I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad is a resident of Calvin Community for about two years now. He started on the skilled nursing floor and got better and then moved to assisted living. It is a Christian faith-based community which is fun because we are Jewish. My dad is the only Jewish resident, and they could not be nicer. They are wonderful, loving, and supportive. It has a coffee shop on the bottom floor that is staffed by a volunteer and when you go in there and have a cookie and a piece of cake you can't even pay for it; it is free. At Christmas time, it looks like Santa Claus is about to come in; it is magical and beautiful. They have activities all the time. It is a loving and wonderful place and good. He is in a very big single room which is nice. He participates in some of the activities and some of them he does not. The place has a courtyard, flowers, and a yard, too.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband has been admitted for Rehab, after admit we here informed of a 2 week quarantine, during this quarantine he has fallen at least 3 times, they lost his cell phone so now he has lost direct communication with his support person. I have asked for the direct number to his room phone but they will not give it to me. they keep connecting me to his phone and expecting a person with dementia to give me the number. This facility is not for anyone with dementia. THEY DONT SEEM TO CARE. I am Very Frustrated as I am Given no support.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I have been a frequent visitor to Calvin for over 30 years. Although it has had ups and downs, they have a core group of employees who have been doing a great job for years and years. That kind of dedication and longevity is rare in long-term care. Don't let the rather plain setting mislead you. What matters is good care, not fancy furnishings. The Calvin staff knows their jobs and their residents.

I am a friend or relative of resident

This administration convinced my mother (at 79 years old) to put a big chunk of money in an annuity with them as the beneficiary. This annuity cannot be changed by the Power of Attorney. It will take 12 years total just to get back the principal. BAD surprise.

I visited this facility

My mother-in-law visited and wanted to visit some facilities in our area. On this list was Calvin Community. From the outside it looks like an apartment complex. It has good security at the doors, while it makes sense, it is good for your peace of mind to know security is there and visible. Once inside the look turns more towards that of a hotel. It has a good look, but is slightly more "homey" than high end hotels, which is good. The look is nice and balanced. We didn't get much of a chance to talk to staff or residents, but that is because they were in an activity and we didn't want to interrupt. The rooms were very nice and various options were available. Most of the amenities were pretty standard, but one that stuck out was a garage for vehicles for residents. My mother-in-law loved the idea of not having to sell or lose her car. The facility was very nice and had a lot of the features that my mother-in-law was looking for. While she hasn't decided, she said this is definitely high on the list.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I visited Calvin Community to see my grandfather who was staying under long term care at the facility. All of the staff were friendly - greeting visitors with a smile and remembering my grandmother's name (she was a frequent visitor), so the personalized touches were nice. As far as I could tell, the dining area doubled as a recreation area for the residents to socialize in. There was also a garden type area in the back of the facility with a walking path. All in all, there were possibilities for the residents to be entertained. The place is kept clean and organized, and all necessary facilities are there. There was an exercise room across the hall from my grandfather's room with stairs to walk on and an assisted railway path I assume was used for physical rehabilitation for residents that needed it. The place was very presentable and well put together. The only negative thing, which may not be a fault of Calvin Community, but of long term care in general, was that it is tremendously expensive to stay there. My grandmother told me how much it was, and I was quite shocked - it seems like they could hire a full-time live in nurse for their home for the price they paid to stay at Calvin Community.

I visited this facility

This is a great facility for all kinds of people. Make sure that if you are in the Des Moines, Iowa area and you have a family member or a loved on that is in need of assisted living, or long term nursing home care that you check it out. It is very clean and comfortable. The rooms are spacious and you get to put your own things in them if you want and they feel very homey. The halls and the common areas are all clean and neat and there are a lot of great things in them. The staff is kind and helpful and is always there to help you or the resident if you need anything. They don't let the residents get bored, they have a lot of daily activities and events and the residents can pick and choose what they would like to do. From people that come in and do manicures to movie nights an d more. The food is great as well. All the residents seem to like it. Make sure that you check this facility out.

I visited this facility

My father was a resident of this 'fun' and 'friendly' community, yet what I discovered completely blew away the sugar coated facade that Calvin Community claimed to be. When we first visited him, we noticed a strong odor of urine and feces as soon as we walked in. Various residents were scattered here and there, as if in a mental hospital; some calling for help, while others buried in their own misery. The C.N.A.s in charge all seemed to be on break at the same time, as during our 45 minute visit, his call light stayed on right until we left. I went to tell a Nurse that he needed help, but was quickly told that, "I'm on break." in a very snoody tone. Overall, I would never send anyone that I love there, nor would I ever go back if I had the choice. The only reason that I rated it two stars was because of a few of the newer C.N.A.s, who were friendly, and trustworthy.
