Abbey Delray South was a nice community with some amenities and allowed us to kind of carry on the lifestyle we have right now until we needed another level of care and that next level of care was offered onsite. We also liked the life care concept that once you buy into the community, basically you're going to be taken care of. We can enjoy some shared amenities like gyms and pools and sports facilities and probably a few years down the road the meal a day or two meals a day or whatever is provided, those kinds of services will become more important. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. We showed up for an event that they had advertised, but we showed up at the wrong facility and they gave us a tour anyway. We actually wound up in the right place for us. It's right in town where everything's available. If you can't drive yourself, they provide transportation. The atmosphere seemed very comfortable. The lobby area and some of the common areas were very nicely decorated. I have been in one of the units years back. A friend of mine's parents was in that community, so I did see the inside of one of their single-family units, which is probably kind of what we're living in right now. It's comfortable. For the right person, it's a perfect arrangement. For us, we don't want to be in Florida. It's an older community, but it's been fairly well maintained.

My husband was transferred from Delray Hospital to Abby Delray South for rehab. On the second day as a patient, his hearing aids were stolen from the rolling cart. They were in a bright blue box from the hospital so it couldn't have been thrown out with his lunch. The facility says that they are not responsible. I finally filled out a grievance form on 1/16/23 but no one ever filled out the investigation part of the form to give back to me. All they say is that it hasn't been found. My husband was in hospital for ketoacidosis, a very serious diabetic complication. While there his blood sugar was way up. Turns out they gave him mashed potatoes at every meal and apple juice. Take your loved ones somewhere else!

I was very impressed with my tour of Abbey Delray South. It was very friendly, they had a lot of activities, and the people were very, very nice. The residents were very friendly and the staff was wonderful. The food was good too. I looked at their independent living.

We have chosen Abbey Delray South. We met people there, and everyone we met and spoke to candidly said how much they liked living there. We also like the apartment that we selected. It is a brand new apartment. We like the amenities. They have food service and health services, and they have assisted living on-premises. It's a life care contract that you enter into. All in all, we thought it was a nice place. It's undergoing some renovations to the building like the hallways and whatnot to update it. We have liked that very much from what we've seen. I have not tried the food, but I've seen the menus and talked to the people over there, and everyone was very complimentary. They have a salon, they have a fitness center, there's a library, and there's an auditorium where they have services.

My Mother is there now for Physical Therapy. She had a Partial Hip Replacement and a fractured Wrist. The Staff there are very friendly. I was and am impressed with the work ethic they demonstrate there. My Mothers room is always spotless. There are plenty of activities to engage in. The PT and entire staff were instrumental in helping my Mother heal. She is being released Friday 7/2. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone.

Provider Response

We are so happy to hear your mother's physical therapy is going well. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for us and share your kind words and thoughts about our community. - The Team at Abbey Delray South

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I have had 3 family members live at Abbey Delray South over the last 15 years. Generally they were happy living there. In recents months and years the quality of the services provided there and quality of life for its residents has significantly declined. My aunt remains a resident there, and recently moved from one level of care to another. She has no working phone in the ALF apt she is in now. I don't think she's been offered a telephone to maintain her connections outside of Abbey Delray. I have tried to call her everyday for the last two weeks without success. I have left 2 detailed messages for the Executive Director to ask for his help in resolving the issue and have not received a response. I will be calling the Palm Beach County Ombudsman later today to see if they can intervene on my aunt's behalf.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom bought into this lifecare facility in 2012 because some friends had moved there. All was great during her stay in independent living until this December in her apt., with the exception of the fact that her apt became infested with bedbugs. (Mom never left the property so the bedbugs obviously came from another apt or staff.). Since she is in the nursing home, covid19 broke out. My mom became very ill which was obvious To me during my daily telephone conversations with her. I had to notify nursing that something was OBVIOUSLY wrong! She was then rushed to the hospital and was very sick with covid. Because this is a lifecare community, they created a "covid unit" for their lifecare residents. Mom Was treated for about a week then discharged to Abbey South covid unit. The isolation unit was just that. She was completely isolated with nobody even checking on her fluid intake. Initially she was served solid goods without reading the hospital discharge paperwork or speaking to me, whIch indicated she had been on ONLY puréed foods. Had I not intervened AGAIN she wkdve choked on the solid foods. I was very distraught! Mom has advanced dementia so I'm her heakthcare advocate! And POA. They involved speech pathology, only after I brought the issue up and lauren did a Great job! Once again they thought mom was doing well, they said she tested covid negative and moved her back to her regular room. 2 days later I get a call she was rushed back to the hospital with oxygen level of 70. They immediately tested her and she was & as the drs said, had always been, positive for covid. I immediately called Abbey as those ramifications could've been huge! Once again we went through the hospital nightmare of trying to advocate remotely. Fortunately 1 of her 3 drS was outstanding in the hospital and delivered on all of his recommendations. That's rare when a patient is a 92 year old, with advanced dementia. She got released once again yesterday to the covid unit as she is still positive. I've made about 10 calls to get her status finally calling the admin mgr of the heakth center. He said he was outraged by my stories of the failure of his staff to update me on my moms status and promised to get back with me shortly with a nurse. That was 5 hours ago and needless to say I am extremely disappointed with the poor care my mom is receiving and the lack of communication that exists at abbey dekray south nursing home! Had my mom not bought into this place, I wldve removed her from there immediately! I still may!

Provider Response

Your mother's health and safety always come first, especially during this challenging COVID-19 period. Our team members continue to administer care with our residents' best interests at heart, and communication and collaboration with family members like yourself continues to be an important component of this. We're incredibly disheartened by your disappointment and take your concerns very seriously. To ensure your family's health care privacy, Jennifer Stevens, our executive director, will reach out to you directly ASAP. Thank you.

I am/was a resident of this facility

We moved in two months ago after visiting 10 other communities in a 10 mile radius of Boynton Beach. We are living in a Garden Home - a spacious facility having 1500 sq. ft. under air plus an attached garage, California style walk-in closets and some of the best kept grounds in the area. The staff is very dedicated to meeting all ones needs. There are two calendars with activities for the month. The second calendar is dedicated to physical activities provided for by a profession in house instructor. The complex offers a full lineup of lectures, entertainment, movies, etc. Travel to external events are scheduled and transportation to and from the theaters are offered. On campus healthcare services are offered in a separate dedicated facility.

Provider Response

Thank you so much for the positive review. Palm Beach County offers plenty senior living options and the fact that we stood out among the 10 you visited speaks volumes about the high quality lifestyle, care, services and amenities we offer residents. Excellence in everything we do is something we strive for each day and we're glad you're enjoying the overall experience so far. Here's to many years of wonderful memories!

On a positive note, the physical therpay was excellent. That was it!!!! I could not wait to get my mom out of this place. The nursing was sporadic. The care was horrible. My mother was NOT showered for days at a time!!!!!!! She actually fell there and needed stitches in her head. NO wound care at all!!!!!!!! She came home to a horrible hole in her head. They took her to the ED on a different occasion and did NOT notify family members. NO PHONE CALL AT ALL! My mom called me from the ED to tell me she was dropped off. I would hope that the staff becomes more family friendly .

Provider Response

The experience you describe does not reflect the values or reputation of our community. I'd very much like to learn more about this situation, and would welcome the opportunity to talk. Please reach out to me at your earliest convenience. -Rachel Blumberg, executive director

My parents lived at Abbey Delray South for 9 years. Unfortunately, once Abbey got bought by Lifespace Communities, the care for their residents went completely downhill. Both my parents passed away in their nursing facility (where I had to move them to from their independent living apartment for the last 6 months of their lives) My mother was in terrible pain and suffered due to the egregious mistakes made by their nursing staff. I was advocating for both my parents 24 hours a day and it still did not help. LifeSpace is all about profit and outward appearance. No money has been put into the infrastructure or improvements of the services or the quality of the care for their residents. I was witness to horrific conditions at this facility and recommend that you do not even consider this place for anyone you love.

I had the chance to visit Abbey Delray South, and I saw that they do have series of apartments, dining room, and single family homes, but their rooms were small. Everybody was very nice. They do have the basic activities.

Abbey Delray South had lovely people who were extra nice. We knew a couple of people there who speak highly of how they're treated.

The staff who accommodated us at Abbey Delray South was very personable, friendly, and helpful. We were impressed. We looked at and really liked a one-bedroom apartment and had some interactions with the friendly residents. We had a very, very good lunch in the dining room. Overall, we were impressed with the cleanliness and friendliness, and felt this is the one we would eventually choose.

Would give zero stars if I could. This place is horrible. My mom was there for rehab after brain surgery. My dad asked to make sure there was a fall alarm in the bed. They said they can't put a bed alarm on until there is an incident (backwards). I receive a call one am at 6am stating my mom fell out of the bed. My dad was supposed to be called but for some reason they called me out of state. I have no idea how long my mom was lying on the ground with no assistance. While my dad was driving there, the place took my mom to the hospital, without letting anyone know until my dad arrived. Abbey Delray would not hold my mom's bed for her while she was in the hospital. My dad went to pick up my mom's belongings and the administrator, Lee, who ignored my email and my dad's email in regards to the negligent fall, saw me, turned around and started shredding paperwork in my mom's file. My dad did not speak up as most of these rehab facilities are owned by the same management and he didn't want to get blackballed. Poor service, horrible care, Lee is untrustworthy and sneaky and I would never recommend this place.

I have friends living at Abbey Delray, and everything was very nice. It was a clean and well maintained community. They have swimming, gym, recreation in as far as cards, and everything you can possibly want. The menu was lovely and the food was good.

To be truthful I don't believe one star is warranted. My mother stayed at the Health Center. There is not enough staff. I was on the phone with her for 45 minutes before a person came to her aide as she had to use the bathroom and could not manage on her own. I called the front desk twice to ask for assistance. It was horribly painful to listen to my mother cry for help. There are many other complaints I could list but the above is enough. Don't let you parent stay here.

Don’t believe the star ratings. My mother went here for rehab after a broken hip. They were supposed to be one of the best in the area, very well known. They had her very drug and where very aggressive right away. The nursing staff was giving pain medicine to her when she was drossy. They seemed out of control with medicating so they didn’t need to deal with helping. We got her out of there as soon as possible. She left more injured than she arrived

Abbey Delray has independent living and assisted; they have a little bit of everything. It was nice, but my aunt is not there. It looked well-kept, they have a nice dining room set up, and they have a large dining room with lots of choices. They have an exercise room. The staff was busy doing other things, and we were looking for somebody to help us. I forgot her name, but she was very helpful.

Abbey Delray is more of a continuing care facility. It was reasonably priced. It's on about 40 acres, and it's off the road. They have little studios, 2-bedroom, and even 3-bedroom apartments. They also have maybe 740 sq. ft. single apartments in the main building, which is in a shape of W, and all the units overlook a garden or area of interest. That was quite nice. They have nice facilities with multi-apartments off-site. So there's probably a lot more there. There was an area that was closed off for the memory care patients. They also have the nursing care center, or more like an intensive care.

My father was here for 2 1/2 years before he passed away. For the most part he got good care but it cost over $100,000 for him to be there for that time. Very expensive and most of Dad's money. Also his aide pushed him into leaving her money and his car in his will. Be careful who is around your loved one. Abbey has strict rules about this, but the aides still try to get whatever they can. In the end she got nothing, but it caused the family thousands in expense and stress.
