I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom is a resident of American House Milford. The experience has been very good. She has a washer and dryer in her apartment, which makes her very happy. She had a leaky faucet, and they were there the next day. Then the dryer wasn't quite drying, and then she made a point of telling them, and they came, and they fixed that. There haven't been any other repair issues there. The apartment is cleaned once a week by the staff. Four girls come in to clean it. They pick up her garbage twice a week. All of my mom's meals are covered. She is happy there. She is 92, and it has been a good experience. It's quiet. She hasn't gone out really and made friends yet, but the staff is very nice. We've had no issues at all. She got a standard one-bedroom. They have the one- and the two-bedroom and then they have the one-bedroom that's expanded. She is living independently. There are things that I can pay more for if she needs help. I think she can segway into assisted living without having to move from her apartment. There's an exercise room. There's also a theater room where they show things. There are quite a few activities. They have an exercise like chair yoga and what they call walk-about. They have a garage that's underneath the building. If the person drives a car, then the snow doesn't get on it, which I thought was wonderful. They just cleaned the whole parking garage. My mom also has a balcony. Most apartments have a balcony. Hers faces east, which she is really happy about. She can sit out there in the morning, and she can sit out there in the afternoon. She has some shade out there. They have a common dining room where everybody comes. There are two lunchtimes in the morning. The breakfast is continental. In this one common area, they have coffee all the time, and then there are some wrapped fruits like apples and bananas. They have a whole board right by where the dining room is that tells you what the activities are every day, and they have quite a bit going on. When I went in to visit, the guys were playing cornhole right there in the lobby. I thought it was funny. It seems like a friendly community and the people seem to get along. They keep the place and the people are friendly. My mom said the food that she has gotten has been delicious. She likes it. The building is about 20 years old, so it's starting to show a little bit of wear. They are working on getting things cleaned up. They're working on that, and I think they do a nice job. The value for money is probably comparable. It's about $1100 more than what my mom used to pay, but she gets more services than she got from the other place. Mom also planned for her retirement, so she can afford this. She is doing fine with the value for money.

I visited this facility

We will be moving into American House Milford. I'm giving care for my ex-wife because she is an Alzheimer's patient. I'm independent, but she is not. They're really friendly, very outgoing, and very accommodating so far in the little contact I've had. The reason I selected them is because of the facility itself and the location. It's close to my son, daughter, and family who are going to be able to help if I need it. I like the place. They seem friendly, and they have facilities that I will be happy with; I'm sure. The apartments seemed very nice. There's enough square footage. I haven't been to the actual place I'm going to move into, but I've seen a virtual tour of it. I'm good with it. It will certainly be adequate, I'm sure. The facilities are good. They provide meals and extra services as needed, like laundry and so forth. It will take a little load off of what I'm doing right now. I only saw the dining area briefly, but it looked very nice, very friendly looking and adequate. They provide three meals a day. The dining room looks very nice, and I think they're working on enlarging it. They provide tours and trips outside to different locations: shopping centers, theater, and so forth. They have in-house activities like bingo, cards, and other activities that I'm not really aware of at this time because I haven't been there to see them; that's what their description of the facilities tells me.

Provider Response

John, thank you for your positive feedback and for taking the time to post this review.

I visited this facility

I toured American House Milford. The presence of it, it looked older, it was dirty, and it smelled. I didn't like it at all, so I didn't stay that long. The staff was good. They were very informative, they were cordial to me, and they answered my questions. I just didn't care for the building and all. But the biggest thing is when you walk in, and you smell things that don't smell right, that's your first impression, and that was my first impression of this place. It smelled like a nursing home from what I remember 40 years ago when my grandfather was in one. The location was practical for my siblings, that's why we checked it out. The grounds on the outside look beautiful, but once you go inside, it's a whole different story.

Provider Response

Deb, thank you for your feedback. It's always our hope our residents and guests have a pleasant experience with us. When they don't, we want to hear about it. Feel free to reach out to our Vice President of Operations, Marina to discuss any concerns you may have. We value your feedback and look forward to hearing from you.

We toured American House Milford. This place needs renovation, but they were perfectly nice. The staff was a nice young woman, trying her best to earn our business. She was trying to win the business, but it's just a place that needs serious updating. It is so outdated. The restaurant was also working, but the apartment was really bad. It's just so unappealing. They got to go in there and spend some money. They have three meals a day. They have activities and shuttle busses. They clean the apartment; I don't know how often. They do have caretakers that you can hire for extra. It's got everything, but it's for low-end income, I think. I like their location. I think it's beautiful and right next to downtown Milford. I was excited about it because I live in Highland, which is just 10 minutes down the road. I was thought it's perfect location and beautiful setting, right next to a very quaint city. I thought this is going to be great, until I saw it. I was very disappointed. It's just run down.

We toured American House Milford for my mother, and it was very nice. The rooms had a good layout. They were very clean and well taken care of. The interior is laid out nice, it's updated. It's clean, and the apartments are well decorated. It's got a lot of tree lines, and it's convenient for probers not far from where I live.

Provider Response

Laurie, thank you so much for your 5-star review!

I went to American House Milford and it showed good potential. It was clean and I was impressed with the large double room. The staff was friendly and helpful. The facility was nice and clean, and they kept the lawn well. They had a small gym, and the dining area was neat. It's just off of the main highway.

My mom stayed at American House Milford for rehab. It was very good. She had a room there and she was only there for a little bit. I remembered they seemed understaffed to me. If she needs something it would take a while. It just seemed like they had too many patients for one person; they were overwhelmed. They seemed very clean. I remembered one time I sat down with a table full of people and they were making some kind of a pie and they were cutting up apples and doing stuff like crafts. They always had events planned and they were keeping people active and they encouraged people that came in there to participate. She had to have a surgery because her break was so bad, and they could not set it and her wrist was so weak, so they had to rehab her and provide physical therapy. My mom was happy there.

Provider Response

Carol, thanks so much for your feedback. We are happy to hear about your mother's experience at American House.

I saw American House. I wasn't that impressed with it. It was nice. It had amenities that were suitable. The staff members were good. The main issue I had is that you don't get a choice whether to eat in the common area or not. They tried to make you eat three times a day in the common area, but I have PTSD and an eating disorder, so I'm very nervous about that. Everything else was good, but that would be a no-go for me. Activities were awfully good. They had a lot of crafting things, a craft room, and an exercise area. Everything else was fairly good, but because of the food situation, I would give this community a 2 because it is not suitable for me.

American House is the one I’m going to, and it seems perfect for me. It seems very friendly. There were a group of people sitting outside in the sunshine and talking, and you could see people playing cards. It just seemed very active. The one I looked at was a 2-bedroom apartment, and it was completely empty as someone was ready to move in; they are polishing the floors. There’s a little refrigerator and a stove in the apartment. It’s very close to where my daughter lives.

I thought American House Milford was great. It was a beautiful place. I saw one apartment, and it was really nice. It was more than adequate. They had arts and crafts and movie nights. They also had a library and a pool table.

We saw American House Milford, and it was very expensive. They were very nice, and the place itself was gorgeous. I wouldn't mind staying there at all. It has a lot of activities, and it had everything I would want, but it is expensive. I have seen the room, and everything is beautiful. I love it, and if I could afford it, I would be there.

I thought American House was too dark and depressing. We didn't like the apartments. We found it to be very depressing and dark. It is very low lit, and it has dark carpets. The walls were gloomy; it was just dark, and we didn't like it. We didn't bother eating there because we didn't care for the place. We were just in there to walk around and take the tour, but we didn't care for it. We really thought it was nice that they had a heated parking garage below. That was kind of a unique feature for the elderly. They had some really nice features, but we didn't care for the atmosphere. It sounded like everything was nice, and people seemed to be happy there. But my sister and I like brighter things, more open, and not so tightly closed in. The person who took us on the tour was nice, and the tour was great. Everything was great. We just didn't like the building. It offered a lot; it's just our preference.

Provider Response

Thanks for leaving your feedback! It’s understandable that tastes may vary when it comes to decor. We do have several other American House communities in the area that perhaps may be more your style. If you’d like to give me a call, I’d be happy to help guide you to the best community for you!

American House is right by my brother's house, that's how we came about this facility. I don't like it because it's an old building. We did go into a couple of rooms and they were okay, clean and nice; however, they were expensive. The tour guide was wonderful, but we never saw one resident. I like to talk to the residents and ask about the facility, but there was never one person anywhere. At the independent side, they were having an open house, so that one was way happier except the people who were sitting in a room were kind of sad. I talked to a few of them and they just said, "It's all okay. It's not home." What I didn't like about this facility, with my mom's dementia and if she was going to do the wandering thing, they just said that their residents could just wander around at night. I guess there was enough supervision. For activities, they did have a nice calendar of stuff.

Provider Response

You may have caught us on a day where many of our residents were out enjoying one of our activities or events! I'd like for you to stop by my office or call me personally and so we can discuss your concerns. Some of our residents do go through an adjustment period, as change does take some getting used to - particularly if they've left a lifetime home. We have American Houses around the area who can accommodate residents with dementia - give me a call if you're still looking and I can make a recommendation on the best place for your mother.

Sincerely, Paula Tatum Executive Director 248-676-2121,
