My husband had been in an assisted living home for 2 yrs. when it was unexpectedly sold & we were given 30 days notice to vacate. Finding the CANTRIL HOUSE has been a true BLESSING! This house is so warm, friendly & caring that I'm sure my husband will thrive.

I have a family friend who is 93 years old and lives at Cantril House. I have visited her often and I am always impressed with the quality of the service and the wonderful atmosphere at this assisted living facility. The building itself is a beautiful brick house that was built in the early twentieth century and has been renovated with comfortable, private quarters. In the common area there is a piano, and there is often entertainment. Cantril House is located in a beautiful residential neighborhood with well-groomed walking trails and new sidewalks. My friend also tells me that she is pleased with the food she receives and she says the staff is very helpful. Cantril house provides lots of services to the residents including laundry, three meals a day, housekeeping, activities and weekly "wellness" visits from a trained medical staff. They even have a beauty shop! Overall, Cantril House seems live a wonderful place to live.

This facility is in a unique house, which is on the register of historic buildings. Located right in the heart of town, it's easy to get to and close to small shops and dining. Visitors must find parking on the street, but there's plenty of it. Inside, Cantril House feels like a home"”nicely decorated and well appointed, with several common areas equipped with nice and new furniture. My young daughter who was visiting with me gave a huge compliment with her observation: "It smells so good in here!" While there is no specialized memory care offered, more intensive care is available as Assisted Living Level 2, which includes help with bathing and dressing"”and Assisted Living Level 3, offering help for those who are incontinent. Costs increase for higher care levels. The rooms all have a private bath with a shower"”and all can be furnished by the residents. The smaller rooms, usually occupied by residents receiving Medicaid, are large enough to accommodate a bed, table, and couch comfortably; the larger rooms have a seating area connected to the other living space. Outside each room, next to the doorway, is a shadowbox decorated to reflect the resident's interests, background, and history. The food smells great. And a huge variety is offered, catering to many likes, cooked to order. The kitchen is also open throughout the day, and juice and coffee are available all day. The staff is extremely friendly"”with low turnover rate; most staff members have been on the job there 8 to 10 years. There is 24-hour care"”with a nurse available the whole time. Each resident also has an emergency pendant that can be activated at any time"”a nice touch. Amenities include wireless Internet service and a large outdoor meeting and garden area tended by the residents. A big range of activities are offered including wine and cheese evenings and an exercise group; most activities are run by residents and volunteers. A dog lives onsite, which many residents enjoy. The cost starts at $2,700 a month for the smaller units, which includes meals and light housekeeping and three loads of laundry each week. This is a small facility, which caps out at 16 people, so one possible limitation may be lack of availability. While Cantril House offers excellent care and housing, it would not be a good option for people in need of memory care; its location on a corner might not be safe for those who might tend to wander. -This reviewer, Colleen Chwialkowski, has a degree in Gerontology and has worked in Activities, Marketing and Admissions, and Case Management in various nursing home and assisted living settings.
