Placing my mother and father in a care facility was challenging to say the least. But the facilities, staff, and activities at Shawnee Estates helped both my parents settle in rather quickly. I have personally watched nurses and other staff work with residents and resolve potentially bigger problems in just a couple of minutes with suggestions or actions for each individual situation. I would recommend taking a close look at Shawnee Estates in Xenia, Ohio if you are considering assisted living or memory care for your loved one.

Shawnee Estates Senior Living was clean and well-kept, but their largest unit was just too small for two people. The layout of the building was fine. They had a workout area and a physical therapy area. The director assisted us with the tour, and he was friendly and caring. The facility was way too small and it did not meet our needs at all.

Shawnee Estates Senior Living was much less staffed than any of the places we have seen, and they didn't have a whole lot of residents at that time. The upkeep was subpar compared to any other facility we have seen. There were things like a broken door on the cabinet in the dining area. These were things that have been existing for quite a while and have never been addressed. There was no one there, but you can tell somebody had been doing some drywall patching, and sanding and dust were all over the floor. I don't know if anybody has allergies, but there are people in there with oxygen on. Dust like that in the air should be controlled. I would not choose that place. They had very minimal staff. We saw somebody cleaning a room for the guy who was patching walls a little later on and we saw a couple of nurses in the dining area. That's really about all we saw other than the gentleman giving us a tour, and they seemed OK. They go out on certain nights to a nearby restaurant and they go eat and let the residents pick. They had some things they did that were nice. There was a Dollar General right out front of their building. They go over there and let them shop quite often just so they can get out.

What I really like about Shawnee Estates Senior Living is that the location is the closest to where we live. They had one room set up and decorated with a bed, a bedside stand, and a chair, so you could get the idea of how big the room was with furniture, so that was nice. I thought they did a good job in explaining the facility and showing us around, and the details. The staff member that showed us around was informative and did a good job explaining the facility. I didn't feel like the upkeep of the facility was very good at all. We also saw a courtyard there.

My husband is in the memory care unit. There are no activities for the patients there. They feed them, they have their own rooms, they have a TV and chairs in the common area, and they also have a secure outdoor area where you can go outside and sit. In the assisted living unit, they have people come and play music, Bingo, and certain different things for the residents. The food is excellent.

We really liked it. It was clean, the rooms were nice, and it looked like they had a lot of activities for the residents. In front of the complex, they had built a Dollar General which I think would be handy for the people to walk down the store and get things. The director -- Derek -- was very knowledgeable and thorough. He showed us rooms, gave us a very detailed tour, and let us know about payment options. We were overall impressed with everything. It's not a huge facility.

It is about five minutes from my house. I like that they have table cloths on the dining tables and have a fairly sizable menu every night. They always have at least two or sometimes three specials or extra choices, so it almost feels like dining out. The room that Mom has is like her old suite and looks and feels more like an apartment than an institutional place. We were also able to get my father-in law his own room in the last couple of weeks. He is so excited to have his own space and to not have to share a room. The staff was especially good at answering all of my questions. I’ve been very pleased.

They called us when we were looking for a place. We visited there and the place was clean. It was a pleasant visit. I found it to be a very adequate place for Alzheimer's. I saw the rooms and they were spacious. I was impressed with the cleanliness and the friendliness of the staff.

Before my Aunt and Uncle moved in an apartment in this very, very small community and that was the only assisted living they had in the area, but everybody knows everybody. But now, they have hospital beds in there. They both are in one room, it has a television and it is more like a hospital room. But it has been a wonderful transition since they walked in the door and we're going on five years. The food is okay. The staff is fantastic. The nurse that my aunt and uncle have, they will call me at any given time just to update me on anything. The hospice is involved. So, the hospice is in there every day. The hospice calls me also. So, even though I live in another state, I always know what is going on. They make sure that I have updates on anything that goes on.

I visited my dad once. It's an assisted-living facility with a memory-care unit inside. Dad is in assisted living and they had his door marked so he could clearly see where he's supposed to be. The staff seemed knowledgeable. They put us in a dining room and we just were able to eat and visit my dad. The food was fine. I also saw that they had some activities going on in the great room.
