I visited this facility

Hillcrest was kind of spread out too much. It was way too big to get around for both me and my husband, but the staff was nice and extremely interested in having us there. They have a deal where whatever you pick, whether it's a one-bedroom cottage or a two-bedroom, they just gut the whole thing and fix the inside just like you want to have it. So that was a nice feature of the apartment. They tailor it to you on how you want the interior fixed.

The thing that made my mom choose Hillcrest was that there were people in her neighborhood that recommended it. They have health care such as a memory clinic and skilled care in the facility. What impressed me was that this facility had been there for a long time and several people had worked there for quite a long time. We got to meet their board chairman. They were friendly but were frank and helpful. They talked to us about the monetary issues right up front. The information was really direct and given to us without any salesmanship, and I liked that about them. The grounds are beautiful. The facility is very old. It's a large place, and it's right in the middle of its own little housing development. The trees on the grounds are beautiful. There are a lot of places you could go to. They have a library, all kinds of little seating areas, nooks, and outdoor areas that looked very comfortable. The apartment itself is small. They had a pool, water aerobics, and a very large function hall where you could have events.

I visited Hillcrest for my mom. It was beautiful, I wouldn't mind living there myself. We made a surprise visit, they didn't know we were coming, and they were just very, very nice. It seemed like everyone there was happy. They were doing some activities in a little circle, they were doing chair exercises. What made me feel good is they had an area where the residents couldn't escape to leave the premises. The director of marketing was awesome. She was just so thorough and so caring, she's just a nice person to deal with. Other than memory care, they have the gymnasium and they have a whole list of different things that people can do if they're ambulatory and able to do things. There were just a lot of activities and she gave me a schedule of them, there's something every day. So it would make somebody very happy. The apartments were very nice. Some of them had patio doors that you could walk out on to a patio area, and they were very spacious, and they all had an en suite in them.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My aunt is in Hillcrest. I thought it was set up pretty nice, the room has a bedroom, a full bathroom, a full kitchen, a small living room area, and she even has her own washer and dryer in her room. The dining area was big, they can choose what they want to eat, and they also have different places for dinner. However, there’s a buy-in.

Hillcrest is probably my ultimate favorite. I like that it is also in a secluded area even though it is still in the middle of the city. It's very quite, very serene, and very safe. It's like living in your own little neighborhood. It doesn't feel at all like a retirement community. They have everything for activities. They have bingo, performances, all kinds of clubs, and knitting. You name it, they have it for everybody. The people are really happy. The rooms are gorgeous and beautiful. I like that they're actual homes. I saw the menu, and everything seemed really fresh.

Hillcrest is two blocks from my house. I liked the staff, and they provide full hospice and medical care. The staff isn't overly friendly because they're busy, but everything was within the nurses' station, and no one's left out in the cold or way down the hall. They offer private rooms which you can decorate however you'd like. It's perfect for end of life. It's not beautiful, but it does the job.

Everything was really nice at Hillcrest. We were more interested in the cottages. One had 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, your own washing machine and dryer, and a small yard, so we were interested in it for our dog. The dining area looked very nice and large. The food was good. The residents were more active than the ones we saw at other communities.

Hillcrest is a wonderful place. I’ve been placing relatives in senior care and dementia care for 20 years, and by far this is the best place and fabulous. You walk in the door, and we had people that come to visit that said "oh my God this feels like home." It’s homey, and you always smells something good baking. Everybody is laughing and singing. They have a lot of music, they sing Christian hymns and Frank Sinatra tunes, and they have a bus trip every Thursday. It’s about $2000. The staff was excellent. I have never seen a facility that is specifically trained to handle dementia patients, and they are so tactful, happy, and loving. They love hugs and kisses. They are so understanding, they don’t do sleeping pills or drugs, and if they want to get up in the middle of the night, they can; one of the caretakers will sit with them and say do you want to walk or have some popcorn. It’s unbelievable; it’s better than home. The food is excellent; they say Hillcrest food is the best restaurant in town. Its home cooked and very flavorful. I have eaten several times; the family can have breakfast, lunch, or dinner with him.

Hillcrest is a wonderful place, and it's just great. The food is fantastic, they have a whole range of activities, they do a lot, and they're very active. It's a very good community and a lovely place. The dining area is extremely wonderful because their food is good, and the people are good servers. It's a nice place.

Our Hillcrest experience was very good, but when Mom was ready to move into the memory care unit, I didn't like it. She was in a one-bedroom that was really good, but I hated the memory care unit. They provide really good care, but their Alzheimer's unit was very depressing and dark, and the rooms were small. They charge more money every month.

Hillcrest was beautiful, and the layout was absolutely gorgeous, but they have an expensive buy-in. It was nice, clean, and modern. They have a friendly staff. They have a one-bedroom and den. It was just beautifully laid out with a dining room, living area, and a kitchenette. It was a washer and dryer, and it has its own balcony as well. They have barbecues, buses, and outings.

Hillcrest is the only place my mom will consider going to. I was very impressed with them. The woman who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable. The facility was beautiful. It's where my mother's mother had been, and it's in the area where my mother had grown up. It probably would be a good place for her to be.

I am/was a resident of this facility

We live in Brethren Hillcrest Homes, and it is great. We are doing excellent. We have a large living room with a large TV, a couch, reclining chairs, and a piano. For our activities, I walk, and my wife gardens. There are all kinds of activities, and every half hour there is something going on. The food is above average. We had turkey with gravy last night with cheesecake and strawberries for dessert, spinach and bacon salad, and mushroom soup. I like the ability to move from one level to the next -- from independent living where are in to assisted living to a nursing home -- and then they have a hospital.

Hillcrest was great, beautiful, have lots of gardens and they have a bird sanctuary and they were bigger. My concern was that it might be kind of big for somebody that has trouble walking, but I think everything is probably accessible in their area. It seemed like they had good medical attention in both. It is very nice looking, inviting like you would want to live there, and very well kept up. They have a pool, they have a lot of amenities, they have a chapel, and shuttles can just take them to places, and they have cottages. People help and showed us around; it was very nice. The food was really good, and they were stimulating them socially.

My grandmother is currently at this facility and has lived there for over a year now. It is fantastic. The staff is friendly and understanding. They are well trained in the aspects not only of the disease of Alzheimer's which they are dealing with but also in how to treat the patient and their families. The staff on the weekend is the part time workers that are working towards full time status while training, the weekday staff is absolutely the standard of excellence. I was skeptical about the care when I saw that my grandmother had lost so much wait and that you have to be "buzzed" in and out of the facility. Until I realized this was for the safety and security of the patients and that my grandmother is now eating healthier in their care than she has in her entire life (85+ years). Also, if you can afford to write a large check, paying for the year in advance will get you a discount.
