I walked through Bishop Drumm Retirement Center. It looked good. It was pretty clean. There were quite a few people around, and it seemed rather pleasant. The staff that gave the tour was great. He was really good. The dining area looked really nice. The rooms were basically like hospital rooms with just a curtain between them, so I didn't care too much for that. They said that in the mornings, they have a coffee break in a particular room. They have music outside when the weather permits, and they have a nice patio area. Inside, they would have different activities and different people would come in. While I was there, no one was there. There were two or three of them sitting visiting.

We toured Bishop Drumm Retirement Center and we looked at both the independent and the assisted living. Although, I probably spent more time looking at independent living. It's very nice and welcoming, and seemed like a very close-knit community. The staff who toured me was very nice and she was very good. The rooms were nice. They weren't amazing, but sufficient and seemed very affordable. But the primary things that I liked were the environment, like the staff environment, and the community setting. The upkeep was okay but could use a little bit of updating, as some physical updating here and there. It is sufficient, though, and not horrendous or anything like that. The food and dining areas were nice. On the independent side, they have one larger one, and then on the assisted living side, they have them kind of grouped smaller, which is nice. I don't know what the food was like, but it looked inviting. It's a Catholic community, and I saw a prayer group or a faith sharing group, which was nice. They may be a little bit lacking in the outdoor spaces, which was the one thing that I wish they had more of. They have a nice garden, but it's a little smaller.

Bishop Drumm Retirement Center was very nice, but it was very expensive. It's a buy in and I'm not ready for that. I would recommend it. It's very pretty and very clean. The rooms were very well appointed, but a little small. They had a good activities program. The staff was very friendly. Everything clicked very well. Everyone was very nice. The amenities were nice. The grounds were well kept.

My parents will move into Bishop Drumm Retirement Center. The apartment building that they're moving into is not ready yet. It was a faith-based decision. We have dealt directly with one staff member, she's apparently in-charge of bringing in people, and she was amazing. The room has got nice, big windows, very bright, it's a lot smaller than what they have been used to, but that's to be expected. They have a maintenance staff who will spruce things up, and whatever they want to do in terms of putting things on the wall, mounting a television, they can do any of that. The staff will add additional outlets if they need them, so they're very accommodating.

We visited Martina Place. We thought it was very inviting. The residents appeared very happy. Some of them were sitting in the entry way in the large living room. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. The rooms are small, but they're adequate. They have 6 dining rooms, and each one fixes their own meals. All I could smell was a wonderful apple crisp baking. We thought that the residents seemed happy. Some of the ones we visited, they did not, but these did all appear to be. They felt very cared for by the staff.

Mom is at Martina Place, and they have excellent staff. They have been very helpful with my mom. They offer healthy meals three times a day. They provide housekeeping services and medication services. Her room is very clean. With the activities, they have shopping activities. They also have movies, people who come in to play music, and people who to come in and sing. They also celebrate birthday parties.

I visited Martina Place. It's a Catholic place, so they did have religious activities for their residents. It's very new and very lovely. It also seemed very clean. The staff was very helpful too. They have this pod level system wherein they have small groups of 10 rooms around a small dining area. Each little area is separate from others. The idea is you wouldn't have these long hallways. When we were there, we didn't see anybody out. It was 1:30 in the afternoon though.

My mother-in-law recently visited, and part of that visit was going to see some independent and assisted living homes in our area. On the list was Martina Place Assisted Living in Johnston, IA. One of the first things that you notice, is that the rooms are clustered into what the nurses refer to as "neighborhoods". These clusters, serve as references for directions and for residences to identify more closely with neighbors. Dining rooms and entry ways are focused for each "neighborhood'. The amenities are in line with what you would expect, 24 hour staff, access to scheduled activities, independent living quarters and good recreation areas for TV and cards. Something I noticed, that I liked was that very few people were off by themselves, it was mainly "cliques" of people doing something that shared their interest, a group of guys were watching TV, talking about baseball, some ladies were gossiping and playing cards and another mixed group was putting together a huge puzzle. I liked that you could tell these were activities that these people wanted to do with their friends, not things the staff had set up. It was nice to see that the atmosphere was positive and relaxed.
