We were very happy with the care my mother-in-law got at Oatfield in her last three years. She needed something comprehensible and not overwhelming and the small house setting (12 apartments per house with individual staff for each house) was perfect. We really loved the fact that she did not have to move as her needs increased. The staff simply increased the care they were giving and she stayed in her comfortable apartment. Of course the cost increased as well, but we knew this going in, so no surprises. The staff were caring dedicated people and gave her the best possible situation right up to the end. And the food was surprisingly good for this type of facility. Left us with a good feeling!

- Special Comment: The location is about as stunning as you can imagine. Oatfield Estates is situated on a hilltop with 360 views of Oregon, including one of the most gorgeous views of Mount Hood. You’ll also be surrounded by a beautiful arboretum, populated with all native plants. Another reason residents and families love Oatfield’s location in Milwaukie is because it is tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood. We used to like this place a lot. Lately it feels like the quality of care is gradually just slipping further and further. Management is defensive about feedback. Turnover feels very high. Feels like everyone is just there to collect a paycheck and nothing more. It’s a shame because it’s a beautiful space and has a lot of potential.

I toured Elite Care at Oatfield Estates for my mom. The room was very small and the facility itself was small. There weren't a lot of activities. The staff was very friendly. It's an older facility than some of the ones I've seen. The person who gave me the tour was nice. I saw the dining area, but I didn't have any of the food there. It was adequate for a smaller facility. The maintenance and upkeep weren't great, it was an older facility that needed some maintenance. There was a nice deck that looks out over the city, it was kind of an outdoor patio. They also had like a living room inside where you can look out over the city and the hillside, so that was a nice feature.

My father was at Helen's House, Oatfield Estates for over two years. He had Alzheimers and loved to walk so this was the perfect place. He walked the large secure property freely, went to neighboring homes on the property for different activities, walked the garden area picking berries and loved all the off-campus outings. The staff at Helen's House is excellent and dad loved the home cooked meals and spacious apartments.

If you are looking for a place for your loved one, look somewhere else. Please be sure to do your due diligence, this place is severely lacking in quality care. Residents left laying in their urine, completely soaked from shoulders to knees. No privacy for your loved one, residents will wander into other apartments. It claims to be assisted living, but it truely is a memory care facility. Staff talk about other residents in common areas where everyone can hear it. Bringing concerns to management does nothing. Every house has their own activity director, yet there are only 2-3 activities happening during the day. They plant the residents in front of the TV for most of the day.

I like the family atmosphere of Elite Care at Oatfields Estate. They have a garden outside, a really cool chicken coop, and I like that they have a fish pond. I also like how they have different quarters and not everything in just one building, it's like an actual community, and an actual home. When I walked in it kind of felt a little bit depressing. The vacant rooms I saw have OK space and has the feeling of reality, while other places polish up and actually have what they call show rooms. The staff that I met was very relaxed and friendly. I walked into the kitchen when they were preparing lunch, and each house had their own chef.

The rooms at Elite Care at Oatfield Estates were roomier than any place I saw. There was more than one room with very ample space. The dining area was very homey and comfortable. The people were caring and involved with the residents in a gracious way.

We ended up at Oatfield Estates, and we’re happy with it. For the most part, they’re just professional. We’re having some management issues right now, but overall I’d give it a four out of five. The rooms are very clean, very spacious, and well-designed. The food is delicious, it’s a very clean, and very well-managed dining room. They have activity directors for each of the building. They play bingo, they have poetry, and they do outings. There’s always something going on. They need to improve on communication from the management to the people in-charge of the elders’ care.

My father has been at Elite Care for quite a month yet, and he is enjoying the staff. The rooms are very nice and spacious. My father loves the food. They have a chef there, and they cook everything from scratch. Their dining room is excellent and is just like a home. The residents are quite busy. They are on walks or going to different activities in the different housing facilities. It is the perfect place for my father.

Very lovely setting, but feel they can easily nickle and dime you. Went in telling them what our budget was and after 30 days are already over $1500.00 over. They knew what our budget was and continued to assure us that was within their charges...we are now at $7000.00 with little assistance required. Positive note - love all the staff and surroundings....very peaceful

This facility's location in Milwaukie is in a residential area on a hill, surrounded by 6.5 acres of land. Oatfield Estates, like its sister facility in Tigard called Fanno Creek, has an interesting story. The owners were quite the darlings of the person-center care movement, which was strong in Oregon about five years ago. The couple"”Bill Reed and Lydia Lundberg, were looking to find a place for a parent, so they built their own facility"”with the goal of creating the kind of place they would like to live in themselves. They also created a technology that would allow family members to get updates and status reports online from anywhere in the country, even checking their whereabouts and activities and vital signs. As part of this electronic monitoring, a bell is activated when a resident tries to leave or rings a call button"”and there's also a record of how people responded and how long it took. Actually, very few people do it, but it does give some people peace of mind. The owners are also very interested in green and sustainable; all the facilities are LEED-certified. Another innovative idea was to have multi-generational mix, so some caregiver apartments were allowed at first. But that idea didn't last. The care concept is like roquefort dressing: people love it or hate it; there is no in between. The ones who are unhappy with the care feel that the staff isn't adequately trained in memory care, that the facility is understaffed and not well maintained. The idea was to give a high level of attention to people with memory care issues and improve the quality of their lives to extend them. But the facility is not licensed as memory care facility"”only as a residential care facility, which means it doesn't need to comply with some of the more stringent staffing and building safety requirements. Oatfield Estates was Reed and Lundberg's first facility. The campus is open, which is a concern for some residents with memory issues; it is patrolled by a sprinkler system. The housing is in dormlike apartments"”15 residents to each house in 5 houses. The model is that people should spend as much time together as possible, so the living quarters are small"”and the common areas are large. They do a good job is encouraging people to socialize. They also do a fairly good job with activities and helping residents stay engaged. And there is a high quality of food served"”mostly organic. The dining rooms have large communal tables, and residents are encouraged to help prepare meals together. I've witnessed loving interactions between residents and caregivers, but some family members complain that the management doesn't truly listen to concerns they raise. There is little turnover with care staff, but higher level management tends to change hands. Some family members also feel that the general understanding of dementia is not where it should be"”and not all staff is adequately trained in memory care. The cost is very high for a residential care facility"”beginning at $6,000 monthly. which is about $2,000 more than comparable places.

My grandfather was a resident of this facility and I have nothing but praise for both the facility and the staff. This is not a typical assisted living facility, as it has many unique amenities and features that make it both a fun and interesting place. It is located on almost 7 acres of land at the top of a hill with beautiful views of Mt. Hood. The grounds are full of accessible paths and resident run gardens that are very pleasant. Gardening activities are core to many of the resident's experiences, my grandfather loved to be out working in the garden at every opportunity. The living spaces for residents are divided into houses, each with its own family style kitchen and chef, as well as common area. The food is of very good quality (much of it is grown on site by residents or bought locally). Family members of residents are invited to a communal meal once a month on family night. Most resident rooms are apartment style with one large room with a partition for bedroom and living space, and a bathroom. The staff are very open and friendly and communicate well with both residents and family members. Residents are treated with a great deal of respect and there is a sense of community among both the staff and residents of each house. This facility is truly a pioneer in eldercare and I can easily recommend it to anybody.
