The Alzheimer's Association estimates that there are 170,000 people with Alzheimer's disease living in North Carolina. By 2025, this number is expected to increase by 23.5 percent to 210,000. Seniors aged 65 and older are most at risk for developing this disease, and in Alamance County, NC, located in the central-northern part of the state, 16.8 percent, or 27,281 people, are over 65 years of age.
To accommodate seniors who require memory care, Alamance County has five memory care facilities. Four are located in Burlington and one is in Mebane. Memory care facilities are officially referred to by the state as Special Care Units (SCUs).
