I have worked in the healthcare field for over 15 years as a patient liaison/advocate for home health. An important aspect of patient care is how their after care is planned. Through the years, I’ve developed many relationships with the staff; nursing, therapy, admin, and of course, the social work team to ensure we are providing their patients with the most excellent treatment once they are discharged and sent home. Some of the patients at Aspen Living have had challenging home environments, requiring more time, resources and planning for the patient. The entire staff - but most notably, the social work team has always provided me with a clear picture of the patients home dynamic, ordering all extra essential equipment, and having detailed meetings leading up to the patient going home - to ensure safety, physical care, and mental health/well being of the patient once they are home. It takes a whole team to advocate and care for the patients. Aspen Living’s team goes above and beyond every day with their hard work, teamwork, good attitudes, and patient care. One encounter I had working alongside Aspen Living: I went in to the facility over a weekend to visit with the social worker about a patient. It got to be lunch time, and she stood up and said, I need to go help serve lunch, but can you wait? I helped serve lunch that day, too. The kitchen staff and servers were kind, efficient - but what was easily the most impressive to me was their interaction with each and every resident. As I stumbled through handing out trays - a staff member would gently say to me on occasion, ‘oh, that’s Ms. _____, she gets cranberry juice. Here, I’ll get it for her.’ I understand the staff would know the residents - half of them live there full time and this is their home. However, to watch such kind, patient, fun and individualized loving/caring interaction with each resident was a privilege to witness. I’ve worked in a kitchen - it’s hard, hot, tedious work. I saw nothing but joy and kindness in each and every staff that day in the dining room. Watching the social worker jump in to help out a shift was incredibly insightful as well. Of course the residents knew her - but watching her call each by name, knowing how they take their coffee, and the friendly joking banter they had with her was witnessing how a ‘family’ interacts at mealtime. It’s not just a job to the Aspen Living team, it’s personal.
