Heritage Woods of Gurnee seems like a nice place. I completed an application and went in to have my nursing evaluation. It wasn't until then that the nurse asked me how old I was, and at the time I was 63, and she said, 'Oh, we can't have anybody under 65.' So that was the end of that. They took me a long way into the process before they told me that. I have since learned that if a person has a physical disability, they're exempted from the 65-year age rule. I could have been living there all this time, but instead, they got me excited and said no, so I was not happy with the way they handled that. I gave them my date of birth right away, and if they couldn't figure out how old I was, then it shouldn't have been my problem, it should have been theirs. It was clean. The people there seemed happy. It was big. The person who gave you the tour was knowledgeable. The place appealed to me obviously or I wouldn't have applied. I was eligible for a one-bedroom, and that is the key factor because a lot of places will only put you in a studio if you are on Medicaid, and studios are mostly very tiny. The dining area was clean. We were there between meals, so I didn't get a chance to visit with people who already lived there or tried the food.

Heritage Woods of Gurnee is a newer building, and the rooms were a bit large. I just looked at the studio, I didn't see anything else. It wasn't quite running yet, so it wasn't that homey, but it's actually my second choice for my mother. They have a lot of activities. In the warmer weather they cook hamburgers and hotdogs once a week, and they have a fire pit where they roast marshmallows for s'mores. They had the Girl Scouts come in pre-COVID and do some baking with some of the residents. They had the Boy Scouts come in and do some raised beds too for gardening. They have a gardening area, which my mother loved. The facility is very well-maintained. They also mention that they bring in comfort animals, like dogs and cats, once in a while. The one thing that's really interesting is that it's at a busy intersection, but you cannot hear any traffic noise at all when you're in the building. It was very, very quiet. I don't know what they did, maybe they insulated the windows, but you could not hear any of the noise from the outside.

We were impressed with Heritage Woods of Gurnee. The girl who took us around was very friendly, knowledgeable, knew pretty much everything, and answered all of the questions we had. She took us to some of the activity areas. We saw people having lunch and met with one of the activity directors there, so we saw pretty much everything that they do.

I went to Heritage Woods of Gurnee, and I did not care for it too much because it was too small. The staff was very nice. There was no courtyard. It was more concrete all over.

I moved into the Heritage Woods. I don't like it, but the CNAs are very nice, and one of the nurses is very nice. The apartments are very nice. It's a 1-bedroom, the bathroom is good, and its shower is convenient to shower in. The food is fine; the dining room is OK. It's just that find it noisy. They have bingo and stuff like that which I don't care about. I feel perfectly safe here. The apartments have locks on them.

Heritage Woods of Gurnee was very clean and very nice. The rooms were adequate for anybody. They had a lot of different things going on. They had a workout room and a place for movies. The security seemed very good.

My mother is in Heritage Woods. We choose it because of its proximity and cleanliness. The staff is very good. They have activities like fitness class, bingo, outings, cooking classes and other stuff. I think they have a minister comes in every Tuesday once a month and they also have services on Sunday. I believe they have free transportation for doctor's appointment.
