I visited this facility

I went and looked at Eden Vista of Fon du Lac and the doorbell was ripped off the door and just a plastic holder was there. That's the doorbell you're supposed to ring to get into the place. I grabbed a hold of the door handle, then the alarm went off. The girl runs up and rushes the caregiver. She says, "Hurry up and get in here." Otherwise, the cops will get here or whatever. That was a red flag right there. The people get one shower a week. At nighttime, sometimes they have issues with staff. There was no ventilation in the rooms. All they had was a baseboard heater that looked like it had been there since the 80s. Their ceilings were low and started to crack. They try to make them look like an artistic thing covering up a leaky roof, a shoddy ceiling that's falling, and they're just patching it up with mud joint compound. The halls were air-conditioned, but the individual rooms did not have AC, so the only way you cool your room down in a hot summer was to leave your door open. This is memory care. People are wandering around. What if you're out eating your dinner and you want your room cool, you leave your door open, and these people can go in your room and take your stuff. They were serving them hamburgers and hotdogs. I was there at dinnertime when I took my tour and they were cooking in their kitchen and the kitchen looked like it needed to be updated. It was old. The whole building was sad.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband is doing OK at Eden Vista of Fon du Lac. He likes it, and that's what's important. It is doing all right. I go there every day and see him. He interacts with the staff OK. No nurses there. The staff is expected to clean, to cook, and to care for the residents. The food is OK, but it could be more homemade. They use a lot of prepared items, so it could be a little healthier type of food. My husband has a nice room. It has a half-bath with a toilet and sink and a closet. We ordered a hospital bed for him, and there's a bedstand and a dresser in his room. There is a lift up chair. It's nothing exceptional, it's just a room.

I visited this facility

It was a very positive tour experience. The people there were very warm and friendly. The staff looked like they were doing an excellent job of interacting with the residents. It is strictly memory care, so there aren't people that don't have memory issues interacting with people who have dementia. It seemed to be a better fit for my sister. There are only 20 rooms. They have three available right now, so it is a small community. It just seems very pleasant and it's residential. It's not in a busy part of town. We left there yesterday with a very positive feeling. The rooms were relatively small. They only have a half bath attached, but they have two rooms in which residents can shower and they help with that, which is good. The room itself is about 15x15. It has a decent-sized closet. They can provide furniture or you can provide your own, and I think we're going to provide furniture. It has a nice view. There are birdfeeders right outside her window, which she will love. The staff was excellent. We did not see a menu, but they have a kitchen there. They prepare all the meals there, from fresh food not shipped in things. We were there shortly after lunch, so people had already eaten. They have several rooms, large rooms that are set up almost like living rooms. One has a fireplace in it and actually an organ in it. Another room has a number of tables set up. They've got some puzzles that people are working on. There were people just sitting and visiting and doing some work with colored pencils. They had a lot of nice activities available that people could participate in if they chose to. They don't force anybody to do anything, but we're hoping that she will adapt and be a little more sociable when she's there. The dining area was small, but there were only 20 residents, so there are maybe four or five tables set up. They will serve meals in the room if that's what the resident wants. They don't force people to gather, which is good. I was impressed with the facility when we toured it, but I don't know what our experience will be like once we actually have her moved in. The staff during the tour was very, very nice. She's not there all the time. They have three facilities in the area and she spends time at each of them. They're going to be doing some remodeling, but they need some updating and things like that. They're working on it. They said they have new furniture ordered for the lounge area, and they're trying to replace the floors in various rooms.

My father has moved in. The people have been great. The administrator is great, and the staff has done a good job with him. He only has one bedroom because it's memory care. He's more with it than most of the people there. They usually would have people come in and play the piano. The facility is good.
