I visited this facility

Aegis at Shadowridge was beautiful and seemed to have good staffing, good amenities, good activities, and a good location. What I liked least about it was that it was much more expensive than the others. The staff who assisted me with the tour was very attentive and thorough. There seemed to be a great variety and frequency of activities. The facilities were very nicely furnished, very clean, and it didn't smell. They had game rooms, a theater, a physical therapy center, a library, and a computer room.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband was in Aegis Living Shadowridge in Oceanside for about a month or so. He's there for memory care. The care was horrendous. When someone went to visit, he was wandering around this room with no clothing on. He was pooping on the carpet and no one was coming to his rescue. He's got dementia. At one point he got upset and broke the toilet seat off and it sat there on the floor for weeks. Nobody repaired the toilet so he had nowhere to go to the bathroom. People didn't come in to check on him, it was just awful. It was terrible and then when we complained about it, they said, "Oh, that will cost you more money if you want us to do those things." It just seemed, to me, to be basic care. When I took him to this other place, he's getting all that and more for $3000 a month less. It seems to me that it was more a business about making money than it was about caring for people. They just didn't care, all they wanted was more money. It was just horrible. They had activities but they never took him to them or encouraged him to go so he just sat in his room and stared at the wall. They never took him out of the room. He didn't have a television in his own room and they never took him out to a room where he could see some television. He just sat there and stared. He was very unhappy there. The facility itself was very, very nice. It's up-to-date and it's very clean. It just seems to me that for $7000 a month, he should get a lot of personal care and he got very little.

Provider Response

I am sorry to hear of your family's experience and that we were not able to provide the level of care your father needed despite efforts and discussions regarding his needs. Your comments about lack of engagement and attention are surprising knowing the care staff and the level of care and compassion they provide their residents. I would like to speak with you to learn more about the specifics of your family's experience so I can ensure any issues are addressed if needed. Please contact me directly so we can speak. Thank you, Lance Shenk VP Operations.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband is in Aegis Living Shadowridge. He has been staying there for about a month, and he is about to get out. I think it's a wonderful place, and he is getting stronger there every day. We are really pleased with the service, and I like the service that they give him. The staff are wonderful people, and it's a lovely facility. If people are interested, they need to get a hold of Katie and take a tour with her.

The first few years at this memory care facility were very good for my relative but, alas, as the fees increased the services declined. For the final year there the activities were few and far between, our concerns were brushed aside and the services we paid for were not provided, e.g., assistance with dental hygiene. An example of the mean spiritedness that seemed to dominate - staff were told to give residents half an Oreo cookie for their afternnon treat. Take that as a metaphor for the cost cutting that has taken hold there at Aegis.

Provider Response

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to read of your experience as they are not consistent with our care philosophy or expectations. I would encourage you to discuss your concerns with the General Manager at the community or contact me directly as we both would very much like the opportunity to learn more.

I visited this facility

The visit with Aegis at Shadowridge was good, but it was very expensive. Everything was fine as far as the facilities go, but I prefer to be closer to the ocean because it is warmer there. All they have are 1-bedroom apartments. They have small 1-bedrooms and larger 1-bedrooms, but the small ones didn't have kitchenettes.

Provider Response

I visited this facility

Aegis at Shadowridge was an excellent facility, relatively new, really upgraded, and really nice. They have all kinds of activities there for the people. They have RNs on staff, a nice patio, and a garden for people to go out to sit around in. It's a nice facility. They're a very well-staffed facility, and they take care of the residents there really nicely.

Provider Response

Thank you for your kind words and this wonderful review!

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mother has moved into Aegis at Shadowridge. Her room is an apartment-type, and it’s adequate. The staff is very good, very polite, very friendly, and really good about keeping a checklist. Since she’s been there, there has been one miscommunication, which could have easily been my or their fault. I have eaten there, and the food was good. The menu is home-style, so it seems like my mom is able to have the same choices as what she would make for herself at home. At dinner, she can either choose from that same kind of home-style menu or have a couple of options that are more restaurant-style. They take the residents out to town a couple of times a week and go out to lunch at a restaurant in town at least once a week, if they’d like to go, and have a theme each month. They go to the beach a couple of times a month, to the mall on a fairly regularly basis, and there’s a whole lot more to do, like arts and crafts and yoga. Since they’re memory care, they do a lot of brain games on a daily basis. My mom is still fairly new in the place, so she hasn’t learned the system all that well yet, but my understanding is that whenever she needs to get somewhere, they can make arrangements to get her there. However, I have not seen that in action yet.

I did not like Aegis at Shadowridge. The room my mom was put in was dirty, and they would not clean it. She was put in the memory care unit. The staff there was nice and friendly, but I will not go back and do business with them again because the lady who sells the rooms will say one thing and then later say that she did not say that. Once the sale is made, she no longer cares about the residents. The people who sell the rooms need to have more care and concern about the residents. They need to folllow through with what they say and the promises that they make. It’s just that we wanted some things done for mom that she just could not accommodate. It was just not a good experience for my mom.

I visited this facility

The one that we were most impressed with was Aegis. The staff was very friendly. The place had a nice ambiance to it. It seemed very pleasant, it was upscale, and it had more of an atmosphere of a nice retirement home as opposed to a place people just go to stay, so it was very nice. The rooms were both spacious and homey. The dining room was very nice.

I visited this facility

Aegis at Shadowridge was a nice facility as well, though not as new. I thought it was around 112 years old. It would be a very similar to the arrangement where my parents were at, with the exception that they had memory capability as well. I thought they offered a variety of different activities tailored to their particular situation. The rooms were a pretty good size. They had one bedroom, but they weren’t as new as the one that we saw at the other facility, but they were certainly nicely kept up. The meal selection looked good. The staff seemed to be very helpful. They were very friendly, very knowledgeable and very accommodating. They were also very courteous and answered all the questions I had.

To me, the cost at Aegis is a lower-priced one, but it looked like it might be OK. The people were very nice when I talked with them. The facility looked clean, but I didn't actually go into any rooms. Also, I didn't get to see any of the clients there or see how they work with the clients. The facility looked fine though.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

We've already got my mother-in-law in Aegis of Shadowridge and she has been there for almost two months. We chose this place because it is very clean -- it almost looks like a hotel more than an assisted living hospital. She has her own room; they have planned activities and really good food. They also have a nice little walking area and a really beautiful garden area with swings and things like that. They have activities every day; they have their own theater room, and once a month they will have the families come for a barbecue. They have concerts in their garden area, I mean, it is just beautiful. It is almost like a cruise ship on land. The people there are really nice; the nurses are really helpful; and the staff is great.

I visited this facility

Aegis Living at Shadowridge was willing to give me a sample of the place for respite care for a week. Everything was up to good standards. It was probably one of the most modern and newest places, but they were too business like. The people that run the place were pretty tight. The studio was the only one I saw and it was pretty clean, but they were a little small. Aegis felt to be a little more of a hospital environment.

This is a beautiful facility. The apartments are a good size. They will customize an apartment by connecting adjoining rooms, when possible. The staff is friendly and do an excellent job. They are warm and caring with residents, and find ways to make them feel at home and happy. For instance, they now keep my father's favorite ice cream in stock. The food is excellent. It is portion controlled, however they will serve additional food upon request. There are lots of recreational activities, and they will go and get residents to insure they are able to participate. They have bus rides weekly, which may be scenic tours, or destination rides to places of interest nearby. They encourage family and friends to participate, too. They have capable and caring nursing staff, who are quick to notify family of any health issues. There has been slightly higher management staff turnover, in the last year. However, all go to lengths to get to know residents and their families. Prices are somewhat high, however, overall, I would say it is worth it.

Long-term continuity of caring staff. Beautiful facility. Excellent food. I have told many people about how happy and confident I am with this facility and its care.

Friend or relative of resident

My Dad was diagnosed with dimentia and required 24 hour attention. My daughters and I toured several facilities before choosing Aegis at Shadowridge. We were given a tour of both the Assisted Living areas and the Memory Care areas, the later of which was where my Dad resided for seven months in 2008. Aegis is an expensive option, but provides a reasonable level of care. The facility is well decorated and the room size is adequate. The activities are somewhat repetitious, but the musical programs and entertainment events are very good. They host a "Summer Concert Series" which features live bands and dancing in their backyard garden setting. My Dad was a friendly, but fussy individual, and the staff was sometimes less than attentive to his needs, taking long periods of time to attend when called. My daughters and I visited him almost daily. The medical staff is very good, and the Director of the Memory Care Unit is a caring, intelligent woman. The food is also better than average. However, this facility is pricy, and other alternatives may be better on your budget. Add ons for the number of medications and level of care required can make it unaffordable. All in all, however, it is a good facility and residents seem comfortable and well cared for.
