What we wished we had known before choosing the Symphony at Tiller's: 1. They will not allow the resident to walk because they told us they are short staffed and they are! My husband was forced to stay in bed or in a wheel chair where they parked him at the nurse's desk in front of a blank computer screen until bedtime. 2. His room was dark and smelled of urine. At times we found him lying in a wet bed. 3. Meals were delivered to his room where he was left to eat alone and if he didn't eat, they would take the tray and say, 'Oh, not eating today?' 4. On the day of his discharge, he was wearing pajama pants that didn't belong to him. 5. In his 3 week stay, his teeth were not brushed, hair was not combed and was never shaved. The OT cut his fingernails. I believe there are people who work there that really do care but residents are suffering and in my opinion, are being treated inhumanely mainly because they are understaffed. I wonder if the owners of the Symphony's would put their loved ones in this facility? We are so thankful to have found a loving, caring facility where my husband is now thriving.

My short stay at Tillers of Oswego was a nightmare. After 5 miserable days there, I requested to be discharged and entered another facility. The intercom system was being updated. Patients were given little bells to ring to get medical assistance. Of course the under staffed nurses or aides never heard the bell ringing. Patients would wait 20 minutes before being recognized. Often, medications were not administered on time.

Ever since the Saxon family sold Tillers to the Symphony corporation it has steadily gone down hill. Oh, the outsides look pretty. The did a lot of renovation. There are now TVs on the walls blaring loudly all the time. I guess some people like that. Oh yes! And a little Starbucks counter where you can order your favorite treats. But wait, your mother needs a nurse, and you can't find one? Push the call light and you may get one eventually. Or try looking out the in hallway. You might find one darting in and out of rooms trying mightily to do the work of 3 or more. Does your father need help with eating? Good luck with that too, because the staff only have so much time for each resident. If your father is lucky, he may get a half a sandwich They are highly understaffed...all,the.time. I now have smelled stale urine in my mother's room, where before the Saxons sold out, I NEVER did. My mother has had bed sores, which were not an issue before Symphony took over. Also my mother is supposed to be a "two person assist", but I was lied to by an aid telling me that had changed (when it hadn't). And yes, my family has been very diligent about letting Tillers know about any problems. But things don't change, other than the staff. There is a very high turnover rate there now. Tillers got a five start rating from Medicare while the Saxons still owned it. Symphony bought it up and is riding their coat tails. So do not be fooled by it. Putting your loved one in a nursing home is a terrible experience no matter what. Don't make the mistake of putting them here. Tillers is not what it used to be, and will never be again.

Tillers was a very nice facility. They were very helpful in our making arrangements for a small birthday gathering for my Mother-in-Law by arranging for a small private room for us. There was the security of having to check-in and check-out. The residents seemed happy, well taken care of, and clean. There were no odors anywhere. The main lobby area had a large very well kept aquarium for all to enjoy. Very comfortable seating areas for residents to enjoy company. My Mother-in-Law and Father-in-Law had no complaints as far as her care and well being were concerned, and said the food was very good. No personal objects came up missing, which I have known to be common in some nursing homes. The staff treated her well, offered various avenues of therapy treatments, and worked well with their insurance company to get her placed there. The only negitive I can think of is that it on a busy street so driving in and out of the drive is difficult.

Don't let the good Medicare ratings fool you: The Tillers is still a nursing home. And if you are simply at Medicare rehab patient, they string you along with unrealistic, optimistic prognoses to keep the Medicare gravy train moving along. You get just minimal care/attention if you are simply there as a Medicare patient. Other issues too like lack of care causing infections not tended to. They, from my personal situation with my loved one, are heartless & only care about money. Period. Beware!

From what I have seen there, staff are always present in each wing of the facility. There are people checking up on them as often as possible and they are very good about informing the family if there is some sort of incident (for example, if she falls which has happened on a few occasions). In general, I feel safe when she is there, and feel like she is being taken care of. People take her to the cafeteria and help her with her meals and take her to get her hair done once a week. The staff helps her with her television and keeps her entertained with various activities around the home (bingo, singers, movies, games). There is also medical staff there 24/7, nurses who know what to do if she gets sick or injured. Furthermore a doctor is there at least every few days, and can always be called upon if she's sick. I'm very satisfied with the way she is being taken care of and feel that she is in a very safe environment. The only reason I've given it 4 stars instead of 5 is because we've had some billing issues with the home, charging her ridiculous amounts of money for incidental items like toothpaste without telling us. Now that we know, we buy her her own so we don't have to deal with the fees. She was also in isolation once with an illness, and the room charge went up significantly on those days and we did not know until the bill arrived which was very frustrating. Occasionally her prescriptions are charged more than once as well, but other than billing problems which have so far been resolved, I feel the care there is beyond adequate.

Selecting a nursing and rehabilitation home for my mother-in-law was stressful, but once we found the Tillers home things moved forward with ease and comfort. From the process of finding her a bed to her last day, the administrative staff communicated with us weekly regarding her insurance coverage and charges. The facilities were immaculately clean and the rehabilitation area was outstanding. The nursing staff were literally the best I've ever seen. They were kind, responded quickly and always available - the Tillers had a low patient-nurse ratio (3 patients to one nurse). The physical therapists got my mother-in-law back on her feet and functioning on her own within three months. The staff even made the effort to make sure my mother-in-law had roommates with similar rehabilitation issues and close to her age. My mom was a geriatrics nurse for my entire childhood and I grew up visiting her as Director of Nursing at other facilities. I can say that the Tillers is the most remarkable home and the only one I've ever seen that really seemed to comprehensively care about the patient's well-being. They also have a really cute bird sanctuary cabinet in the dining room...

I can't imagine a better staff or facility for my father who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease. It's rated as a five-star Medicare provider for good reason.

I have visited residents at this facility and found the staff to be interested in the residents. They seemed concerned with the needs of the residents. It was clean and smelled good. In the dining room the food looked appetizing. There are areas that invite converstions.
