I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Compassionate and caring staff. Manager is on top of even small details and does a great job ‘quarterbacking’ between our family and the doctor and physical therapist and makes sure staff is all up to speed with exactly what is needed. My dad is thriving there. Thanks!!

Very happy with service here, I never knew it was right there even though I had driven by a lot. Really different from the big facilities we looked at. Lots of personal attention and everyone on staff was really caring and kind to my dad. They took time to explain things about dementia that were confusing to our family. Great place. Highly recommend.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

When we first met with the management of Bel Air Assisted Living they were very friendly and helpful. They made us feel that this would be a new home for our mom with the care she needed. At 94 years of age, she had been living independently but her dementia and memory loss required more care. After the initial deposits and move in were completed she was evaluated on a daily basis and the costs went up drastically. Within less than 30 days the monthly fee was raised $3K. They charged for items like "wandering the halls" and "not taking a daily shower". She wasn't even given a chance to adjust to her new surroundings. They would not discuss this with our family and the management was very uncooperative. We moved her out after only 3 months and our total costs for that short timeframe was over $30K. Do not trust this company they are only after your money!!

Provider Response

We do our best to explain our pricing and assessment structure throughout the admission process. Full disclosure of the care needs assessment process for a resident and the details of cost structure is provided verbally and in writing, in advance. Without further information being provided by you, we unfortunately cannot address these concerns more specifically. Nevertheless, we are disappointed to hear when expectations do not match up with our processes. We wish you and your family the best.

We placed my grandmother in this facility, believing she would be safe and well cared for by a skilled, honest and compassionate staff. We were mistaken. Realizing our error, we began the process of moving her out and into a credible continuous care facility, while following Bel Air Assisted Living's Termination of Contract protocol. During this time, our loved one failed to receive the level of care she required when the extra assistance was needed the most. Her health declined as a direct result of poor communication between management and an improperly trained/certified staff. Had it not been for our family's relentless intervention, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother would not be with us today, months after her shameful ordeal, as I write this review. DON'T be fooled by an idyllic setting. Luxury living DOES NOT necessarily equate to employing a Quality staff that gives Quality senior care. DON"T be misled into a false sense of security by inflated advertising or from management's boastful claims. RESEARCH. To find the quality measures and complaint history for a specific Maryland assisted living residence in the Maryland Guide to Long Term Care Services, I urge you to go to the Maryland Health Care Commission website before finalizing your decision. You DO NOT want to subject your senior loved one to the ill-treatment ours endured.

Provider Response

We certainly enjoyed having your grandmother with us for the 14 months during which we took care of her. Your concerns have been reviewed in detail by our supervising nurse. She has confirmed that our staff appropriately followed all orders given by your grandmother’s treating physicians. Our supervising nurse also reviewed all aspects of staff training and she has confirmed that all training is up to date and available for anyone’s review. We were particularly surprised by your statement that our staff is inadequately trained, because your family approached one of our staff members to care for your grandmother privately after she left our facility. We are restricted by HIPAA privacy laws from discussing the details of your grandmother’s care or the specifics of the disagreements your family had with the orders provided by your off site physicians. Most families choose to use the physician that comes to our facility, rather than a physician who is not able to provide on site evaluation and treatment. The physician that comes on site to our facility has a higher level of availability than physicians in the community, and working with him typically helps things to proceed more smoothly between the physician and family members. Residents and families are typically highly satisfied with the care we provide, as you can see from our numerous positive reviews. We made every effort to address your family’s expectations during the frequent meetings we had with your family during your mother’s time with us. It is unfortunate that you did not attend any of these meetings to voice your concerns, as it is not possible to make any adjustments at this point. It is highly unusual for a family to have such difficulty adjusting to the transition of their loved one to an assisted living. Prior to the pandemic, you and various members of your family were in the facility for multiple hours almost daily including participation in meals and activities. We gladly welcome all families, but this level of family-member presence in the building unfortunately could not continue during the pandemic. Most families have been able to accept the state-mandated restrictions on visiting during the pandemic, despite this being difficult for all concerned. We are disappointed that your family’s expectations were not met by our numerous accommodations to meet your family’s requests, however, we are never able to meet requests that go against doctor’s orders or state-mandates. It is unfortunate that things did not end on a more positive note. We wish the best to your grandmother and your family as your move forward down other avenues.

I visited this facility

We visited Bel Air Assisted Living, and it's a very pleasant place. The rooms are really nice and set up the way you need. It has a pleasant atmosphere for an elderly person.
