I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mother spent the last week of her life in a nursing home facility, Sonogee Estates. She was always dead-set against going into hospice so at the very end of her life my father had no choice but to send her to a facility that could care for her around the clock. Sonogee Estates was the obvious choice because it was less than a mile from his home.I visited my mother there three times before her death. My first visit was in the evening around seven o'clock. I remember walking into the facility with no idea where her room was, nor how to find her. My sister and I wandered down halls searching for someone, anyone, to lead us in the right direction. The hallways were dimly-lit because all the residents were tucked into their rooms for the night. We walked back and forth for about ten minutes before we finally spotted a nurse working at one of the nursing stations. We asked her how to find our mom's room and were relieved when she steered us to the correct wing of the facility. My mother was barely conscious for most of the week but the staff and nurses were extremely empathetic and tried to make her as comfortable as possible. They moved her roommate out of the room for her last few days so we could have privacy. Although my first impression was not great, each time I visited I noticed they treated her with dignity and respect. This was very comforting because my mother would have hated the fact that she was in a nursing home if she was conscious. The facility itself seems a bit rundown. For example, I noticed peeling wall paper behind the head of my mother's bed. The staff and nurses are very competent, though, and that is much more important than the outdated decor.

I have had problems with Parkview in the past. Generally I think they stack their bills, hire too few doctors, and don't really care about their patients. The office staff and doctors have never been anything short of rude almost EVERY time I go in to one of their facilities. However, when my dad went to The Oaks for hospice from a terminal case of pancreatic cancer, they were nothing short of SPECTACULAR. We never had a single problem with any one who had worked there and they all really got to know my dad. It was not easy watching my dad starve to death, but they were not only there to take care of him, they took care of us too. Knew us by name, called when it seemed like it was his time. They consistantly offered an open ear and reasonable solutions. Now that he's passed and we've had a little bit of time to think about it, I would highly reccommend the Oaks to someone else. The only good thing I would say about Parkview.

    Friend or relative of resident

I have a close family member who is currently a resident at this facility. From day one the staff has been exceptionally accommodating to us and everyone was very pleasant. They gave us a detailed tour of the facility and answered all of our questions regarding the type of assistance that would be available to my family member. The staff at this facility are extremely caring, compassionate, and are more than willing to assist both their residents and the residents' family members in meeting their needs. The facility is also very clean and well taken care of. The apartments are spacious and have full amenities. Their maintenance staff is very quick to correct anything that may need fixed. I highly recommend this facility to anyone who is considering assisted living.
