Through the AAA, seniors connect with information specialists who help them access community-based services such as prescription drug assistance, durable medical equipment loans and recreational activities to complement what they receive in assisted living. The agency administers the state Medicaid’s CHOICES program, which covers long-term care services. It also has SHIP counselors who help older adults understand their health insurance options and access public benefits.
Veterans Service Officer(423) 616-2088The nearest stationed officers from the state’s Department of Veterans Services are in Morristown, about 50 miles west of Kingsport. The VSO provides over-the-phone assistance to veterans and their families, helping them access VA benefits that may help cover assisted living, such as veterans’ and survivors’ pensions and Aid and Attendance. The office can also help seniors access medical services and wellness screenings in the community, along with peer counseling, transportation and emergency financial assistance.
Legal Aid of East Tennessee(865) 251-4944Legal Aid of East Tennessee is a regional nonprofit organization with licensed legal experts who provide information, assistance and advocacy for those aged 60 and over. Through this office, seniors get help with understanding assisted living contracts and resolving problems related to move-in and move-out procedures, excessive or inadequate care and billing errors. The office can also screen individuals for eligibility for public benefits that may help cover assisted living expenses, including Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid.
