I've visited English Meadows Blacksburg Campus. It's the best that I've seen in terms of the activities that they do, the rooms, the staff, and the happiness of the residents. They have different games. And they have a separate area for that from the dinner and lunch area. They do field trips and things, and they were going to the mall when we were there. We toured the entire assisted living area, and the floor was clean, there was nothing around, and it wasn't dirty.

MY experience with English Meadows: I had an issue of concern and contacted the administrator and she would not return my call. This facility does not advocate for their clients. They did not inform family that in Virginia, side rails are considered a form of restraint. Therefore for an elderly person, this is a safety concern. They did address Virginia’s DNR laws. They did not ask if my mother had a living will and what her wishes were regarding end of life. Nor did they speak to the family about this. Family knew she had a living will and that she did not want CPR performed in case of cardiac arrest. Because of their disregard and lack of communication, CPR was performed on my mother.

My mom is a resident of English Meadows Blacksburg Campus. In general, we are happy with her there because she is happy. There have been some issues. She had two hospital stays this year because she has a little issue with her heart. They will not let her come back with a heart monitor and we were dissatisfied with that because she might have needed that, turns out she did not, but we learn a lot about that community that we did not know before. But mother loves it there; she is comfortable there, she knows a lot of people there, and she does not want to move again. It was an issue though. In general, we are happy as long as mama is happy and welcome there. But if she has one little thing, she will have to go somewhere else. We started looking for another place after this first hospital because we thought we would need to move her but after the second hospital stay, they took her back and it worked out fine. They did hear from me, I complained quite a bit about that. She is more of a special lady out there now since they know her daughters' going to watch after her and her and make sure her needs are taken care of. I do have the option of going to the other side if she could not take care of herself, it is more expensive, but the care does not change. They only have two nurses for the whole living center, and so it does not matter whether she is on one side or the other. They only have 2 nurses, one day and one night. It is a beautiful building and fairly new but if I have a problem with the medicine, I have to talk to whoever's on-call, and sometimes they don't get it right, then I am making three or four calls.

My friend moved into here. It's a relatively new facility and it's really in very good condition. The layout is very serviceable so I don't have problems with that. The people I've dealt with have been most accommodating. My friend is very happy with the food and the dining area is clean, light, and airy. I have had one meal with her and the staff is very attentive to what we want. They tried to find something to suit my friend's requests for food. They have an arts and crafts person who comes on a regular basis, and there are some pictures on the wall which are of the crafty variety that they've made in this class. They also have beading and Bingo. They also have planned activities like lunch and yesterday, and they previously had an Elvis impersonator. It's also competitively priced with other senior living places in the area.

I visited and the place is very good and brand new. Everything was excellent. The staff was very professional. Their accommodations were probably the best in the area. Everything was very neat, clean, and modern.

We moved mom in. They seemed to offer the level of care that we needed, and it was affordable; that is why we chose this place. The facility is brand new, clean, and fresh. The room was very nice. The staff seemed wonderful. They really engage with their residents, and the food seemed to be really good as well.

It is brand new, very pretty, and nice. My husband is in the memory care unit. Each person has their own bedroom with an entryway and a bathroom. You can have a private room, but I did not want a situation where there were two men in 1 room. The staff all seemed extremely nice and very interested in what they were doing. All the staff members -- whether they were aides or kitchen staff or front desk -- were all very open, friendly, and good with the residents. My husband seems very happy with the food. They have exercise class in the morning, and they offer occupational therapy and physical therapy. They have a room where they congregate and could be described as a great room or a community room. It has very nice set of couches and chairs, and that room is also where the memory care residents eat. It's very nice and attractive. There is a fenced in outside area where you can go out and walk around or sit outside, and the residents will not be able to exit. They can't go outside. The doors have keypads, so you can't get in or out of the unit without one of the staff using the keypad.
