The most important factor to me in finding a place for my elderly friend was the staff. I don’t care how beautiful a place is or how great a view the apartments have if the staff are not caring and attentive too all the needs of the residents it’s worthless in my opinion. Merrill Gardens on Bankers Hill is led by Lori, an amazing director who goes so far and above what we expected. She truly cares for every residents well being and happiness. Director Lori is always willing to discuss any concerns whatever they are personally. Her dedication and leadership to her staff relieve the stress of my worrying for my friends well being. The care staff i’ve met are kind and professional as well. The accommodations are very nice as are the quality of the meals and the many activities provided by the activities staff. If a resident needs to go somewhere, be it a medical appointment or Sunday Church, it’s never a bother to arrange transport in the facility town car or shuttle vans. Extra care if and when needed is always available. We are very happy having made the decision to be at Merrill Gardens.

We toured Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill. It's expensive and the salesman has little product knowledge. The tour was for assisted living but they don't have much for assisted living. We don't know because the salesman couldn't answer any questions. They had courtyards. They have lots of activities. They have lots of outings. We're looking at a studio for my mom, so they showed us the studio. They also showed us a one-bedroom. We had a meal. The food was good, but it just was not for my mom.

My mother will be moving into Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill. I like that it's small, the location is six blocks from where I work, which is a big seller, and the entire staff was just really on top of everything. The apartment is quite a large studio on the fourth floor with a balcony that overlooks downtown San Diego and the bay. They have a private dining room for family events, they have a rooftop garden, and they also have quite a large lounge and library area for the family. We just had a meal today and it was quite good. They have a lovely daily menu. The activities looked pretty good. It's not a large selection because it's only 90 people in the community, but they have quite a good daily selection. It's well run with a small staff that knows all the residents by name and all their dislikes and likes. It's a nice, small, well-run community, very clean, and lovely.

My Mom was not ready to go into an assisted living facility.......but since she has been there we find that we have to work around her schedule to visit. The activities are endless as well as the friendships that she has made. It is a family environment from the General Manager to the staff and care givers. You can't go wrong leaving your loved ones in their hands.

Merrill Gardens is a really nice place. It's right next to Balboa Park, which made it very expensive. It's a really nice place. The staff answered my questions and were really very easy to get along with. The staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable. For most of the senior living that you go to, there's a certain time for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. At Merrill Gardens, it's like a restaurant. I really also like that they're very open. I suppose it's clean because it really looks nice. I was told they take a bus every Wednesday right up to the hospital.

I visited MG with my mom, having been referred there by my mother-in-law, and my mom's home care company guys spoke very highly of it. It did not disappoint! Although the manager was on vacation, the young lady who gave us the tour was very thorough and took her time. She was homegrown there and enthusiastic about the place. The rooms are nice enough, the dining room and foyer make you feel like you are in the MGM rather than the MG, and the rooftop deck is fab. More importantly, the residents we saw were friendly, social, lively, and seemed happy. I saw an old friend there who is a resident, a great artist, and his art was on display in the common area. We were treated to a nice lunch, food was good, not rushed at all. I had forgotten that I mentioned my mom's birthday on the phone, which was coming up on the day following our visit. The staff brought out ice cream and cake for her, sang the birthday song... You had me at "happy birthday". :) So, there are warm & fuzzies, which is perfect. She's not ready yet, we are on the wait list, but we don't really need to see anyplace else. Dang, I can't wait to get old and live there!

My father has been at Merrill Gardens Bankers Hill for over 2 years. The staff is extremely helpful and sweet. The rooms are very clean and the cleaning staff does a wonderful job. Every time we go to visit him he is busy with all of the daily activities they offer and he enjoys them immensely . The residence are very friendly and most know you by name after a couple a visits. The food is outstanding, we have lunch and dinner together quite often and the variety an taste are suburb. Laura H. who oversees Merrill Gardens Bankers Hill is a welcoming director and is out speaking to the residence all the time with a great big smile on her face always, it is a very happy place with her around. I would recommend to check this place out before you go anywhere else!

Merrill Gardens has a wonderful cinema. It was very nice when you come inside. The rooms were very nice too. They have an exercise room and a library. They also have wifi for computers. They have a wonderful food, too. However, they didn't have a swimming pool.

Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill was great. My mother liked it, but she is not ready to move in. I liked the facility, the location, and the way things were set up. I liked their activities and the person who gave us the tour. She was nice and helpful.

Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill was a little formal and upscale. It was really great. I liked it there. They had everything, like different games and arts & crafts. It was a nice community that had various other programs and activities that they could take part in, like going out to stores and shopping. I liked the patio where they barbeque. It was very comfortable. The tables were nice. I liked that it was very relaxing. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and invited us to Thanksgiving dinner and all the different activities. The food was excellent.

Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill was very nice. The lady who escorted us around was really great, very nice, and very knowledgeable. I liked the color scheme and felt very comfortable with the way it was laid out. It had a good vibe when I walked in. They had all kinds of activities and a calendar of activities with cards and bingo. They had different people come out for lectures on different things.

Merrill Gardens was very nice, they have a place that was perfect for us at that time, but we’re just not ready to move yet. They’re well planned, the people seemed to be very nice there, and I think it’s one of the best places in San Diego.

Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill doesn’t fit what I need. Most of the people there need some sort of assistance and that’s not what I want. The room had kitchen facilities and a bathroom. They had a nurse on-site. The staff was very accommodating, very interested, and very pleasant. The chef was very good and very gracious. There had been some turnover just previous to my visit, so their staff seemed very minimal at the time. The manager was brand new, and I’m not so sure that she was very interested in showing me the place because she asked me why I was there and said I didn’t need to be there, which was not very gracious. They seemed to be limited and unwilling to be able to serve other kinds of people. The facility looked rather bare.

Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill was very nice. The people were very friendly, and the place looked warm. Should we decide to go into a senior living, we probably would go there. The apartment was adequate.

Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill was very modern and beautiful and looked like a fancy hotel, which kind of put me off. It was very urban. The common rooms were large, very comfortable and nice, but the actual units were very small. It is in a gorgeous spot with a beautiful view of the bay. It seemed like a lot of people just retired there. It was kind of expensive, but it would be perfect for some people. I don’t think it would have worked for my mom. It dazzled you with the looks, and I’m not sure what appeal it had beyond that. There weren’t a lot of grounds if you wanted to be outside. There are very small balconies. There is one little pathway, but if you’re in a wheelchair or a walker, there isn’t much area to be outside.

We understand that the urban location isn't the setting that you were looking for as you researched options for your mom. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance or answer any questions.

Merrill Gardens was nice. The rooms weren’t as large but nice and seemed OK. We tried the food and it was not good. The facility was good, but it really wasn’t as nice as the place we have chosen and the food was not good at all. I think they had a salon. They had a very small sitting room and a sun area upstairs like the roof; really pretty garden sun room or sun area, barbecue area, which was very nice.

My parents used to live at Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill. This place was very well designed for elderly people with its exceptional community and varied activities. The dining experience was always changing to improve and try to find out what the residents liked. They had a very well-trained staff. The community was small, and everybody knew each other. It's a very welcoming place.

I really like Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill. I saw the studio, the one-bedroom, and the two-bedroom units. That facility is fairly new and the rooms are bright. I especially liked the room in the corner with a balcony. They have a place for grilling on the top floor. I like this facility because it is near Balboa Park where I can walk around. The staff was great and very pleasant. The dining area was very open. I like the fact that I could cook my own food inside my apartment.

I love Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill. They had a very positive and open feel. The rooms were nice and spacious, bright, and cheery. They had a rooftop garden that overlooked all of San Diego Bay, which was really pretty at sunset. It was also easily accessible. They had an open café and a dining room that looked like a hotel. I really like this place a lot. It would be on the top of my list.

My grandmother has found a senior living care place a few days ago -- Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill. I think it is a very nice place. It has a nice dining area. It's almost like a restaurant set-up downstairs. It is a very nice facility. All the apartments are like 600 to 800 square feet. They have a kitchenette. Also, after you go and have surgery, the nurses would come to your room for three or four days to check your vitals and your blood pressure and such. Your meals are provided with your rent. You can go downstairs in the dining room anytime of the day you want, and they'll prepare anything you want from the restaurant. It is very nice. It is not like a medical facility; it is just like a retirement living home. The rooms and the apartments are very nice. The bedroom is very nice. It's got an overlook of almost all of downtown, so you get a nice view. From what I've seen, everyday there are shopping trips where they take the residents who can't drive out to the store. There are movie outings, outings to Balboa Park, and outings to museums around there. There are outings for them just to go out and have a picnic or walk around and go to certain shopping areas in the area. There are some very nice activities. They have a very nice library and a reading area. They even have a wine bar. They have a huge patio too. The facility is in a very nice area. The security is all closed doors except they're open during the day until 7 p.m. at night.

Merrill Gardens is the one that my sister has chosen. It’s a beautiful facility, only three or four years old. The people were just fantastic; I can’t say enough about it. The gal who took us around, her name was Nenette, and she was just wonderful. We have been back twice, we went back on Saturday for brunch, and we were there yesterday around lunch. The atmosphere was very nice; the staff all seems very professional and friendly. The room that she has chosen is nice and large. It has a little patio area so that she can go outside. It’s on the first floor near the dining room. She is very excited about this place.

Merrill Gardens is independent and assisted living. It’s modern and clean in appearance. It’s kind of like in the city, so there aren’t any grounds at all actually. The rooms are just very modern and updated. It’s very appealing, has an attractive look to it and is clean. I know my parents are not too crazy about the food though. They’re very caring, competent, and just very engaged with the residents. My folks are very very happy. However, I don’t like the point system that they use. Depending on how many services the resident requires, like if they have their medicine expensed to them, if they need assistance with their bath, getting down to the dining room, and every service that the resident has, they accumulate points. And those points are added to the cost translated to dollars. The more services you use the more points you accumulate and more you pay.
