I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Nobody ever answers the phone! Especially at the nurses station! I can’t ever call my sister in law! Ridiculous!

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Wish I had taken a tour of the home before she was placed there. She had a caseworker with a local family service program and they placed her. When I visited for the first time, I found it to be an old and beat up nursing home, but the nurses seemed to be caring. What really angered me is when she was put under a hospice nurse who was supposed to give her one on one care bc of dementia and I gave instruction that I did not want her to be denied food and water but they did it anyway. I was told that it wasn’t the kind of hospice that did that. Came to see her for a compassionate visit the day before she died and she looked horrible, very skeletal, could barely swallow, dehydrated bc she had no fluids. Husband confronted the nurse and she was uncaring and making excuses for her not having fluids. We were there for an hour and a half and the nurses neglected her the entire time, except when we first got there. The activities director told me she wasn’t in as bad of shape as she looked and that she was still doing activities with them in her room. There was no way she could have been doing anything in her condition. Very unhappy and dissatisfied with this facility and would recommend that people look elsewhere for care for their loved ones.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My grandmother has been a resident of formerly Beacon Shores and now Citadel and I wouldn’t say that this facility is horrible...it is not 5 star but I am writing this review because of an incident that I encountered today. I have always popped in to see my grandmother and have always been able to walk in. Now that we are in the middle of a pandemic I understand that I cannot walk in but last month I was able to ring the bell and have them bring her around to the dinning area to see her through the glass. Today I came for a visit with my children and called so they can bring her around and I was told that she was ok and watching tv but she had on her “comfortable clothes”. I told them that I did not care what she had on I just wanted to see her. I was told that I had to make an appointment for me to see her. So now I am concerned that they are not caring for her like they should since no one can just pop in anymore. I am going to schedule an appointment but of all the 8 years that she has been at this facility I have never been denied a visit because she had on her “Comfortable Clothes” I expect her to be comfortable. If she was asleep or at her Pace program I could understand but not because she wasn’t dressed and why at 2 in the afternoon is she still not appropriately dressed???

Terrible, night staff refuses to do any services, Filthy rooms, trash under cabinets. Wouldn’t wish this place on a dog.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Our relative is a resident of The Citadel Virginia Beach, but we're not happy with it. This nursing home is probably towards the bottom of the list. The man who took it over said he knows it's bad and he's going to make some changes so we hope he'll really make changes. It's like a prison, it's dirty, it's just bad. There was not enough staff for the number of people that were there. I know that the Alzheimer's unit is for those mentally off, but it was like being in a mental institution and to me it was bad. They just have a couple of staff members for 25 residents, so they need more staff for one thing. I would recommend for others to check the place out first if they have made any changes. I have no experience with nursing homes before, so maybe they're all bad and I'm really appalled. The food wasn't horrible but it was wonderful. My sister-in-law called me the other day to say that the food has really improved. So maybe that's one of the changes they're going to make. They would give our relative a sandwich with nothing on it but a piece of meat with bread, no mayonnaise or anything. I wouldn't eat the food, and the place itself needs a lot of cleaning. They say they have activities and there's a board with activities like they're supposed to take the residents somewhere. But I was there for a week and I never saw them doing anything. They have nothing to stimulate the people were just sitting in their chairs or walking, and it was bad to me. They had a TV in each little sitting room but there was no sound and no control to change the channel, so they just have to watch whatever was put on TV.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I admitted a loved one to Beacon Shores approximately two weeks ago. I have been delighted with the care and the friendliness of the staff. I've been informed Right away if any changes or events happened with my loved one. I am delighted with the experience so far. I had my doubts because of other negative reviews. I think they've really turn things around.

I am a friend or relative of resident

I was appalled at the way my 87 year old cousin was cared for.. She was very upset because she had nothing to do & the nurses was not friendly. So, I took her around the facility to see where she was. The nurses at the station seemed unconcerned about the patient. She was left out in the hall way by herself just sitting there for hours when I visited . I asked her if she was ok, she stated the nurses paid no attention to her when she complained that she was having pain with her eye. The hall way was over crowded with people walking & standing with wheel chairs in the way. It was very hard to walk in the hall way. There was an Aide that spoke to me very rudely. I finally told the Aide that I was not going to talk to her with her rude attitude. I called the Head of the Nursing Home; she assured me that she would speak to the Aide that spoke to me so rudely. I checked on my cousin later; they stated that they would make sure she had the care that I thought was automatic. I learned that you have to check on your loved one on a regular schedule while in that Nursing Home. I am hoping that the establishment will consider that my cousin is human to, and do the right thing by her.

I visited this facility

My 86 year old dad stayed in beacon shores for 3 days which was three days too long. What a disgusting excuse for a rehab center or any type of care for that matter. I don't mind old and run down, but the nurses have attitudes and that doesn't work for me. NEVER SEND YOUR LOVED ONE HERE UNLESS YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THEM ANYMORE. And then I still wouldn't.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My grandfather was a former resident of this facility. During his stay there, I visited approximately 5 times. Each visit I was appalled by the conditions. The staff seemed unconcerned with the fact that there were often bodily fluids on the floors in the hall, the rank odor was overpowering, and often residents were left unattended when it was visibly apparent that they should not be wandering around without supervision. My grandfather ultimately was put in the middle of legal proceedings after a visit from an elementary school. While left unattended, two small children wandered into his room, and thinking they were his granddaughter, he started hugging them and did not let go until staff intervened. Because of this, complaints were filed and legal action was attempted to be taken against my grandfather. It could have easily been avoided had the staff been more vigilant and attentive to both the patients and the visitors.
