According to Genworth Financial’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey, seniors in the United States typically pay $4,300 per month for assisted living services. However, fees vary considerably across the nation due to factors, such as state licensing requirements and local living costs. In Florida, care costs tend to be lower, with rates coming in at $3,700 per month. In Palm Beach County, which shares the Miami area’s assisted living cost data, average monthly rates are even lower at $3,500.  

The Cost of Assisted Living in Palm Beach County, FL and Nearby Cities

Palm Beach County is among the more economical options for seniors seeking assisted living in Florida at $3,500 monthly. Only a couple of cities have lower monthly rates, including the Tampa area, where seniors pay $3,225, and the Sebring area, where care costs are the lowest in the state at $2,895. In Jacksonville, assisted living fees exceed the state median but are lower than the overall national rate at $4,150. Care costs in Port St. Lucie are a little higher at $4,399, and in the Naples area, assisted living facilities charge $4,550 per month. The Villages, which is a planned 55+ community, is among the more expensive cities in the state for this level of care, with fees averaging $4,950 per month. The most expensive city for assisted living in Florida is Tallahassee, where seniors pay approximately $5,506 monthly.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Palm Beach County

In 2014, the state of Florida replaced all their HCBS waiver programs with the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program (SMMC-LTC), which helps eligible seniors pay for assisted living costs. Florida also has the Optional State Supplement (OSS), a non-Medicaid program available for qualified seniors.

Area Agency on Aging of Palm Beach/Treasure Coast(561) 684-5885The local Area Agency on Aging provides seniors in Palm Beach County with a wide array of free and low-cost services and resources. Through this agency, older adults access services, such as nutritional counseling, nonemergency medical transportation, congregate meals and financial assessment and maintenance, as well as specialized medical equipment and supplies. The agency also provides case management services to help older adults obtain the community services they need.
Palm Beach Vet Center(561) 422-1201The Palm Beach Vet Center is centrally located in Greenacres and provides a range of free services to veterans and their spouses or survivors. At this location, trained officers can screen veterans for eligibility for benefits that may help cover assisted living services, including the VA Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefit. The center can also help veterans gather the necessary paperwork, upgrade their discharge status, fill out paperwork and appeal denied claims. It’s open Monday through Saturday with morning and afternoon hours, and appointments outside of normal operating hours may be available upon request.
Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders(800) 963-5337The state’s SHINE program provides seniors with free, unbiased health insurance options counseling, which may help them identify their best options for covering assisted living expenses. This program is primarily staffed with volunteers who are trained to answer insurance-related questions and help seniors compare available Medicare Advantage Plans, prescription drug plans and Medicaid waivers. Volunteers can also help visitors sort and understand their medical bills, recognize and resolve billing errors and dispute denied healthcare claims.
Palm Beach County Senior Centers(561) 355-4750Palm Beach County is home to three senior centers, providing older adults with a variety of social and recreational options. At these centers, members participate in fitness and wellness programs, including age-friendly exercise classes and health education workshops. These centers host activities, such as arts and crafts, discussion groups, games, movie afternoons and holiday events. There are on-site libraries, as well as visits from the county’s mobile library, ensuring fresh reading material on a regular basis. No membership fee is required.
Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County(561) 655-8944Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit law agency that provides free civil legal services to qualifying residents in the county. Through this agency, seniors obtain assistance with accessing public benefits, including those that may help them pay for assisted living, such as Medicaid, SSI and Social Security and Managed Care and Long-Term Care. The office also provides public guardianship services and can make legal, financial and medical decisions on behalf of seniors who don’t have friends or family to fill the role and can’t afford a private guardian.
