My husband moved to Brookdale Mount Vernon. The director there reached out to me. When she learned about my husband having dementia, she sent me a book on the subject of dementia, and it kind of impressed me, nobody else did that. I haven't worked with the staff very long, but so far it's been good. They're all friendly and willing to help. I'm impressed with what's on the menu. They do have an outdoor space. I think there are activities, I know they have like a big screen TV for them to gather in like a little living area section. They do have a kind of nice kitchen in that section with tables or dining, I like that. It's not big and it's not too small.

My mom has moved into Brookdale Mount Vernon. It's going pretty well. I go there about every day. She has been very well taken care of. She is socializing. And the food is very good. She likes it. It's very clean. One thing I like about it is the fact that they have one nurse's aide for every 8 to 10 residents, and most places have one nurse's aide for every 20 to 25 residents. The staff at Brookdale are hard workers. They take care of my mom very well. The building is nice, too. The rooms are large. My mom doesn't have a roommate. She is on her own, and the room is very clean. She has a big bathroom, a sink, a refrigerator and cupboards. It's plenty of space. For activities, they offer games. Sometimes the activities director asks questions, and they try to answer them. They play bingo. They have different activities every day. I talked to a lot of the residents there and socialized quite a bit. The nurses are busy and trying to take care of them. It's nice; it's peaceful.

My tour at Brookdale Mount Vernon was good. It was very nice. The residents there seemed more able to get around than the ones that were at the other place. They were up and down the halls and walking and so on. The room was small and clean. They showed us the vacant one. It had no furniture or anything in it, and you had to take your own in. I thought it was very well set up and everything. One thing that I was pretty well dismayed at was, they started a base rate, which was okay, but then if they have to administer any medicines at all, it's $900 more per month, and to me, that was pretty exorbitant. The price turned me off. It's a lot closer to my home but the price was out of our range. The staff who took me around was very nice. She was good. They were very proactive in gardening and just doing stuff out in the outdoors part of it. I like that very much. They have a pretty sizable courtyard. They had flowerpots and raised beds and they planted stuff, and I liked that part about it because my husband is a gardener, and he would like that. Their price is the only thing that probably would keep me from it. I just couldn't afford that.

We visited Brookdale Mount Vernon. They offer assisted living and memory care. It was very bright. The residents were interacting with one another at some sort of a happy hour. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. We got to speak to the manager. The staff were all very, very accommodating and answered all our questions. We didn't look at assisted living because we determined that my father would probably need memory care. The rooms were nice and pretty spacious. We did not see one that was set up, but they just opened an empty one for us. It wasn't as nice in the memory care. It wasn't as pleasant of an experience just because of the level of care that people needed there. It had a little bit of an odor. It didn't bother us so much because we know that the level of care there would have been comparatively more. We looked at their menu, and we were pretty impressed with all they had to offer, so it sounded good. The staff went above and beyond even afterward. I got several calls from one of them. They were just very, very helpful. However, we weren't as impressed in the memory care section. It was not quite as nice as the other area of the home.

The staff at Brookdale Mount Vernon was very nice and very helpful. We took a tour of the place to get an idea of what to expect. If we could've financed it, Mom probably would've been OK going there. It was nice and simple. They seemed to have quite a few things for the residents. The facilities all looked well kept, and maybe a little dated in the rooms, but nothing bad. I didn't see anything that would prevent me from putting my mother in there. The staff member was very helpful and very understanding of our situation. She gave us some other contacts and places to go for information, so she was extremely helpful. We never had a chance to look at the food. We went on a weekend, so there was not a lot going on. She described the activities, but we never saw anybody participating in anything. They had games, they had a fitness program, they had book club, and bingo night. They had a lot of a lot of things that they could do. We looked at three rooms, and they were all basically the same. They just differed a little bit as far as the type of shower, and one room had an interconnecting door to it, but they were basically the same room. It looked like a nice place. The staff was friendly. They were saying hi to us and different things, and Sue was extremely helpful as far as understanding the situation and trying to help us with additional information.

We visited Brookdale, and the staff seemed nice. They were generally nice, attentive, the place was clean, and in good repair for the most part. The grounds were acceptable, and it was winter time when I saw it. I did not select it. It's like in a nursing home, and the people are parked in wheelchairs just sleeping or staring at you.

Brookdale Mount Vernon is very nice, and both my parents are living there now. Everything's fine. The food's good. I am satisfied. People are friendly and nice. The grounds are pretty. Tonight, they are having a bluegrass jamboree. Sometimes, during the afternoons, they play penny bingo and nickel bingo. They also have art classes and gardening. It's very nice.

I liked Brookdale Mount Vernon (formerly Emeritus at HillenVale). The staff was very nice. We met a few of the residents who were very nice, too. They had a lot of activities. They had car rides once or twice a month going to different places, which my mother also liked. It was cheery and well lit, and the food was better than where she lives now. It was a very nice place.

Emeritus was my first choice to take my mother for professional care. Walking in I felt right at home as residents said 'hello" and smiled. I new this was the right home for my mother. The staff always got back to me if I had any questions or concerns. Being that I was 2 hours away this was of great comfort. As the acting parent now of my parent it was a feeling that I still can not put into words. Mother has passed recently, but I know she was carried for far beyond my abilities. Kim, Tony and Denise was my life line with mom. I can not say enough for all that they did for me and my mother. I was told it was time for hospice with love and gentleness. The entire staff and hospice worked in unison to provide my mother's care with dignity and gentleness. With the two teams of care givers I felt as if a huge load had been lifted from my shoulders. I was not alone.

Emeritus was very pretty and very nice. They didn't have any open, and all the apartments were occupied. So they had to ask a resident to allow us to see an apartment. I found it reasonable. But they were a little more formal. It was crystal, linen, and lace. It just wouldn't suit my parents.

Emeritus is 35-40 miles away from my residence and I didn't want to travel that far. However, this facility is very good. Their environment is very nice. The staff is very nice and informative. They have activities for their occupants. I would recommend this facility. This was my number 2 choice for my mother.
