Broome County, located in south-central New York about 10 miles north of the Pennsylvania border is home to more than 200,000 residents, 16.4% of whom are seniors in the vulnerable 65 and older senior population. Some of those seniors may be living with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. For seniors who need extra care, there are two memory care facilities located within Broome County, both of which are in Vestal.
In Broome County, and in the entire state of New York, memory care facilities are known as adult care facilities. These facilities are licensed by the Department of Health as either adult homes, enriched housing programs and assisted living residences depending upon the level of care offered.
- Seniors with heart conditions or respiratory issues may find that they feel better in Broome County. The county has an air quality rating of 74 out of 100 with 100 being the best air quality, 16 points higher than the national average of 58.
- Broome County has a violent crime rating of 17.5, slightly lower than the U.S. average of 22.7, and a property crime rate of 42, seven points higher than the national average of 35.4. Although the higher property crime rates are unlikely to affect seniors living in a secure memory care facility, it’s still a good idea for families to ensure that prospective facilities have alarms and security cameras in place to protect their loved ones from crime. Â
- New York does not tax Social Security benefits, and only partially taxes retirement savings account income and pensions, which might result in Broome County seniors having more money available to allocate to their memory care and facility budgets.
- The cost of living in Broome County is 83.4, considerably lower than the U.S. average of 100, which might make facility living more affordable for area seniors due to lower housing and grocery costs. Seniors can also expect to pay less for healthcare and transportation in the county.
