We toured The Campus of the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. We only met with one person, but the receptionist when you came in was very, very nice. We had to sign in and take our temperature, and then sign two books: one for our temperature, and one for just visiting the place. We met with the admissions director and she also was very lovely. When we left, we didn't have to take our temperature, but we had to sign out. The facility is beautiful. I mean, the grounds are well kept and landscaped very nicely. My mother-in-law is going to get a private room, but most of the rooms are semi-private. So we looked at a room. We didn't have a chance to get into the single room, but we're going to go back there after we finish some paperwork. My grandmother was there for almost five years. We like the location. It's not far from us at all.

The Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg looked nice when you walked in, but it did not have any of the amenities like the others have. It had an old dining area where you're welcome to come eat and visit. The hallways were kind of thin and there were so many people sitting out and it reminded you of those old nursing homes where you see just older people sitting in wheelchairs with blankets on their legs. The staff took me to the room where my mother would be, and everything seemed so old. I wasn't interested in that. It was depressing to me.

The Jewish Home is beautiful upon entering. Have a kosher café for visitors and staff. No smell of urine. Main dining room is gorgeous and reminds of a fine dining experience. Staff were friendly and helpful in all departments. Music at 3 PM on Sundays is the best! The residents came alive with the interaction! Beautiful outdoor grounds to visit with residents. Staff were accommodating to our visiting schedule.

Care will never be found that is better. The CNAs help my Mom without hesitation. The drivers ALWAYS make her feel at home and support her on trips to appointments. The nurses are more than fine, but the CNAs go out of their way to help her; care for her and make sure she feels safe. I am very grateful to them for their care; allows me to know she is okay when I cannot take care of her.

My dad was in Jewish Home for rehab. It's a very nice place with activities. The staff was really good and took very good care of him. He was in a single room of decent size.

We should have known we were in trouble when, on our first day there, signing papers, the social worker "warned" us that our insurance company was notorious for cutting rehab coverage quickly. Really? Insurance does not cut without a recommendation from the facility, so please keep that in mind. Our loved one received less than adequate care during his stay there. Teeth were never brushed. CPAP machine was never used, despite our pleas to nursing staff and management. Our loved one was rarely, if ever, shaved, unless we did it. Who knows how often our loved one was bathed. When our loved one first arrived at the Jewish Home, he had some cognitive ability to communicate the shortcomings of the care he was receiving there. But, through a very unfortunate series of events, mainly caused by their lack of attention and lack of proactive care, it got to the point where he lost most of his cognitive functions and could no longer communicate such failures. Toileting is a big issue here. The Jewish Home is very unattentive when it comes to answering the call bells of loved ones. He would sit, for over 30 minutes while we were there staring down the nursing staff to come and help us (please!?). Can you imagine how long they sit when you are not present???? Our loved one was forced to become incontinent because of their lack of attention to his needs. And when I say needs, how about letting a UTI go untreated for over 8 weeks? We requested testing, and were told results were negative, but finally at week 8 of our loved ones stay, we were informed that he did in fact have a UTI (as we knew all along), and he finally received treatment. But that was only after we insisted that he be seen by a urologist that they decided they could do the proper testing required. If you do not have an understanding of how a UTI affects dementia in the elderly, you need to research this. When insurance was finally cut (after 5 appeals and many breaks in therapy because of the cuts and the way the appeal process works), our "caseworker", who is also the admissions director for their skilled care unit, made no attempt whatsoever to help us get our loved one out of that place. Is this not a conflict of interest (caseworker/admissions director)? Of course his only goal from the very first day of our stay, was to have our loved one overmedicated and sleeping almost every minute of every day for the rest of his life, rotting there in his wheelchair until he dies. There was no real attempt to rehab our loved one back to a state where he could function in an assisted living or personal care environment. Actually, 24 hours after being removed, our loved one has been admitted to the hospital due to over medication, and reactions from combinations of drugs he never should have been administered to begin with. Our recommendation to you is to avoid this rehab/skilled care facility at all costs.

Jewish Home was a beautiful facility. The staff was welcoming. It looked like it was highly secured. However, the price was very expensive.

My mom is in a residence at Jewish Home. The staff, the director, the CNAs and the dietary people are excellent. They take good care of my mom. Even the transport people are good to her. However, it's just the management that's not very well. At first, mom is in the skilled unit and they have charge her for things she didn't use like oxygen and there is a month when they overcharge her with $86. Then, on her first day of transition to the residence, there was no light, no telephone and no TV in her room. They told me that they are going to fix it, but they didn't. My mom tries to call me but the phone does not even have a cord attached to the socket. She's in a wheelchair and she was left all night without light. Nonethelss, everything is okay now.

Nursing care is generally good but common hygiene for residents is lacking. Wait time much too long for assistance from aids. Washing of hands after using the toilet not done, brushing of teeth and cleaning of dentures rarely done. Management will listen to complaints and say the right things but no follow through. Very frustrating to deal with.

The facility and grounds are fairly nice. It is usually pretty clean when I go to visit my grandfather. The staff on the other hand is terrible. I usually have to wait until later in the evenng to go visit because I cannot stand Delores. She smells like an ashtray and never answers my questions. I have filed many complaints about her but obviously the management doesn't care. My advice is visit during the evening.
