Courageous Sister

I had the opportunity to visit this facility many times during the years my sister lived there. In the beginning it was like family. The staff was amazing and they cared deeply for my sister and the other residents. Then after Bryn Mawr was sold and taken over by the current owner I noticed a sharp decline in the cleanliness and quality of care, and many of the beloved caregivers had left. During one of my first visits after the facility changed hands my sister had an accident in the hall, but no one cleaned it up. The next day when I returned the same dried urine was still there. And the next day, too. This is just one of many examples of the dreadful conditions I witnessed inside Bryn Mawr after that. It was never like this before. In the past my sister and everyone was cared for with dignity and love. Amid lots of empty promises about all the great improvements they were going to make under the new ownership such as remodeling and upgrades, reorganization and new this and new that, nothing was done and the place just got worse every year. Not only had the aging building become more run-down, the stench got so bad it made my eyes water. Because we did not want to move our sister after living there for years, I spoke up and tried to make a difference. I asked for regular cleaning and for some of the improvements that were promised and that would have made my sister's situation there tenable. Many of the staff were receptive and did what they could. However the upper management was not receptive or amiable after that. It was a sad day when Bryn Mawr was sold because the new owners did not provide the consistency of caring, and the stability our sister needed from her long-term care, and that our family appreciated for so many years.

I don't even know where to start. I was sent to this facility for transitional care after a surgery. I lasted about 3 hours before I decided to take my chances and checked out. It was noticeably filthy, and run down. they served a well balanced dinner, although the soup was that of a refrigerator temperature. I have never been aware of a healthcare facility with indoor/outdoor smoking areas...but, ok, I smoke...so I did venture out with an RN who was also using this amenity. the grounds and garden area were filled with cigarette butts. People were yelling, screaming...one even singing at the top of their lungs. It did not seem to be a place anyone would go for a recovering period. when asked the specialty of this facility, all they could tell me was that each employee was a registered nurse. Use care when deciding a facility. When I approached the hospital that referred me, the social worker advised that they don't visit places prior to sending a patient for care. this was the only one insurance covered...between the mold and scuzz....overloaded outlets, taped windows and dust stuffed vents, I need to question the MDHS for allowing this to be called a health facility or worse yet, allow them to bill insurance as a health care provider....no stars here....unless it could berated as substandard.

Bryn Mawr Health Care is fine, but it's just too far for me to drive. I would like to get my sister closer to where I live, because I have to take her to the doctor to downtown Minneapolis and things like that. I'm 50 miles away from her. She's been in there since December and she's being treated very good. The staff seems to be knowledgeable, very caring to whatever she needs. It's very clean. They have a lot of things going on, they take them places, and they do a lot of things in the facility itself. So she has a lot to do, if she wants to do it. She's not forced and it's up to her. She's never really complained about anything. It's a fairly nice area, but it's just so far from me.
