t have a window and her life is basically just a bed and chair. Very little room. My mother often doesn’t know what the weather is like unless she sees a weather report on tv. All in all, my mother is receiving quite adequate care, just very lacking in qualities that could make her life spark joy.

They work very hard at taking good care of my demented Father. No home is perfect nor are they.
