Windsor El Camino Care Center is a premier skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, providing patient-centered care in a warm and comfortable environment. Our goal is to help our residents increase their independence and reach their highest level of functionality. We provide a wide range of rehabilitation services with a focus on taking a proactive approach to recovery. Our services include physical, occupational, recreational, and speech therapies, advanced wound care, antibiotic therapy, respiratory and pulmonary care, pain management, and post-surgical care. On site, we offer social events, a range of indoor and outdoor activities, bedside TVs, and restaurant style dining.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Food is terrible Care is non existent Since my mom has been there she’s had a black eye broken nose and loss of teeth they lost her clothes and I’ve had to have her hearing aids replaced 4. Times unbelievable place and unbelievably dirty tried to speak with administrator still waiting run from this place

I am/was a resident of this facility

I moved into Windsor El Camino Care Center. The grounds are nice. They've done some improvements on the inside. When I first got here, the floors were still good, but they replaced the floors. So, that was nice. The majority of staff are pretty friendly once you get to know them. But like all nursing homes, there are ones that could use some bedside manner. The only thing that I have to complain about is the food, it is not good. They will kind of say, well, you're going to get this one thing and then you don't get it. Like, they're going to give us juice and they only give us water instead of juice. If they say we're going to get a bun to eat, they only give us white bread. That bothers me because some people are diabetic, and nutritionally-wise, sometimes they need the food. But they do give us good portions. They usually offer pretty good activities, but they're the same all the time. It's like we always watch the same movies, do the same trivia, and bingo. I would like to see them do a little bit more of a variety of things.

My mom started in rehab at Windsor El Camino Care Center because she was getting out of the hospital. However, my doctor said I needed to take care of myself and not be taking care of anyone, so she went from rehab to permanent resident there. It looked nice. The nursing staff was wonderful; however, the CNAs that we had to deal with were very indifferent and lazy. It took them three weeks to change my mom from the rehab area to the permanent area. When my mom was in Area 6, her food was cold. When she was in Area 1, her food was warm. The nursing staff in both areas were good. The CNAs in Area 1 were good. There were three residents in a room. There was not enough room and there was older furniture. We had a bad experience. When it comes to rehab, they're good. When it comes to permanent, they're not. My mom didn't do activities, but they had an activity room and an exercise room. They're maybe understaffed and underpaid. However, they didn't understand what we were trying to convey to them because English was their second language, and that was a problem. If you're doing board and care or you're doing skilled nursing or whatever, you need to understand the English language. I understand it's difficult, but it makes it that much harder and that much more frustrating and difficult for the clients. You have to explain and explain because they don't understand what you're trying to say.

My son is in Windsor El Camino Care Center. I didn't find it for him. When he was in the hospital, they transferred him from the hospital to the skilled nursing facility. He can do things for himself. With assistance, he can get dressed. With assistance, he can transfer from the bed to the wheelchair, from the wheelchair to the toilet. He feeds himself. Cognitive-wise, he's all there. He has problems with his speech because of the aphasia from the stroke. They seem to accommodate him pretty well with those needs that he has. But it's an old facility. As far as I can tell, when I go and visit there, it's clean. The staff seems to be good at doing their job. The people that work there don't get paid very much money and it's hard work. But my son doesn't get any extra help there. He doesn't get any further physical therapy or speech therapy. Those types of things are not available to him there, which is unfortunate because he should be getting those types of things. They don't include that. It's kind of an average. It's not a bad place. I've seen a lot worse places. But the staff are caring and nice. I don't think the food's very good, and they're not highly skilled, particularly. They could improve by having more types of things like physical therapy and speech therapy. That would be very helpful. That would be the biggest thing. I think they have an activities director there that does do activities. My son does a little bit of artwork because he has to use his left hand for things and he's not normally left-handed. He's normally right-handed, but that's paralyzed. However, I have to fight with them for months and months to get somebody to cut my son's nails. They let his nails grow so they curl over the ends of his fingers, so he has a hard time using the phone and stuff. I have to call over and over and over again to get somebody to cut his nails. That's not particularly great. I have to bug them constantly for months before he'll get his toenails and his fingernails trimmed. So it's not good.

My brother has been a resident in this facility for several years. It may not be the fanciest place. It may not be in the best area. But, the people who work there are amazing. I have been in very upscale places that looked good and had plush furnishings but the staff couldn’t care less. The staff here really do their best to provide care for the residents. I feel grateful and thankful for all they do for my sibling. They have a gym, several community rooms and other amenities. They cannot make people use them. There are books, games and as much interaction as one chooses. My brother has chosen not to use these resources, unfortunately.

My brother was a cancer patient transferred to Windsor El Camino from UCD. We were told he would have his own room since he was a cancer patient. He ended up in a room with an old man who would sit on the toilet with the door open. When we left him that night, we went over wound care with the CNA who promised to take great care of him. The next morning, we discovered his wound hadn't been treated the entire night, and he was now at risk of infection. That morning when we walked through the hall, the smell was blinding! The entire place was disgusting and dirty. When we complained to administration, they moved him to a private room. The wound care nurse was the best thing about that place. Sanitizer dispensers were empty, patients were very noisy and rude along with some of the CNAs. There was one instance when a CNA was looking out my brother's window, and started shouting at someone down in the parking lot. They forgot to give him his pain medication, and when we requested it they insisted that they had already administered a dose. That was the last straw! I took my brother home AMA, and that was the best decision I'd made in a long time. I would avoid sending anyone I cared about to this horrible place.

The neighborhood around this facility is not that great "“ there are high-density apartment buildings all around. Parking is sometimes inadequate. The grounds are not fantastic "“ there's a nice patio area in back with several chairs and one table. A smaller patio upstairs. There's also a third patio area for the staff, where they smoke. There are some walkways off of the back patio, but there's no loop "“ you have to go back and forth. The dining room is small but it seems nice. There is a rec room with a television, some tables and chairs. They have coffee, tea, and some games available, so that's a nice area, but sometimes it's used for case meetings so is unavailable to residents for an hour or so. The facility is a little older and worn. My father is currently in a private room. When we first got there, they placed him in a room with someone else that was very small and dark. The bed had to be manually adjusted, no chair for a visitor and there was no water until we asked for it. There are some staff members who are very professional and who are very caring and good at what they do, and there are some that are not that great. You need to go find the CNAs here a little bit more than at another facility my father used to stay at. It seems like there are not as many staff members at this facility. My father is currently on a pureed diet, so his food is pretty awful. The other residents' food looks to be fair. There is one television in the room for both clients, so the volume comes out of the television, rather than having the remotes that have speakers "“ so you can hear other residents' televisions loud and clear. They also don't provide personal hygiene wipes here, so we've been purchasing them for him. My father is at this facility because his physician has an office here. I would give this facility a 1.5 if I could.
