The staff at Grand Lake Gardens who gave us the interview was extremely helpful. We felt very comfortable in that interview. She also took us around and showed us a couple of rooms, a 1-bedroom, and a 2-bedroom. I liked the setup of their dining room. You could order the menu of the day or you could order what you want from the menu. All the residents that I came across were quite friendly. My overall sense was that the residents were happy and comfortable there. I particularly liked the idea that they have acreage outside with a lot of foliage, shrubs, flowers, and trees. There's an area that's set aside with planter boxes where the residents can grow their own plants. We had lunch there and the food was quite acceptable. Even if the food wasn't that great, the people serving made it very pleasant.

I'm probably moving to Grand Lake Gardens. It's good on all counts, and they were very expensive. I wish it wasn't so expensive. The staff was tremendous, they were welcoming. I haven't tried the food but I've looked at the menu and it looks good. They don't have a hot pool. It's clean and well-decorated, and it's in a very congenial neighborhood. It's near everything since it's near downtown Oakland, including shopping areas. The 1-bedroom that I saw was generous.

Grand Lake Gardens felt like it was in a shady area on a hillside. There wasn't a lot of access to the sun. I didn't like the decor inside nor the service in the dining room, but the food was fine. They had a library, a craft area, an exercise room, a meeting room, a very pleasant garden for walking, and an outdoor area on the roof for walking.

Grand Lakes Garden does have a flexible food plan. They give you credit. They only charge you for what you actually eat there in the dining room. The facility is pretty good, much more straightforward. It is a very nice place, but it costs quite a lot of money to buy into that place, and that is another concern.

We chose Grand Lake Gardens because of the price and availability. The staff was very helpful. It looked clean, the amenities were great, and the accommodation was very nice. I looked at a 2-bedroom/1-bath. It was top-rated and modern. It has a good floor plan, and the closets are big.
