I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Do not send your loved ones here. My mother stayed here at the Spring Mill in Merrillville, IN for 3 or 4 weeks in late 2022 and could not wait to leave. My mother was very sick with cancer and could barely get any sleep because the nurses and staff at night made lots of noise laughing, talking loud, gossiping, and having the TV on loud at night at the Nursing Station. My mom kindly spoke to them about the noise and they rudely told her they can do whatever they want. She mentioned it again to the staff and they told her "It is what it is". Where is the respect of being quiet when people are sleeping, especially ill people like my mother? One of the staff members refused to help my mother up in the bathroom when she was too weak to get up. Some of the staff were nice to her but many were very rude to her. The food they serve in these places is complete unhealthy garbage. They have no common sense on what to feed a sick person which is not hamburgers, french fries. desserts, soda, etc and when my mom spoke up about it, they gave her more attitude. There was no working heat in my mom's room and it took about a week for them to finally get it fixed. One of the doctors was yelling at my mom. This is a terrible place with many rude, inconsiderate, and unprofessional staff. I regret ever sending her to this terrible place.

Spring Mill Health Campus was nice with everything they had to do. My grandmother was there two years ago and their apartments were well taken care of. The staff was nice They were great. They had bingo and card games.

Worst place on earth. Employees are LIARS. Treat residents horrible. They should not be in business. Don’t treat all equal. Personal belongings disappear.Don’t return messages. Billing is atrocious. There are so many other QUALITY Facilities in the area. Check them out

I am/was a resident of this facility

In September 2021 Methodist Southlake arranged for me to be transported to Springmill. I spoke to a member of management about 11:30 that morning and was transported via ambulance at 4:30 that afternoon. Upon arrival at the facility, the nurse at the door was very disgruntled at my arrival asking, "what is she doing here?" Even the ambulance drivers mentioned her attitude. She left us outside and returned with my room assignment. The ambulance attendants took me to room where I sat. I could not locate the call button so 3 hours later at 7:30 pm I figured out what facility I was in and used my phone to call the main number to ask if I was supposed to sleep in my clothes and would I get my meds. My nurse answered the phone and asked why I was dressed, which I thought was a strange question. Eventually she arrived to my room with an aide whom she gruffly directed to get me a gown and then left. The aide went and found a call button since one was not in the room. I asked about getting something to eat and my meds. The aide made a sandwich for me and passed the message along that they do not have a pharmacy so I would not be getting my meds that day. I am diabetic, have hypertension and a disc pinching my sciatica. I question since they knew I was arriving at 11:30 that morning why were my meds not ordered but received no direct response. Finally about 8 pm a doctor arrived who gave me less than half my pain med without my regularly prescribed muscle relaxant and left. At 10 pm another aide came to take my vitals. I spent the night pacing the room in a blanket soaked in hot water from the sink and in tears, using the call button to get help which was never responded to. When I was due to another pain med according to the doctor's instructions from the night before, I again tried the call button, but no response. It was quite possibly the worst night of my life. When the day aide came for my breakfast order, I was dressed and informed him I was leaving. He informed management, 4 of whom came to my room stating they did, in fact, have meds in a "vending machine" (I am sure it's not what we consider a machine for public use), and offered to change rooms with another nursing team, but we all know that a new nursing team could easily be friends with my originally assigned nurse and therefore be on the receiving end of paybacks, so I checked myself out without discharge. While I am 73, I do know my patient rights and I write this review to warn family members who may be considering this facility for a loved one who may not be intimately aware of what meds they take, why they take them, and how often they should be administered should seriously consider another facility. By the time I arrived home, my blood sugar was 190 (far too high) and my blood pressure was in the dangerous zone. I sensed that management was very concerned with the treatment I received and I truly hope that my nurse no longer is employed at this facility or any other facility as her heart is not with the patient. Family members, please be sure you are aware of the treatment your loved is receiving when the time comes that they require to be placed in a nursing home. Advocate for them, ask questions, be a nuisance if need be. I am a widow so until I can move to Colorado where my son lives, I am my own advocate but I recognize the time will come that my cognitive skills will diminish. Until then I am not fearful of alienating staff who are not performing their duties properly. This facility may well be a good one; management definitely was compassionate when listening to my experience; whether the situation would have changed 180 degrees had I chosen to stay, I cannot say. Regardless if I am ever in the future of being placed in a skilled nursing facility again, I personally will avoid this one. As they say, one bad apple can destroy an entire operation. This nurse definitely does not have a heart for her patients; no one should ever go through what I went through that night.

I visited this facility

I have visited The Legacy part of Spring Mill in Merrillville, it's a separate building but still part of Spring Mill. My brother-in-law will move there from the hospital he's currently in. We were only there for about 10 minutes to sign papers and stuff but it was really nice. Everybody that walked past said hello. It didn't smell, that's one of the things that are on our radar. It seemed very clean and it seemed to be very nice. The director of The Legacy, her name's Cindy, she's very very nice. She's helped us through a couple of situations. We saw activities happening while we were there but we have not seen his actual room yet because of the COVID.

My brother is in the memory care unit at Spring Mill Health Campus, and he seems to be enjoying the place. He likes the food, but with his limited memory capacity right now, we just take what he said. The staff is very friendly and nice. My brother has only been there a week, so I can't make a definite determination right now, but what I've seen I'm okay with. I can't really go in too far because of this health crisis; just one person meets me at the door. It's a fairly new place.

I visited this facility

Spring Mill Health Campus was excellent. The rooms were very clean and had up-to-date furniture. The food was very delicious. The staff explained everything very clearly and knew her business. She was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the place.

My 94 year old father was admitted for rehabilitation after suffering 5 broken ribs from a fall out walking his dog. He is a retired surgeon. Spring Mill took good care of him. They arranged follow up care for his other medical issues. The staff was attentive, and he remarked that a staff member (Pam) showed "great initiative" in anticipating and providing care for his needs.

My husband was in a respite program at Spring Mill, and he was there for 30 days. The staff members do a good job, and they had a very good schedule. However, it was not a good fit for him.

If your loved one ends up here, make sure you visit often. The quality of the staff is getting worse and worse. Another recent, disturbing incident happened, and I get absolutely no response from administration.

There has been a recent change in ownership. I no longer care much for this facility. I have noticed that the quality of new staff has declined. I wonder if they do background checks on employees. I have good reason to bring this up. I really want to move my loved one, but he's used to the facility. If it gets any worse, we won't have a choice. Good luck getting the on call doctor to call back in a timely manner. I have also had a few recent situations where I have had to deal with the administration. Very far from a positive experience. I have noticed a lot of misinformation, and a huge lack of communication.

My dad has been at Spring Mill Health Campus for approximately two months now. We're very happy with the service and I'm very pleased with everything. The community has a homey feel to it, the staff is excellent, and the food is good. I saw how they treat other people when their families are not around. They're very professional, courteous, and compassionate. They always have activities and something planned like Bingo or car shows. So far so good, I found nothing that I can complain about. They take care of my dad and even take him to the hospital.

Friend or relative of resident

I have a grandparent living here and the facility is wonderful! The staff is extremely friendly. There are a lot of great activities for residents and their families and even have dinners for certain holidays. There are even small rooms for get togethers. It is a beautiful and clean place.
